Congrats Gilyard on 276 Steals and ranking 1st in country

Gilly's 5 steals bring his YTD total to 81. With 6 regular season games, A10 Tournament and hopefully a NCAA appearance he is going to destroy the Spider season steal record of 89. He has a good chance at breaking 100 for the season which will put him on track to finish in the top 5 all time in NCAA history. If he get's a 100 this year he will be at 276. He needs to reach 365 to be top 5 and 385 to break the all time record.

If only we could help him out in some way.
Like maybe having extra games to play...;)

284 then 312 seems to be the next two national milestones...as the total number who have reached those marks seems to few and far between.

Not for nothing, but we have a couple folks on here that really struggle with homophones... makes me think they are VCU plants.

Dislike.
I can assure you 80sfan is not from VCU. Nor is he a plant.

Last year I made a "Man of Steel" joke in response to a similar post, which was more a play on words (Gilyard = Superman, haha, get it?), and didn't feel great about it. But I never questioned the man's loyalty to the Spiders.

Oh I know he's not. Just making a joke...

With 6 steals yesterday Gilly is up to 99 this year and 276 total. If he can get at least 5 more steals and gets the same amount the following year he will break the all-time record. He would only need 85 next year to finish in top 4.

Player Team Career end Steals
John Linehan Providence 2002 385
Eric Murdock Providence (2) 1991 376
Brianté Weber VCU 2015 374
Pepe Sánchez Temple 2000 365
Cookie Belcher Nebraska 2001 353
Kevin Braswell Georgetown 2002 349
Bonzi Wells Ball State 1998 347
Obie Trotter Alabama A&M 2006 346
Gerald Walker San Francisco 1996 344
Johnny Rhodes Maryland 1996 344

Bill Russell probably played good man defense but was probably best known for blocking shots as his singularly greatest aspect. Well I'm changing mind on maybe Jacob not getting the national award for just steals alone, he deserves it!

78 more to get to #5?
Would number 2 through 5 be from the A-10?

If he stays healthy, I think he breaks the career record of 385. What a great player. We were down 11-4 early and they had the ball, and his steal and the resulting easy lay up seemed to wake us up and get us going. Who knows? Without that steal, maybe they hit a three and all of a sudden it's 14-4.

I think he's going to break it. He is my favorite player and I will pray for him to avoid injury next season. How huge would that be? Do any Richmond athletes hold NCAA records?

I can't help but feel bad for Juvaris Hayes, though. The kid is going to hold the "all-division" steals record and that one I don't think Gilyard can catch. But Merrimack's move to Division I means he probably won't hold the record in either Division.

On top of that, Merrimack is ineligible for the post-season this year, so he won't get to go dancing his senior year. Merrimack won the NEC regular season title. They'd been to the DII tournament the past three years. (I believe they have set some records for a first-year DI team - most wins?)

Plus their coach's name is Joe Gallo. How could you not want Joe Gallo in March Madness?
Let the yutes play.
