Fan Observations

Most of the evening Ram Fans were conspicuous by their absence. However, they were pretty quiet until they had a 3 PT lead in OT, then the RUDENESS erupted...
Fan across aisle from us stood up, gave everyone the Finger and said F U Spiders. Then, rando young ladies danced down the steps and flaunted their RPI tshirts, yelling VCU VCU!!! They need to learn that the Robins Center is not their Siegel Costco Circus. As season ticketholders, this is why we purchased 12 extra tickets & sold or gave them to only verifiable Spider fans. Unfortunately, Rodney Ram sat near us. Suggest that he may consider a two seat purchase as a one seat just does not work for him. Anyone sporting a Dollar General Viking Ram Hat and yellow cape probably needs some professional help. Actually, in all good fun he added to the ambience of the evening (Ram songs and all). Hope he had enjoyable ride back to Ram Land in the cab...Ram Gear and all.

I thought the Ram team lost with class. Handled the end of game with class. I only wish that a portion of their fan base would learn from them. The "finger and the F bomb" isnt helping what is an already bad reputation in the A10 about a portion of their fan base. I have attended alot of VCU games thru the years but after an incident 4 years ago , I will not be returning. The problem is that their athletic administration thinks its ok. This opinion came after hearing their AD speak at a function this past year.

I went to one game at the Siegel Center years ago when UR played the traditional December B&B game, and it was a really unenjoyable experience. As with most things, a lot of the fans were fine/pleasant, but there were lots who were just turds. There was one guy who would tell me to shut up anytime I clapped for the Spids, it was just ridiculous.

I would never go to another Spider game there, it's just too over the top.

I agree that the VCU players handled the loss well. As I have maintained since we began playing them in the '70's, the players aren't the problem; the VCU fans are. And, despite attempts by the NCAA and the two schools to improve fan behavior, the guys in the yellow sweaters just don't seem to get much better.

I thought his name was Pavarotten. Did he have his white board? Did he wipe it off with his shirt again?

I went to a game at VCU last year (not against Richmond) and some dude would get all bent out of shape and tell us to sit down whenever one of us got up to leave our sit during the game or when we arrive just seconds after the second half started. He acted like we were an opera or play, not a basketball game.

Does anyone know why Jason Whitten (tight end for Cowboys) was at the game? Apparently he had some connection with one of the VCU coaches. I was sitting just behind him behind the VCU bench and family section.

He was just adding to the additional reasons to not like VCU list. Now they can count him and Spike Lee as fans.

There are clowns on both sides. Let's not pick out one or two idiots and use them to be representative of an entire fanbase. I hate VCU, but when I went to the game at Costco this year, a VCU fan came up to me before the game, shook my hand and wished us a good game.

I have not darkened the doorway of the Seagull Center since I was spat upon while my young son watched. I think it was 2009. I agree that the players have almost always been classy and gracious (going all the way back to the Lamb/Duncan/Schlegel days), it's the Lamb fans that have not been.

I thought the VCU team showed class as well. It is what it is. At least the attendance was down to an acceptable level than previous years! I also have no desire to go to the Siegel Costco Center either, once was quite enough. Tolerating VCU fans at the A10 Conference game at Barclay's was bad enough as well...

Guys every fanbase has its bad ones. At the game I got absolutely verbally abused by some kid all game with his parents as they just watch it go on. I mean some serious language right in my ear too. Even going as far as to hop up and down in front of where I was sitting during UR runs to try to irritate me. UR fans around even spoke up toward the end and apologized to me. They said I had been respectful all night and ignored it. His mother took serious offense to them telling the kid to be quiet. That's when another older UR fan told her someone needed to discipline her kid and teach them to respect adults. The UR fans around me were truly embarrassed as they told me good game before leaving.

glad he was not a UR grad, probably going to rpi where he will then be an even more obnoxious fan. just kidding, every school has jerks sitting in the stands. hope you come back and if you are in the same section have some duct tape with you.

Chico I have had very bad and neutral experiences with RPI fans at different venues. I do know a few UR fans that don't attend those games because of past experiences with their fans. To me it makes 1/31 and 2/25 all the better. :)

K, what about your experience when you were an RPI student?
Give it a rest, the same old crap is getting tired.

On the subject of RPI fans when I watched the replay I was surprised to hear of of the two talking heads say the fan makeup in the Robins Center was 70% Richmond fans and 30% RPI(alright he said VCU) fans. Welcome to other estimates but my guess from observation was in the 5 to 8% range for RPI fans and probably lower end of that. He must have been looking at the RPI bench and the few rows behind it but he was off on that observation.

UR2k. Sorry I blocked!/ignored that guy. He has a hard on for me for some reason. Just a troll.

I also heard Picozzi make that "70-30" comment and was pretty surprised. I think Fan1 is right. Roughly 90-10.

Yes, 90-10 is what I would say too. He was across from the RPI bench and saw their family members behind them. Few in section 20 and some opposite the students behind the basket.

Considering last year it was probably about 60-40 in Premium section, I'd say the 90-10 is a good estimate for this game. Maybe announcers were counting RMC staff in their yellow jackets in that 30%.

Saw Keith Gill at the reception today and expressed my appreciation for the way the AD handled tickets for this game. He was genuinly appreciative of my comments. I believe that this is the template for years to come.

It certainly should be. The VCU fans that were in attendance (and I think the 90-10 figure is pretty accurate) were sprinkled around the arena, which meant there was no concentrated area of them. That is what we want.
