Danny's Spring Football

Agree that the defense looked much farther along than the offense. I did like it that the d-backs played tougher and closer coverage. I think (hope) that the big cushion we gave receivers under Trott is gone. Clyde made a couple of nice plays and the linebackers looked mobile and aggressive.

Lauretta looked about the same, threw some nice passes. The receivers dropped too many. Bevells is going to be a good one, and we already know Brian Brown is too. Hudson should be a third target, got open frequently and, for the most part, caught the ball when it was to him. Running game is somewhat questionable. Collins is fine, but not particularly impressed by the backups.

Tray's leg is strong. Helkowski punted well except for one shank. Couldn't tell much about special teams as there were no kickoffs and all punts were considered fair catches without run backs.

Agreed. I only attended the first half so for what it is worth, left with the feeling the D could be better than last year. there was some hard hits thrown on the wide receivers. Have a feeling the secondary could be much improved and coverage formations I liked much better as well, Billy Wayne It's spring, but the O has a lot of work to do. Could be an opening for XG in the back field. Receivers will be fine. Thought the O line pass protected well. Did not see a lot of holes open up for running backs while I was present.

For Bevels, Waller, happy returns in Spiders' spring game

On April 3, Jarmal Bevels tweeted, "1 year ago today." There was room for elaboration, even in a 140-character format. Those familiar with Bevels' story did not need it.

He emerged as a productive receiver for the University of Richmond as a true freshman late in 2014. During spring drills last year, on April 3, Bevels suffered a non-contact knee injury that kept him out of the 2015 season. The Spiders shared the CAA Football championship and advanced to the FCS semifinals.

"It was tough sitting out, but everything happens for a reason," said Bevels.

Bevels, a 6-foot-3 188-pounder from Fredericksburg, started in Saturday's spring game and made a pair of catches, one of them stretching and in the air. There will be more opportunities this season, when coverage schemes are tilted toward Brian Brown, a senior who made 76 receptions for 1,450 yards last year.

For Bevels, it was the left knee. For Brandon Waller, it was the right.

Waller, a 6-3 257-pound junior defensive tackle who also started Saturday, suffered a season-ending injury last Sept. 12 at Hampton while making a pass-rush move.

"The hardest thing is you're not able to help the guys win," Waller said of last season. "It was definitely difficult to watch, but they were in good hands without me. If you have to watch, it's always great when they're winning."

Bevels and Waller are two of several reasons the Spiders, who return 15 starters from a 10-4 team not including those two, could be better this season.

Before about 1,000 at Robins Stadium Saturday, the offense wasn't as sharp as the defense, which is common in spring games. A few dropped passes slowed the offense, which the defense defeated 53-33. The defense scored via punts forced, tackles for losses, pass break-ups, fourth-down stops, and other non-traditional methods.

"The defense, at times, showed that we have a chance to be really good on defense," said UR coach Danny Rocco. "I felt like the defense kind of controlled the tempo of the game. … I don't think anybody got hurt and to be quite frank with you, that was my biggest objective here today."

Junior Gordon Collins, a Stafford resident, started at tailback (5 carries for 13 yards). The Spiders graduated Jacobi Green, who rushed for 1,595 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Rocco acknowledged that the Spiders struggled to run Saturday, but also recognized that after 14 spring practices, defensive players had a pretty good idea of what running plays were coming.

Junior quarterback Kyle Lauletta (16 for 22, 193 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT), a returning starter, "made some throws. There is no doubt that he is going to be able to get some strikes down the field and we did that here today," said Rocco.

NOTES: Named captains were senior linebacker Omar Howard (Midlothian High), senior wide receiver Brian Brown (Hermitage High), senior safety David Jones, senior defensive lineman Winston Craig, senior offensive lineman Thomas Evans, and junior quarterback Kyle Lauletta.

Spring awards went to weight-room champion (junior cornerback Jarriel Jordan), most improved offense (junior tight end Garrett Hudson ) and most improved defense (sophomore defensive end Chad Wiggins).

Richmond opens at Virginia on Sept. 3.

Passing: Kyle Lauletta 16-22, 193 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT; David Broadus 1-3, 8 yards, 1 TD; Jake Clise 4-8, 64 yards, Kevin Johnson 3-6, 42 yards.

Rushing: Gordon Collins 5 attempts, 13 yards; Jake Clise 2-7; Deontez Thompson 1-5; Caleb Drake 2-8; Kyle Lauletta 1-15; Jay Palmer 3-17; Kevin Johnson 1-2.

Receiving: Porter Abell 3 catches, 52 yards; Brian Brown 4-49; Gordon Collins 5-31; Jarmal Bevels 2-35; Garrett Hudson 1-2, 1 TD; Dajon Brissett 1-12, 1 TD; Will McCombs 1-34, 1 TD; Deontez Tompson 2-18; Tyler Wilkins 1-7; Caleb Drake 2-35; Gershon Ejoni 1-11; Dashon Tibbs 1-31.

Tackling leaders: Lemond Johnson 5, Billy Caughell 5, Brendan Coniker 4, Omar Howard 4, Logan Sedergren 4.

I was also hoping to see more from the running backs today.

The defense appears to be having fun under Cosh.

Spring ball not over yet

The University of Richmond used only 14 of the 15 spring practices allowed by the NCAA before Saturday's game. Coach Danny Rocco saved one for Thursday.

"We'll come out here with no pads on and basically (coaches will) teach the student-athletes how to execute a one-hour practice on their own," said Rocco.

When the summer arrives and the Spiders get together at Robins Stadium without coaches, who are prohibited by NCAA rules from supervising team work until preseason camp, Richmond's players will have a blueprint for how to conduct a practice.

"I'm looking forward to seeing some of those senior captains and some of those leaders on our football team take ownership here this summer to have us in position when we come back here on Aug. 3," said Rocco.

The Spiders return 15 starters from a 10-4 team that shared the CAA Football championship and advanced to the FCS semifinals. UR opens at Virginia on Sept. 3.

Defense dug in from get-go

On the first play of the spring game, Jarmal Bevels ran a quick slant and inside linebacker Omar Howard met Bevels chest-to-chest as Kyle Lauletta's pass got there, preventing a completion. It was a tone-setting play on a day led by defense.

"During the whole spring, we've been a pretty physical team. We've been like that all 14 practices that we had," said Howard, a senior captain from Midlothian.

First-year defensive coordinator Chris Cosh took over a unit with eight returning starters and learned the defense Richmond ran last season, rather than introducing a new scheme.

"Last year we were disappointed in how our defense was. Even though it was a decent defense, we want to be the top in the nation," said Howard.

Lauletta a novice no more

Heading into last season, Lauletta came off a redshirt year. He was shaky early in 2015 and gradually improved as the season progressed. Now a redshirt junior, Lauletta completed 16 of 22 for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 interception) in the spring game.

"More experience, especially at the quarterback position, it's huge," he said. "I'm not seeing things for the first time, so I'm excited about that."

Receivers rotated with ease

Based on the spring game, the Spiders may have five or six receivers capable and productive. Brian Brown (Hermitage High), Bevels and Porter Abell were with the first group most often, but Tyler Wilkins (L.C. Bird High) was part of another wave that made an impact.

"Half the time I wasn't even certain who all was rotating in and out of the game," Rocco said of his receivers. "We're going to be able to throw the ball down the field and we're going to be able to have guys go up and get it."

Great time at Robins Stadium yesterday. I thought the team looked good overall. It is amazing how much more athletic this team is than the one DR inherited 5 years ago. He has raised the level of player in the Program significantly. I thought the defense looked fast and the coverage was improved. On offense, obviously I think KL will have a tremendous year and has a lot of playmakers to distribute the ball to. I agree that the key will be the running game. Can we run it enough to keep teams honest up front is the question. I don't think we have to be a great running team, but this offense will be amazing if we get some balance and can throw off play action. I can't wait for the season to start.

Spideroldie, I think we met yesterday but never exchanged names. We were near midfield at the very top. I was wearing a red National Championship shirt. Just want to say I enjoyed our discussion as the game went along.
By the way, don't know if you had any conversation with the folks to your right but we were surrounded by our incoming freshman players and their parents.

Does anyone know how many scholarships are accounted for at this point? Do we have room for a transfer or two this spring/summer?

I enjoyed the db coverage also -- as a side note I think it will help our passing game to have to practice against that D every day.

Agree. Our offense has worked out this spring against one of the best defenses it will see all fall. All will be just fine there.

64, it was great meeting you at the Spring game! Maybe I will see you again at the basketball signing party, hopefully with some good news about one or two more signees.

The football team appears to be in very good hands, and working out the running game appears to be the one area of greatest need. As I recall, neither of us was "wowed" by the three guys who got the majority of the carries, but the guys have a few months to develop more strength in the weight room. Following in the footsteps of J Green will not be easy, but working on strength is a great next step.

FYI, the announcers mentioned that the incoming freshmen (and their families) were there, and asked them to stand. Most of the people around us at the game then stood! I was impressed by the "professionalism" and good manners of the incoming freshmen. The coaching staff appears to do a great job of recruiting for character as well as football skills!

Danny mentioned at the half time break that there were 20 players and their families attending which would be close to the already 15 signees(excluding transfers Clise and Segers) and 6 walk-ons.

Defense looked better than I expected and they were physical. The offense; running game still needs some work and too many dropped passes. Overall the team seems further ahead than they have in past years. Great afternoon

I was hoping to see Broadus at tight end more, the LSU transfer looked good.

I had hoped to see more of Broadus as well...

2016 season hasn't been played yet. Left one might be for 2014 playoffs?
