This could easily be subtitled: “when words escape you.”

How many times has he done worse than expected, 15? Or did he match expectations any of those times?
It begs the (age old) question of what are the expectations for the program and him at UR? Certainly this is not one of them, i.e., only beat pre-season finish expectations 25% of the time.Yeah, he hit right on the number a fair bit. 6 times. A couple of those were 10th & 12th place finishes so not like there's much room to be worse. But overall 9 times done worse than expected. Twice as likely to be worse than expected & just 25% probablility to actually exceed.
I love that clip. it must be so emotional to end your career when you clearly have a family bond with your team. all the blood, sweat and tears ... the sacrifices. end of an era. I get choked up just listening to him.
Well, surprise I suspect, because it would be a landmark moment.I couldn’t imagine how this forum would react if Mooney gave a post-game interview response like this.

I shared it because its a complete 180 of the type of interviews Mooney does lol. But I agree that this kind of response from English was too much. There's being honest and transparent, and then almost embarrassing the team. Players see these kinds of things and could have an impact in how they perceive the coach. I am at the belief that you publicly praise and privately reprimand. Nothing good comes from airing out your dirty laundry for everyone. But I get your point, you're not asking Mooney to do that. A coach can show self-accountability in a professional manner that doesn't involve putting the team down.Bit of a straw man. I don’t hear anyone advocating for that. Many have said personal accountability and being more upset/prideful about VCU in particular. Reasonable. Nobody is saying put 9-27 on players. That’s just Moon. Nobody else been here 20 years.
Also if English used another word instead of pitiful embarrassing or just eliminated those 2 words altogether it was just fine. Go with “Played true to season.” Then he said it’s on him.
I'm all in favor of plain old honesty. Again, it is on the coach to fix whatever problems that led to the embarrassing season but the first step to me is always being honest with yourself, your team, and your fanbase.I couldn’t imagine how this forum would react if Mooney gave a post-game interview response like this.
