Based on this clip from JOC after the game, Mooney's claim is that on two separate occasions, the officials did not let him sub in Dusan after the officials called a time out, something that he claims he had never heard of before and didn't know was a rule. So that means one of the following:
• This is the rule, and no one on our coaching staff, including our 20-year $1.3M-annual-salaried head coach, knew about it.
• This is not the rule, and no one on our coaching staff was able to produce the actual rule or ask the officials to look it up.
• This is not the rule, and Mooney did not raise absolute ungodly hell during and after the officials' failure to let Dusan back into the game, or during the press conference after the game.
• This is or is not the rule, but after the first time it happened, no one on our coaching staff learned a thing, and all of them were equally surprised when it then happened again 10 minutes later.
• Regardless of whether it is or isn't a rule, Mooney assumed that even though we had no timeouts left in overtime, he would somehow be able to sub Dusan back into the game.

I’ve asked this b4 but what is so hard to understand is why don’t we have increased expectations for a 20 year coach. Isn’t that 1 of the points. Like why don’t we have an advantage on game situations & rules. Or why at 20 years r we looking at 2 of 3 losing seasons. Or still not having a less than embarrassing win rate vs vcu. Etc etc.

Because coaches never get evaluated on how their players play.
No one is excusing the horrid play of the players. But what you are insinuating is that the coach isn’t responsible for the total product.
The coach is responsible for getting the right players, getting them to execute his strategy, and getting the most out of them. He is at a bare minimum on point to make sure his best players are on the floor when he needs them.
We are 328th in the ncaa in 3pt shooting pctg. That’s not a “ they had a bad game” problem, that’s a 17 game and counting problem. CM owns that.
And Mooney's constant "answer" is "We need to shoot better." Well no shit, Sherlock. But get a clue: We suck at shooting. We aren't going to shoot better. So maybe stop shooting 30 threes a game, because we're only going to make about six of them, and since you coach your teams to run away from offensive rebounds, we're just handing the other team free possession after free possession.
Literally try ANYTHING else. Run-and-gun. Forty minutes of hell. Four corners offense. Three centers and two forwards. LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE.

It's funny, when he subbed him out in the first place... I didn't understand it. The focus on this 'rule' is mere deflection... and I'm furious about it.
What happens if they miss? What happens if they make and URI doesn't call a time out? We have no time outs left. Is it f'in hockey? Can he jump over the boards?

A new coach would recruit and sign better players, or coach the players we have better, or hold the players we have accountable when they fail to perform, or try a new scheme when the one we've been trying stops working, or light a fire under the players so they don't regularly sleepwalk through an entire OOC schedule, or have better plans for the final five minutes or a game, or teach his players to be aggressive, or teach his players not to run away from offensive rebounds.
I agree with you Annap! A new coach would make them shoot better because that’s what is part of Coaching: teaching/coaching/helping/assisting your players to be better. The ability to shoot competently is a part of the expectation of the job.
I get that things don't always work out like you hope or expect. But this stat also is a classic example of Mooney disconnect, or failure to put guys in position. Mooney has been telling us what a great shooting team this is. Yet we are actually one of the worst. Instead of putting the ball in Walz hand 30 feet out with back to basket. Maybe just maybe put in some tweaks and sets to get these all time shooter some better looks. And this is the kind of stuff that needs to be implemented in the summer. You see these deep dives into what Hurley is doing at uconn and ac Murray is finding new stuff to counter the defense. We keep running the offensd.

You are absolutely right Nappy, this is the best that we could possibly expect at Poor Little Ol’ Richmond. That random NCAA tournament that we luck into sometime in the next 12 years is gonna be glorious!
I love how the reporter just says “Uhhh” after that horrendous explanation basically saying, “really??? Thats all you got.”
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Who recruited these great 3 point shooters and who is coaching them? Getting good looks consistently has something to do with that also Anna, or do you think tossing a desperation 3 between two defenders with 1 second on the clock is a high % shot.

Last night was a shining example of the lack of accountability in the program that is discussed here a lot. Coach could have said, I f’ed up, I’ve got to make sure Dusan is in the game and gets a touch at the end, but instead he’s blaming the refs for not letting him make a sub when you aren’t allowed to sub? Twice?
The end of regulation possession looked like the last regulation possession of the OT A10 tournament game in 2017 against VCU - sub SDJ for Tynne and Nescovic for TJ. The “play” is for a sub 6 foot guard to iso and drive to the basket and don’t ever let your best offensive player in the game touch the ball?! Great strategy

When you first addressed by initial post I thought you were posting tongue and cheek. But then I kind of changed to you actually believe what you posted. I could have responded to you with pages on this topic, as Mooney's shortcoming go way beyond his players missing 3 point shots. However, all the responses to you by our fellow posters included my ideas as well as others. These posters are sharp, astute, and observant.
I stand by what I said. "It ends when we have a new coach."
I guess my bigger question is this - Given what we've seen in 20 years of CM (track record, philosophy, strategies), do you think he is the guy to take us to the next level in the next 20 years? I'll go first. What you've seen in 20 will be what you'd see in the next 20. Not good enough. I don't even think he's the guy to take us forward into the next five years. It's way beyond time & overdue to move on with a new coaching staff completely external to UR. We need a fresh approach & new start.
There is a first time for everything! You guys need to settle down and listen to the acolytes. They have told you time and time again how good this coach is, AND that the program is on solid ground. They can't be wrong because they keep repeating it

One thing that you can look forward to: every once in a while the team will have an outstanding point guard who can get you to the NCAA tournament despite the efforts of the coaching staff.

How many of those were bad looks at the basket when the shot clock is at 2 or 1? Way too many times we’re working the shot clock down to nothing and launching bad shots. It’s more deep than just looking at the numbers and blaming the players. It’s a system problem.
Missed the last few games until yesterday. What I find ironic and funny is the coach that usually holds onto timeouts like gold didn't have any left for OT. Just the one allotted. Okay fine Mooney strategically used them all but still. BB mentioned unfortunate Roumo didn't know arrow favored Spiders when calling timeout in OT. Though no blame on him from me.

Completely agree and especially bold 8L! Forget the analytics coaches use today, IMO too much but basic old school stats says stop it.
From kenpom for entire season shooting 28.8% with 3PTA. With 48.3% shots being 3PTA. So far small sample of four games in league play shooting 29.7% with 3PTA. With 49.6% shots being 3PTA.
Of course 3PT will get above 30%, but in perspective Mooney's first year was only year lower than 30%. Additionally couple seasons ago 44% of shots were 3PTA, closest to this season but did make 33% of them.
So what I can only assume, opposing team's are simply coached to let Spiders bomb away from deep. Not only won't make many but don't have to be concerned ourselves with defending many opportunities for second chance points.
Just a few seasons or whenever team defense was bad, I mentioned at least adjust and try zoning. Yes, 8L, indeed please try LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE from an offensive standpoint.
Let's all just enjoy some foots today! The Commanders fans down there and the Eagle fan I am and also believe @97spiderfan and @PhillySpider are.

I think yesterday pushed me over the edge as far as the program goes. I think I'm done being an active fan - watching games live, planning my schedule to attend nearby games in advance, posting on this board about the minutiae of the program. If I have nothing else at all (and I mean nothing) going on that day/evening, I'll consider watching a game or part of one, but that's it.
It all now boils down to the same point and I've said my piece enough times, but it's obvious that the school, AD, boosters do not care about being a big time winning program. They are okay with a culture of comfort.
So to continue to actively support the program is just a waste of my time. Nothing will change in the program, so I have to change my habits. From what I understand, they'll just find a new fan to replace me though. Be on the lookout for Brookline Brownstone, that guy's a newbie and will likely love Moon.
