Bryce Golden - Butler commit

On the bright side, Coach just tweeted this out to members of the Spider Insider Club. Potential recruit might have to redshirt, but the talent is clearly there. If he can pull of this signing, those of you writing off Mooney and the Infinite Contract might want to think twice.
I heard he plays a dogged defense as well as his ability to sniff out an oppents plays

I am not as worried about losing Khwan as many of you are. I think for us to be really good next year, we need more size. Someone's minutes were going to be reduced, and it most likely would have been Khwan's.

I think an 8 man rotation is more than enough if it is mixed with enough guards and bigs, but we could be deeper than that. I think Cayo will be a factor, and I am excited about Sal. Also, keep an eye on Ford and don't be surprised if another redshirt helps us next year.

I understand if people are frustrated and concerned, but I have a good feeling about next year.

What will we do for a back-up PG? We have several options at back-up PG for next year. No one on here seems to list JJ as a viable option, but I believe he could be fine for 5 minutes per game. He played some PG in HS, as I recall. Also, Bryce Shneider looked to me like a very adequate ball-handler last summer, when he was brand new to the program, and before he red-shirted. I suggested he could be our back-up PG then, and got largely laughed off the board. He is also a good passer. My only concern about him is that he needs to make good decisions as a PG, and I saw a few turnovers to go with the good passes and ball-handling. The jury is still out on Bryce, but if he focuses on making good decisions, I am confident he can handle 5 minutes as a back-up PG for us. Buck was also mentioned above, and his biggest issue was trying to dribble through traffic and through double-teams. He can probably spend a few minutes as a PG also. I am less concerned about others about our back-up PG situation.

The biggest question mark in my view: Power forward. If we can get the power forward position solid, with Nate and Sal, and they play well, we should be stronger than last season. I was hoping that Bryce Golden might be in the mix too... Nate is a pretty good ball-handler and a decent outside shooter now. If he can improve his 3-point shooting. with lots of practice over the next few months, the PF slot should be solid too. Nate's 3-point shooting is surprisingly close to Khwan's, in my view, so we gain height and may not loose much on shooting (3s or FTs). .

I think it is a big time compliment to Jacob that we need to only worry about a few minutes a game from a backup PG. Not many true sophomores are counted on for 35+ minutes a game, but after such a great freshman year, we know what we have with Jacob and that is a true PG with a great all around game who does not turn the ball over, and one who gives us all a lot of comfort when the ball is in his hands.

I may be completely misremembering, but didn't AW3's thread get over 100 pages or something insane like that?

Jacob had an awesome freshman year and he's on the way to a great career no doubt. Now, if he rolls an ankle or twists a knee at any point next season we need a reliable backup. It would also be nice to actually be able to give him a rest on occasion since he will be playing 38 minutes a game.

agreed, Cap. but I think we'll have more luck finding a late blooming HS senior for that role than a grad transfer. the grad transfer would be better roster-wise, but most good grad transfer PGs will find a more appealing option than to be Gilyard's backup.

Maybe we can get a game or two against Butler so the Golden brothers will be on the court together?

Sadly I agree, sort of feels like we were the equivalent of his safety school.

Interesting how his mother, his brother , and closeness to home were apparently not
important to him after all.
I wish you speculative experts would pick-up your game.

Wants to play in a better conference, went from the ACC to the Big East. Also playing at a school with better chance to win.

Mom endorsed UR both times he was looking. To me, that was the kiss of death when dealing with a teen. The first time was “I can do it myself” and the second was “I can't admit I was wrong”. While I would love to have Bryce at UR, I respect the decision.
