Clemson Game

Fortunately for Mooney this is a game on the road. Those apparently don’t count against him.

Beaten by a bigger, stronger team that played like the old Detroit Pistons of Bill Laimbeer et al.
Our finesse didn’t have a chance.Burton proved he’d be a top ACC player.

Noyes, I called for more of him early in the season. He needs time on the floor! He has shown us why in his last 2 appearances. Yes, he needs some polish (experience), but he isn't going to get that sitting on the bench.

How about setting a screen for him? I know we play an offense that requires 4 or 5 players that handle and shoot, but we don't have that! So adjust and run some sets that are designed to get Roche a shot.
That’s too complicated in the Mooney system!!

You start by having any type of post game success. Opens up entire floor, including for Roche. There are plenty of players that can’t create for themselves, have quick releases and have great success.
Fair…but I think good defensive teams are going to take those things away. I mean Roche is the best shooter on the team and every team is going to have him scouted. Clemson has shot it well this yr but haven’t been great defensively but they were tonight.

Quinn and Grace were completely outclassed to start the game and continued throughout most of the night. Nelson played terribly. Easy to sit on Roche at this point when not one other player besides Burton proved to be a threat.

Right, Roche is obviously not a player that is going to be super creative off the dribble, but has proven he knows how to find his spots, and has a super quick release. But he does need other guys to be a threat to create some space.

Honest assessment, ass whipping. Spiders looked like crap on offense and defense. Nelson was particularly bad in this one, as was Grace and Goose. Quinn and Bigelow marginally better. You can't play like Farleigh Dickinson and be respectable.
Well said

So how do we do it? Honestly, bc he couldn’t really get open tonight and he’s not a creator.
I know this is anathema to those who think our offense is great, but maybe run some actual plays and sets specifically designed for him or Marcus or Tyler instead of running the motion. Especially against better defenses and physical teams who disrupt the timing of Moon's motion (I've watched VCU do this for 18 years.)

I'll repeat a longtime issue I've had with the offense - that it often finds a man open on the outside who is not the guy we want to shoot the ball (ie a non-shooter). Somehow we can't run the same sets and get shooters the ball in our normal motion offense? I've often said that UR's PGs get lots of shots bc the offense doesn't generate looks consistently against good defenses and it's left to the PG to be the bailout man after a reset back up top late in the shot clock. When you have great PG play, fine, but if you don't, it's a huge liability.

There are tons of offensive systems where shooters get shots via designed action, even if they don't create the look.

The ultimate answer to this question is the $1.2 million dollar mystery. It's quite literally Moon's job to answer it.

Great post. Yes, kind of like the match up zone that worked great and the moonnation and moon hung onto for so long, just slow to adapt or have a plan B. Was hoping he turned a corner, but not seeing it yet. Also, as someone noted, sounds like he could not pull the trigger on a TO at the start of the game. Is it as simple as Hardt just having another talk with him, like he did on the defense. Maybe Boyden?
