Coaching incompetence

How many times has he done worse than expected, 15? Or did he match expectations any of those times?

Yeah, he hit right on the number a fair bit. 6 times. A couple of those were 10th & 12th place finishes so not like there's much room to be worse. But overall 9 times done worse than expected. Twice as likely to be worse than expected & just 25% probablility to actually exceed.

It begs the (age old) question of what are the expectations for the program and him at UR? Certainly this is not one of them, i.e., only beat pre-season finish expectations 25% of the time.

At one point I thought there was something about competing for championships or something like that, I'd have to check the archives. If that's the measure, CM has actually hit on that twice in the last 4-5 years. It's a pretty amorphous goal definition.

ok, just went through the 31 game logs. there were 2 games where our 3 bigs exceeded the total game minutes.
by 5 minutes in an overtime game against Rhode Island.
the next game, Walz and Beagle combined for 49 minutes. Soulis didn't play.
we lost both games. end of experiment.

I couldn’t imagine how this forum would react if Mooney gave a post-game interview response like this.

Bit of a straw man. I don’t hear anyone advocating for that. Many have said personal accountability and being more upset/prideful about VCU in particular. Reasonable. Nobody is saying put 9-27 on players. That’s just Moon. Nobody else been here 20 years.

Also if English used another word instead of pitiful embarrassing or just eliminated those 2 words altogether it was just fine. Go with “Played true to season.” Then he said it’s on him.

I shared it because its a complete 180 of the type of interviews Mooney does lol. But I agree that this kind of response from English was too much. There's being honest and transparent, and then almost embarrassing the team. Players see these kinds of things and could have an impact in how they perceive the coach. I am at the belief that you publicly praise and privately reprimand. Nothing good comes from airing out your dirty laundry for everyone. But I get your point, you're not asking Mooney to do that. A coach can show self-accountability in a professional manner that doesn't involve putting the team down.

In post game presser, Mooney made reference to hoping those who follow Spider basketball,
noticed their improvement without winning. He also acknowledged the fan’s disappointment in
the season and he felt it. I hope he felt that change is needed.

It touched me to see how much Walz was hurting

Hey Chris, here's the way we notice whether a team is getting better: By how many games it wins. You won eight of them. You went 4-14 this calendar year. You did not improve, you actually got worse. Try again.

I'll also add this: Who cares if we did get better? It's not like we were building toward anything with this group for next year. DLo is gone. Dusan is gone. B. Artis is gone. At best, we return Tyne, Walz, Tanner, Beagle and AP as potential starters -- all of whom woefully underachieved this year and were a big reason why we sucked.

I'm all in favor of plain old honesty. Again, it is on the coach to fix whatever problems that led to the embarrassing season but the first step to me is always being honest with yourself, your team, and your fanbase.

On the other hand, we got Mooney saying how we improved throughout the year at his end of game presser. Which is not the truth. So, again I know he "represents" the University well at least that is what his supporters say, but I like my leaders to at least lead with the truth, something I think he struggles with.

Personally, I think he has a difficult time being honest with himself over the state of the program that he leads.
