FCS schools are required to sponsor at least 14 sports, while FBS schools are required to sponsor at least 16.

Of course, with another antitrust lawsuit or a blown-up NCAA that too could go away, but that's the rule for now.
Just another avenue or reason for these schools to break off from the NCAA. Why are you forcing us to sponsor so many sports when we can't financially do so? Let us sponsor what we feel is appropriate given our financial position at our University - that will be the argument put forth by some lawyer.

what's funny is the expense for all the scholarships in all of their athletics (they have 36 teams) was $23.8M.
meanwhile, "in the 2024 fiscal year, Ohio State's athletics department spent $54.3 million on coaching salaries, benefits, and bonuses."
that includes $9.2M in severance payments to fired coaches.

athletic facilies debt is a big part of their expenses at $45.3M.

The terms non-profits use is "excess revenue" - as long as they take that "excess revenue" and re-invest back into the school/university - they are fine. They just are not allowed to make a profit and hold onto it. So many times this is why some P5 programs are constantly spending on locker rooms ,uniforms, upgraded travel, etc - they have to make sure to spend all this money - IF they are lucky enough to make a profit, sorry "excess revenue".
Non profit is a tax designation status. Non-profit do not pay most federal taxes because they are doing something that is defined as charitable. Non-profits can make a profit though.

I would say, they can make a profit but can not take a profit…

imo, they don't need tax exempt status. if they're not making a profit, there's no tax anyway.

Dji season comes to end in blowout loss. Rough year for LSU too.

Dji numbers went down decent amount from OOC to SEC play. But still proved he can play there. Which is not unexpected. I hate to pick on vt4700 who is not here to defend but appropriate when discussing his nemesis. I said a good Richmond player should be a pretty good player at a p5 school like a LSU. For some reason 4700 took offense to that even tho it was complimenting our guys.

And lsu is a mid tier at best. Tough league & I think team lost starter to injury but that happens all over. We know that. Overall his stats were very very similar to Richmond senior year. And I expect he played good D again.

U can have good experience within a tough losing season - just like ours could - so I expect had a good one. And hopefully an overseas experience playing next if that’s what he wants.

And lets not forget - his bank account is a bigger than it would have been had he stayed at UR.

SEC was insane this year. Very tough league. I don’t think Dji regrets his decision haha

Crazy to think that LSU probably spent a few million dollars to put together the worst team in the SEC. Could have done that for free!
Based on the A10 commissioner’s statements, there will be plenty of schools in this situation starting as soon as next season. Doesn’t make any sense to me. How long will it take for there to be market based costs? I can’t see donors or programs continuing to throw money around without obtaining the desired results.

Agreed, I think teams have a year or two to try to change how/where they are positioned in the hieracrhy of D1 basketball. Spend your money wisely, win a bunch of games and elevate your status, and you might be able to stay in that rarified air longer and generate enough sustainable funding to do so. Fail the way we did this year for a couple years in a row, and your funding is going to dry up.

The number of programs that can regularly commit $3M a year to paying players is going to get smaller, not larger.

It will get smaller on the mid-major level but not the P5 level - those schools with the football and fanbases will always be able to replenish. And at that level - 3 million is likely not enough. Take a school like Duke or Kentucky, or now Arkansas with Cal - they are going to be paying multiple top level guys.

Correct, that's what I meant. The $3m figure was thrown out by the A10 commish as being what our league was anticipating, but I really don't see how Duquesne, LaSalle, Fordham and those programs are going to pony up that kind of money to finish ninth every year. Illogical. They'll just stop spending and probably do almost as well.

At the top level, though, you are right. It will be an arms race. But ironically I don't think it will change much there either. The big boys will spend the most and remain the big boys. Exception might be someone like BYU with a nation of supporters and the ability to elevate a bit as a result.

I've read on here UR paying $4m just to our football team. I've read on here CAA teams paying $2m to their football teams. FCS football. So $3m to A10 bball is actually believable when u consider those other things.

But yeah seems likely there will be a reckoning eventually

Tough way to end a season. As G mentioned we lost our only real big a starter in Fl St game early and 2 others out the last 5 games one of those being a starter. Dji proved very much he could play at that level. Very proud of him and we are happy and content with the decision he made to go to LSU. Two great but different experiences during his college journey. The season didn’t go as planned as far as our record, but he got better and feel as did the coaches he would have made the all-def team had our record been better, but a ton of great defenders in SEC.
“Was he a starter for all 32 games…of course he was”😉 Was he able to get to the rim in the SEC…see Texas game 🫠

We are extremely proud that he is a Spider and a Tiger. He will have an opportunity to keep playing somewhere, whether overseas or G League and that is all you can ask for your child…to be able to continue doing what they love! PS…I actually miss some of you guys 😀

It is, but lets see how they fair in the NCAA. The fact that Oklahoma who finished 6-12 in the SEC is considered a lock for the NCAA is mind blowing. Yes, they were the best league, but still feel you should have to go at least .500 in your league to make the NCAA's.

Some of us…my guess is you miss 23 of us but not 47 of us…

Agree. And I think he made the right choice. If you're going to be on a losing team, would you rather it be at UR or in a much better league like SEC, playing against better competition, playing in better arenas, and bringing home more money?

Happy for Dji. He gave us plenty & moved on.
