The CAA may be alot better this year. UHH up on Ga Southern. UD acquitting itself respectably in Blacksburg. Villanova in a fight at Temple. Elon win over Furman.

We need to get better and fast.

Elon true freshman QB Davis Cheek had 3 TD's and 301 in his 2nd collegiate start. Not that Furman has a great team, but I watched the last 8 mins or so of this game and Elon's new coach seems to be an upgrade over Scrotchky (sp?). Their team looked much sharper today than the last couple of years.

The Hens moved the ball at times. Shanked a short FG and threw an end zone pick. They looked very sturdy against the 18th ranked team in the country.

If we were playing Delaware next week, I would not like out chances based on what I saw today.

I would agree. We've got time to work out the kinks. Didn't think the transition to New staff would be this difficult. We very easily could have beaten SHSU and beaten Colgate handily if not for so many mistakes. They better get ready for Howard because they are the real deal and will be sky high for London.

With 8 trips in the red zone (in only 2 games) that resulted in zero points, I am concerned no matter who we are playing. We should be 2-0 and averaging 40+ per game.
They beat Vegas by 12.

So beating the spread = respectability? I guess if Howard had lost 44-0 to UNLV, that would have been respectable too

Not the staff, the offensive line.

0-5 on 4th down plays....The blocking was not good. players gotta play....this message board thinks that it is always on the coaches......
Last I checked, it's the coaches job to put us in the best possible position to win the game. Granted, the coaches can only do so much and can't play for the players but 1050 yards and 50 first downs of offense tells me the OL is doing something right. Do I think we should be able to convert a 4th and 1 via the run for a first down? Absolutely. After not being able to do so on the previous 3 or 4, do you think I might consider something different? Absolutely. Why run to Colgate's strength when they were giving us the short pass all day? Until Lauletta is calling his own plays a great deal of what happens falls squarely on the coaches.

1....you're one of the normal ones. The first series, it was 4th and 1...How much coaching do you need if you're a lineman on a play like that???

In this day and time I don't know whether to take being called "normal" as an insult or a complement. Both lines do some things well, and are weak at some things. Our line needs to find a way to get some running lanes for our backs. And 4th and 1 is usually strength against strength. We haven't won that much this year.

It appeared that the team could execute simple quick pass plays, but not much else. Is the lack of run game because of the o line or the coaches?

In post game interviews, Richmond's receivers said that Colgate was determined to take the deep ball away and the short to medium routes were open all game. We haven't run the ball well all year. I think the blocking schemes are way different in the spread versus the pro sets under Rocco. No fullback blocking for one. It looks like we're missing assignments in the new offense. Guess that's on the players. Some of the play calling has been interesting imho.

Tbh, we haven't been a team that has run the ball well in short yardage for much of the last 10 years. We have some versatile backs but we lack a big back. There isn't a Vaughan or Gaskins in this group. Our offensive line isn't a particularly big one either.

I underestimated how much the loss of Vergos and Evans meant. Those guys were anchors of our line for 3 years. This new group will figure it out soon.

I maybe wrong, but I think we need to provide more encouragement not condemnation in our team. How many games have we played, 2 or 6...If 2 games then we have reason for optimism but if 6 games then there is reason for grave concerns. I choose to the side of optimism!!!

Good point about Vergos and Evans. However, the season is still young and we have played two top 25 opponents on the road. We sit at 1-1. We need to work through some issues, but we are not in bad shape. We need to improve and find a way to run the ball, but hopefully the O line will improve as they get more and more experience.

I agree with the foregoing while I also greatly respect the criticism of other who have posted in this thread.

I choose to be on the side of realism...which seems to me at this point to warrant optimism. We have new coaches, a new offense, and a new defense. It will take time to adjust and gain confidence in the new bosses and their schemes.

We have talent. It will come. Given nothing unforeseeable, we will improve in every successive game with our greatest crescendo and fortissimo coming in the playoffs.
Mark it down. The season is young.

Ya we will be fine. Us and jmu are by far the two most talented teams in the league. Talent can fix a lot of things.

A few updated thoughts as the week 3 results come in...

Elon may be better under this new staff. We shouldn't take next week for granted.

Rhody beating Harvard is pretty remarkable.

UNH getting drubbed by Holy Cross is also remarkable.

Great win for Elon to beat Charleston Southern who was ranked this week. Also good win for URI against Harvard. Only bad loss for CAA so far was UNH losing to Holy Cross. All in all, CAA looks like it's going to be a tougher league this year than in the last few years

Holy Cross should be 3-0 not 2-1.Outplayed UConn at East Hartford in 1st game of year and literally folded in last 8 minutes of 4th to lose by 7.HC QB threw for 360yds v UConn.HC looks to be the best among Patriot League teams.UNH was lucky to beat Maine by 1 in its first game after a missed PAT by Black Bears.Wildcat QB is suspect.

Every CAA team except URI is receiving votes in either the STATS or Coaches poll (or both), and even Rhody took an FBS program to 3OT and just beat Harvard.

Pretty impressive, especially seeing that most of the conference team loses are to FBS teams. You know maybe we should consider the Patriot League, the CAA is going to be tough.

The CAA takes a beating when we get in to league play, so many good teams, close games, but someone will always walk off with a loss. That's why CAA teams creep down the polls late in the season, most everybody has 3 or 4 losses. The biggest proof of the CAA's parity is the fact that in the last 20 years, five different CAA schools have won the National Championship, with a sixth school (Towson) making it to the Champoinship game.

I'm not disputing how well the conference has performed this year but Towson receiving any votes is a joke with the two teams they have beat. And William and Mary is the 60th team receiving a vote in the Stats poll. How do 60 teams receive votes?? The bottom half of the receiving votes category is represented by poor football teams.

I don't know how the voters vote in FCS period, how many FCS games can they actually see?

Tbh, the second half of the Top 25 isn't very good either. I vote in the AGS poll and really struggle to justify why teams from about 17 or 18 to 25 deserve a ranking.
