George Welsh who coached the cavs for 19 years passed away. think he and bill snyder at k-state did the best jobs nationally with two sissy programs and made them relevant and competitive. was having lunch next to him in c-ville one afternoon after he retired and he looked great and glad he had some great years after his coaching days ended. he deserves a monument

It is the same here in Charlottesville. Having also served in the Navy I admired George Welsh for his service to our country. His coaching record speaks for itself.

hey Admiral, recall during our stint at UR and after, uva was referred to by frank howard, legendary clemson coach, as "white meat", he never lost to them. they were a laughing stock and GW made them relevant, took them to new year's day bowls, which was huge back then, had them number 1 for several weeks during one season and was the first acc team to beat florida state after they joined the conf and just never lost a game. he took them from the toilet to the penthouse, a super job.

Another excellent remembrance. (May be behind paywall, unless you know the trick).

One astonishing quote from that article:

Virginia had plenty of football tradition, too — almost all of it bad — when Welsh took over in 1982. Two numbers sum it up: In 28 seasons in the ACC, Virginia had 32 conference wins.

Broc - good article. Would see Welsh on occasion in a local restaurant, a down home place where they still call you "honey", and would exchange a word or two with him. Definitely a smart man who as the article stated was comfortable enough in his skin that he had no need to prove anything. Both Navy and Virginia were fortunate to have him as a coach.
