At current pace, Kyle is a frontrunner for the Walter Payton Award. That will be pretty cool for him to be in that discussuon.

Agree with this. Gabrud hasn't been as impressive and Briscoe was proven to be the fraud he is. Schor is still getting used to his replacements.

Maybe off topic and if you guys don't want actual football discussion from a Duke that's fine, but what would you say is the biggest weakness for you guys this season? Defense?

Ya it's absolutely our defense and in particular tackling and pass defense. Neither has really seemed to get much better which is scary. Our running game has been pretty disappointing too. Defense really worries me with playing y'all in a few weeks. Even let Albany put up 38 on us and they aren't that great of an offensive team. Could easily see y'all putting up 70 or even 80 on us. I know y'all will if y'all get the chance to run up the score.

I don't mind the question. We cannot run the ball on offense and we are inconsistent on defense. We showed some flashes on D against Albany. I am very concerned about JMU's speed against our defense. As you saw when we played Sammy, they carved us up pretty well.

I know when Houston came on board we struggled with D right away too - showing signs against Albany is promising - our D really turned it around at the end of last season (ironically against VU) and now is our strength. JMU is kind of the opposite of last year - strong D and Weaker O. I could see you all doing the same (strong O weak D beginning this season, next season Strong D Weaker O after the inevitable dropoff after Lauletta).

I think our offense will still be very good next year. We return all our recievers and backs, just lose Lauletta. Kevin Johnson will be very good as a starter for us. He provides something that Lauletta doesn't and that is a threat as a runner, that should help our running game tremendously. Also our offensive Line should be better next year as well. I think we have the potential to be an even better team next year.

"Just lose Lauletta". Hmmm?

Helpful win by Stony Brook over UNH since we don't get UNH.

VU And WM offenses were completely dysfunctional today. Look at the JMU/VU box score. Good grief.

It's kind of amazing that Nova possessed the ball for over 33 minutes with only 174 yards of offense and 3 turnovers. It was also a one possession game in the 4th quarter. Right now, JMUs offense is definitely not as prolific as it was last year.

(STATS) - Elon has lost Malcolm Summers, the second-leading rusher in the FCS, to a season-ending torn hamstring.

The junior was injured late in the No. 16 Phoenix's win over William & Mary on Oct. 7. They were on a bye this past weekend.

Summers carried the ball 134 times for 755 yards this season, a 125.8-yard average that ranks second in the FCS only to another CAA Football running back, Maine's Josh Mack. He also scored five touchdowns.

Summers is expected to have surgery this week. Elon (5-1) visits Rhode Island on Saturday.

I guess the 40 carries against us took it's toll.

In last 3 games he averaged 34 carries and 210 yards. Overworked? Sounds like it, retrospectively. If they lose out or close to it, it will look like a bad loss for Spidrrs.

At 5-1 overall here’s remaining games:See them going 2-3 best case w or w/o Summers.

Looks like Delaware got beat by a little Richmond hangover. I get some real satisfaction out of that. Misery loves company.

Oh, VT if you're still out there, how do you explain your all world coach Rocco losing to Towson? Huesman didn't, and you know how challenged he is with that drawl and all.
You can jump on VT and Rocco all you want but Huesman cannot be defended

From what?
Poor performance. But only for This year. Come on we thought we had a great to good team, the out side world thought we were a great to good team ( preseason picks etc). And we are looking at a strong possibility of a losing season.

I'm as disappointed as the next guy but a lot of what has happened can't be laid at Heusman's feet. Huesman didn't fumble the first punt Saturday and gift a touchdown to SB, Huesman didn't trip over his own feet on consecutive plays requiring one yard on a potential game winning/ tieing drive against Elon, Huesman didn't take a 20 yard sack on 3rd and goal from the 5 in OT against Delaware, sometimes crap happens. 3 plays with different outcomes and everybody is happier. Sometimes players gotta make plays. Every coach in America will tell you good players make coaches look good. Coaches get too much credit when things go well and too much blame when they don't. Give Huesman time, things like this have a way of evening out.

Again, not sure what led you to believe we were going to be that good. Any team where the 2 biggest question marks are the O-line & D-line are not in a great spot. I didn't think we'd be 4-4 right now but also wasn't expecting 8-0/7-1.

Somebody thought UR would be good. Took 4 losses to knock them out of the top 20.

I'll tell you why I thought that we had a good team. We had what maybe 18 returning starters from a team that's gone deep in the playoffs three years in a row; a 5th year quarterback who is the best passer in the nation; so many solid running backs we have to play all of them; and a returning consensus All-American kicker. If you weren't optimistic before the season started you were definitely in the minority.

Huesman is a very good coach. My concern is that he took a well oiled machine and tried to reinvent it when it didn't need reinventing; what was needed was some continuity.

Exactly my feelings, Rick, well stated. Thank you.

18 starters back? Craig, Howard, Jones, Evans, Vergos, Brown, Hodge, Gregory, Mack... we are talking about 5 guys there that were in NFL camps.

Ok I didn't bother to count (but was including the two kickers). I'm sure that you counted Mo because you aren't as lazy as I am.

But you got my point, the cupboard was far from bare. My emphasis was meant to be on my last line, I should have bolded underlined and CAPITALIZED it. Sometimes you are so busy picking apart details in somebody's post that you miss the intent.

somewhat in D of Rick, JOC reports this am that we returned 16 starters. Sometimes its how you count.

Agree with your last sentence, though a HC does need to make a team his own. He's not just maintaining someone else's "machine." If he wants to do that, he needs to retain most of the existing staff.

Beating a MEAC team at home in the play-in round - essentially a "bye" - doesn't constitute a deep playoff run. I know we disagree on this, but '15 is the only deep run we had. Last year's team should have been expected to make the final 8, and be competitive in the quarterfinals, with or without Lauletta.

Outside people in the conference had us rated highly, they would know as well as anybody. I don't know any one on this board predicting a 500 or worse season. Huesman has had some bumps in his first season, it happens. For me, how we improve next couple of years will tell the tale on CH
