Bryce Golden - Butler commit

Stupid me was optimistic about Bryce. Grant and TJ both thought we had a strong shot, to not even be mentioned in the final group, shows just how perplexing things are these days.

So to recap our recruiting efforts the last 24 hours:

1. We lost a recruit to McNeese State

2. Had a recruit commit to another school while he was visiting UR

3. Had a recruit who has family connections at UR and likely starting position here with significant minutes, not even put us in his top 6.

Rough day for us to say the least

Other than that, it is a great day to be a Spiders basketball fan!!!!

Our Spring recruiting the past two years has been nothing short of one big sh*t show of failure. That said, this weekend is a pretty big kick in the gnads for Spider fans. Just when you think Mooney can't find a worse way to let you down, he does.

Well, well well. Welcome back 97. Yes, I was very positive that if we landed Bryce and a good grad transfer guard ( I was going to count the kid from Columbia with the Hovde connection as such) possibly Moon could turn this around. But asking too much. As you noted, a $h1t show in progress. We can't land an ice cube in the north pole.

We need more lists.
No actually we need less lists. Every single time we hype a guy on here, he goes elsewhere. Pretty soon, we are going to be hitting the Chicago State pipeline and taking flyers on guys that some assistant at Ohio State looked good one time he saw him. You know it is coming. We all know it is coming.

As 23 said, this is like groundhog day. I've lived through the past couple of springs, I know what is coming.

Wow, looks like the negative talk on here just got turned up a few notches. Bryce's decision does not ruin my optimism at all. I felt a month ago before Stallings was fired and before Bryce became available that we had a chance to be real good next year, and the fact that we did not land a guy that might or might not turn out to be a really good college basketball player does not change that. Good luck to Bryce, but it is not like he would have been a sure thing all A-10 player.

Those of you criticizing Mooney's recruiting are criticizing Jacob, Buck, Nick, Grant, Sal and others. Really? You are not happy with them? Forgive me for thinking these are some real good "gets" the past few years.

I am still very excited about next year. Yes, we need a couple non proven guys to deliver for us, but that is the case with most teams. If Cayo, Sal, and Ford or any of the other redshirts (transfers?) can give us some solid minutes, and I think we will see 2 or 3 of them do just that, look out!

Not for me, those 5 above are CM's best group together of recruits since he's been coach. My issue is CM's inability to coach them (minus Sal) to a level that their talent suggests. It's NCAA bid time in 18-19 for CM or go coach in the Ivy league. Especially with the A10 looking so weak next season, even if OOC record doesn't impress, just WIN the A10 title, no excuses allowed.

And you might have to go back some with posts on the forum, but 97 pointed out the subpar job CM has done with "recruiting" A10 quality bench players. I mean look at this past season, using the bench more doesn't guarantee success but this year's core group could have used more time to rest on the bench. So what does that say about the 3 frosh that redshirted?

On the bright side, Coach just tweeted this out to members of the Spider Insider Club. Potential recruit might have to redshirt, but the talent is clearly there. If he can pull off this signing, those of you writing off Mooney and the Infinite Contract might want to think twice.

Thanks for the humor. Since I am the targetted "problem", "negative poster" I would assume the guy above is saying I am not happy with Gilyard, Buck, etc. If he were to read my other posts, he would see that I was very logical and said I give Mooney credit for landing super players Buck, Gilyard, Sherod, Golden. I mean there are some guys on here that have questioned them. I am all in on them. How's that for positive. My issue with his recruiting is that when he has had talent the last few years, it is only 5 guys - give or take. You need 8-10 to create depth and competition. As I said before I know that Buck and Sherod and Golden are very motivated guys, but they basically show up breathing and they have 30+ minutes/game.

LOL, may have trouble with admissions, but then he meets the diversity standard

But can you play sports and still be a comfort dog during exams. What is the NCAA ruling on that?

Mooney's been running a single high postish offense for a few years now. Posters talk and put up stats showing how efficient it is. No reason for BG to come and compete with his bro for the same spot.

Interesting theory, but I would argue that our most efficient years recently have been with both TJ and TA on the floor simultaneously, both great post players. I think if Mooney has two good post players they will both be on the floor, and they will both pour in a lot of points.

Bryce's list makes sense. I think when it came down to Pitt and UR last time, he decided to forge his own path at a high major over playing with his brother. nothing wrong with that. and he's staying the course.

too bad. he's clearly a very talented kid. would have loved to watch him here.

Yes a bad week of news for Spiders. I can’t even put a silver lining on this. Mooney and his staff have just beaten me into the ground. I will have to leave all the optimistim up to Ulla for now.

I am not at all worried about the latest news because I was not counting on any of these guys anyway. A month ago, Bryce was committed to Pitt, and no one had even heard of the other 2 guys, so the optimism I had at the end of the year a month ago has certainly not changed because of this.

K, I'm with you brother. Bad couple of days. We do still have the slots open, so I am going to try to tone down the negative and wait to see who we get. I prefer two grad transfers - one big and one guard - that can contribute right away. April 11 is soon, though as everyone is beating me over the head with that this is not any kind of significant date - I do think it will begin the process of closing spots at other programs and force some dominos. Let's see what happens. In Mooney I trust.

VT4700, that approach may have been fine when we had our starting 5 coming back. But we also lost one of those starting players this past week too.

Too see a starter decide to transfer out, miss on a couple of promising grad transfers and lose out on the younger brother of one of your best young players is not positive at all. This is the frustration that a lot of us have over Mooney’s inability to recruit a “full team”.

Sure we have 4 good to great looking starters coming back. We have a promising bench guy who needs to learn to shoot. We have a good looking incoming FR that could fill another role off the bench. But we are at least 1 starter and a few more bench players away from being a contender (A10 and NCAA bid).

You need at least 9 guys to complete a rotation. Right now we do not have that. Maybe one of the FR who didn’t play could add to our total. But based on past history those odds are low. Right now I would say we have 4 of our starting 5 and maybe 3 of the next 5.

To me this looks like another year that we are 1 or 2 players away. How many of those have we had recently? Seems like 6-8 years in a row. That is what makes this so frustrating. We need another starter and we probably need our 6th and 7th guys coming off the bench. That could have been filled this week. But clearly Mooney couldn’t close the deal.

We heard all year how you this team was young. It was young because Mooney keeps missing on recruits and cannot build a full team. Next year the excuse will be we are not deep (heard that one before). These should not be excuses. They should be reminders that Mooney is not fully doing his job. When this is mentioned some people bring up that he doesn’t have the facilities or he doesn’t have the support of admissions. Tired of hearing both of these as well.

I am seeing some very good producing grad transfers go on the market and come off. Do any of you insiders know if we are pursuing some more grad transfers. Don't even need names, just want to know if we are looking in this area. Get a guard and a big, and then can see Cayo giving minutes. Will require Tomas or Ford to step up. Asking a lot, but if we can nab two guys that can play now the pieces may fall into place.

I am not as worried about losing Khwan as many of you are. I think for us to be really good next year, we need more size. Someone's minutes were going to be reduced, and it most likely would have been Khwan's.

I think an 8 man rotation is more than enough if it is mixed with enough guards and bigs, but we could be deeper than that. I think Cayo will be a factor, and I am excited about Sal. Also, keep an eye on Ford and don't be surprised if another redshirt helps us next year.

I understand if people are frustrated and concerned, but I have a good feeling about next year.

I can appreciate that. I do think we need to get a backup PG with khwan’s departure. Jacob will play a ton of minutes but we don’t have an identifiable second ball handler with khwan and joe Kirby gone.

We also still have depth questions. Productive bench minutes will have to come from JJ/Nate/Player to be Named. It will be telling to see if any of last year’s redshirts play and how much. At least they all have some height.

.

I hear you brother. I mean we need a couple players to round out our roster and the Moon man always delivers. Remember, chairman Hardt, says that he expects us to have a championship caliber basketball program, so something must be in the works.

Of course, he also promised a full review of the program after the season ended and all I have seen thus far is some flowery e-mail blowing some nicely scented air up my rear. I'm sure that full review is coming just as our championship caliber basketball program because that is what our Athletic Director told us was coming back in January.

With Blake committing, and his connections with Grant while playing AAU, it would have been absolutely perfect for Bryce to also come in and play an immediate and impactful role alongside Grant. Never say never until the paperwork is signed and I am hoping Mooney is still trying his best to recruit him. However, if this ship has sailed, I hope we try and pick up another 2018 PF who is above 6'6''

Woot woot. Blake on board. Excited about this guy - my mood is elevating, just like Brother 97.

Good pick up.

BUT - this does not help for next year unfortunately. Waiting on the next moves. Need a big in a bad way now.

agreed. this is the priority to me. can't be without a serviceable 2nd PG.
unless CM envisions using a current player in that role.

Buck was a PG in high school. Might he slide into our 2 guard position and then we have Cayo/Sal slide into a more natural forward position for us.

yeah, I'm talking about Buck in a limited 5 mpg fashion.

what about Schneider? he's supposedly a very good passing wing guard. how's his handle?

Buck is our only returning player I would trust as a primary ballhandler aside from Jake. But the reality is that right now, our backup PG is Keith Oddo.
This is interesting, I generally don't trust Buck as a ballhandler in traffic. He doesn't make a lot of passing mistakes, but he is prone to losing the handle at times.

Agree - on Buck, hopefully that's a priority for him this summer.

Our backup PG next year will likely only be playing ~5 minutes at PG each game unless they are really good. If Buck does happen to be the backup PG next year it is not the end of the world, and it would make for an interesting scenario. Buck was the tallest player for our team in some lineups this past year and was legitimately the 5 in those lineups. If he plays some time at PG next year I could see some lineups where he is actually the shortest player on the court (tied with Sherod). How often do you think a player has been the tallest in a lineup one year, and the next year on the same team been the shortest in a lineup? How often has a player legitimately played positions 1 through 5 on the same team? Interesting to think about.

I agree with other posters that Buck does have a bit of a turnover problem, but it comes from driving into traffic and not general PG type ball handling duties.
