CAA Football adds Bryant

But, but, but, they reached a peak of a #21 ranking...a decade ago.

They're definitely a geographic outlier in the new Big South-OVC combo necessitated by previous defections (including the CAA raiding the Big South multiple times), but apparently we're in the business of just handing out lifelines.

Commish Joey D is a life long Rhode Islander(has a CAA office there full time)and obviously has had a close kinship to Bryant admin for years especially as they beefed up this private school with a heftier endowment along with better heeled benefactors.

Ronald Machtley was named president of Bryant in 1996 and shepherded it through its transition to university status in 2004. His salary as of 2017 was reported as $719,243,not including an additional $120,726 reported under other compensation from the organization and related organizations. While at Bryant, he has led several major building campaigns. Popular with faculty and students alike, he can be frequently seen at events on campus.

In February 2019 Ron and Katie Machtley made a gift of 1 million dollars to push the Expanding the World of Opportunity campaign over the 100 million dollar mark.

Shortly thereafter, the Providence Business News reported that Machtley was paid $6.2M in 2017 as part of a retention package. It is believed this is one of the largest such payouts in the history of American higher education.

Time to leave the conference. Either start back up the A10, go with WM to socon, or pay the 5m to go fbs since they scrapped the attendance requirement. Not at all regretting not signing up for season tickets.

the CAA's expansion is just getting crazy...agree SOCON would seem to be a better fit now football wise, but would never expect our AD to be a leader in trying to bring some sanity and help steer the direction of our program until others put our backs against the wall...

the southern half of the CAA would make a pretty decent football conference...Nova, the Chickens, Towson, UR, W&M, Hampton, Elon, Campbell and A&T...but once again it would take activist leadership to get all this straightened out and restore some quality and hopefully sensible stability...

Ha! It wouldn't be the imaginary Magnolia Conference, but you can't always get what you want.

Go Spiders!

This football conference has become an embarrassing mess of schools.

Our schedule this Fall is quite bad and it appears that it will be getting even worse in the future.

Adding Bryant is the final straw that is moving you to indicate we need to leave the CAA?! C'mon...

Final straw was flosports. Ive been calling for years for A10 football. Socon is probably the best option. Us + WM Elon would be a nice division with VMI/Furman/Wofford. Wont happen of course, but it's nice to dream.

FloSports is literally the worst.

The VA & NC teams aren’t a bad conference (particularly how Campbell is investing). Toss in Nova & Delaware and you’re good. Don’t need to reinvent the wheel or try for perfection. Keep travel easy, build rivalries & interest.

So, if the conference is so weak and we are so much better, I guess we're looking at 10-1. Anything less will be a huge disappointment for many of you.

Not necessarily 10–1 as there is still some quality competition, but the league certainly has been watered down. MSU obviously chalked up as a loss. W&M is great, Elon and URI probably decent. But we're also playing 5 of the bottom 6 in the preseason poll.

Anything less than 8–3 would certainly be a huge disappointment if we're as good as we think/hope we are.
