BEAT PROVIDENCE

Look at the entire season. Please don't tell us that we guard 3 point shooters. Can you honestly say that the 3 point Providence shooters tonight had UR hands up in their face, or in more cases than not there was a Spider within 3 feet when they shot. Providence took what they were given & buried us with 3's. That's the fact.
We finished 197th out of 350 teams.

Surprisingly, we defended the 3 better than Virginia, which most people believe plays outstanding defense.

What makes you believe we have the “best of the best” coaches? Most schools in this country have coaches that are trying to mold their players into better men. It’s a little easier to focus on that when you have a long term contract and financial security. Mooney has had that for over a decade.
As he said in another post, I think he meant Student Athletes, not coaches, since mentioned best at balancing playing, classes, and social life.

We can debate if he is right, but that seems to be the starting point.

Not exactly sure where I said “best of the best coaches”… really confused how you came to that quote? The best of the best are the likes of Nick Saban and Bill Self.

Losing F*ing sucks. We all agree on that. I promise you no one hates losing more than the players and coaches! They hate it way much more than you do!

For the type of school we are and considering how small our student body is and how many recruiting restrictions they have, they win a whole lot in a bunch of sports. Matter of fact, they win on and off the field and court more than a lot of schools. That a huge testament to the coaches and Athletic department. Priorities clearly in order.
Sorry, I misread your post. You were discussing coaches at first then switched to players being the “best of the best” at handling pressures. Not sure how we can say that either when there aren’t the expectations and the pressure to perform that you find in major conferences.

Totally fair. I apologize for being a little bit all over the place. Emotional about the game last night as well.

in regards to the players, the pressures in performance are not exactly comparable to that of major schools. 100% agree. But what few people realize is that they still go through the same process as those that are in major programs. Same schedules for lifts, conditioning, practice, class, study hall, etc.
And also realize, in recent years, the basketball program had a player collapse on the court and had heart surgery only to come back and be an undeniable outstanding player for the team, the baseball program has had a player recover from a cancer diagnosis and this weekend pitch in a game (absolutely incredible!), the football team lost a teammate to suicide and had to rebound and get back on track to lift, go to class, and take finals.

There’s a whole lot more to living up to expectations and pressures than you could imagine. They don’t just happen in major conferences

Last night was a bad night. No doubt about it, and definitely not how we wanted to send these guys out. Those of us who are long-time fans know that in order to beat a program like that, they have to have a really bad night (usually because they overlook us--Syracuse, Iowa) and we have to do everything right.

We did a lot of things right the previous five games, and finally had the ball bounce our way in some of them. Last night was a combination of everything that could go wrong, did, our luck being used up, and our well-documented inconsistencies, poor decisions, and bad shooting nights coming back to haunt us. You can't do that against a top 20 team and expect to win.

A lot of times when we lose on a bad shooting night I say "if a few of those threes had fallen early the game might have been different." I'm not sure the outcome would have changed last night, though maybe the margin might have.

4% from three pt line and 38% from foul line? How is that even possible? If you were throwing the game on purpose you wouldn’t even shoot that bad! SMH

Worst things have happened. We didn’t have to be in this situation at all. All things wor k together for the good. Early this year, we couldn’t imagine this at all. Our team came full circle and carried us on a ride we didn’t think we would take. Thank you Spiders🕷🏀❤️❤️💯

Holy crap... 4%?? 1 for 22. That is nuts. choke job to the highest degree. Every Spider was dreadful last night. No one could hit the ocean. cooley told his guys kick us in the face right from the tip and blow us out of the gym. Our guys responded like freshman, not 5 year seniors.

Did you play ball?

We had no legs left.

As a former Spider football player, I’ve been watching the boards for a long time for multiple sports. Hoops, football and occasionally some of the others. Just so everyone knows, we all know that they exist and read them.

How fast everyone is to criticize players and coaches absolutely baffles me. Don’t get me wrong, I believe the passion and “support” is well intentioned. However, as a bunch of fans and alumni just sitting here on a message board shooting the sh*t, who the hell are we to criticize members of a team who give all that they have 365 days a year when we don’t even know what goes on behind closed doors. These coaches (and their families) dedicate their whole life to helping bring young men success on the field or court and more importantly off of it, in the classroom and community. Winning is obviously a critical point of success when measuring the success of these coaches but far more important is their ability to develop and influence young men to become better people and help make positive impacts in society and their communities. I strongly believe that every coach at the University of Richmond does just that.

For the players, trying to represent a prestigious University with the pressures of winning, school, social life, etc. has to be incredibly challenging. I personally believe that Richmond has the best of the best at handling these pressures. Why are we criticizing them? We have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Let’s stop acting like these people are our entertainment and appreciate their successes on the field, court and representing the University of Richmond.
Well said ✊🏼

Emotional toil is the biggest energy drain and when those 3s kept dropping and our shots were limited to
just Cayo, our physical energy was lowered to the land of no return. Did not matter what year you were.
We did not give up, we just ran into a buzz saw totally out of our control. I hate the result and score difference
but shooting inefficiency became an epidemic and does not reflect the true ability of this team.

I realize 67 out of 68 teams end on a loss, but I still find it annoying that our last game in the NCAA is always a thrashing. SMC 2010...throttled from the start ... Kansas 2011...bombed from the get-go. Yestetday speaks for itself.

Even the NIT losses, save Miami, which was really "special" in its own right.

A loss on a buzzer-beater would be an exciting change.

I guess you or your team never had an off day. That has nothing to do with being a freshman or otherwise.
I'm not even sure what that means. I played lots and I ran several 10Ks per year at a very competitive rate up until 10 years ago, I'm 71. Your legs, which you use for distance shooting and foul shooting, don't have a chance to recover fully given the number of games Richmond played in the last 9/10 days. I don't care how young or in shape you are. Why do you think the training staffs of major colleges, including Richmond, have recovery programs for their athletes? If it was as easy as taking a day off they wouldn't be needed. If you play most of the game, you run about 2 miles per game, included in that are extreme cuts, stops, starts, and jumping. Climb out from behind your computer and do that, take a day off, do it again and get back to me.

Crap, I was a waiter and my legs got tired.

Wisconsin 04.....Washington 98 (F*** Todd McCullah). Best loss was St. Joe's in 86 by 1. To be honest I look back at that missed Jameer Nelson shot against OK St in 2004 and being absolutely devastated for St. Joes. IDK how I would handle a loss like that. Not that I enjoy a thrashing either...I think it just sucks to lose in the tourney lol

I was at UR during the Tarrant days. Had a couple of guys tell me on more than one occasion if you are going to lose in basketball the "preferred margin" was around 10-12 or so points. Enough that you can't point to one missed free throw, one bad call, one more made basket, etc. Not so much that you get embarassed--so that the low double digit margin suggests you ran into a better team. Or at least one that was having a much better game. That has always seemed like a reasonable view to me.

Plan in the first half was to double the post and force them to make 3's. Providence has not shot 3's all season like they did today. Hell, they didn't make that many 3's in warm ups.

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks.

Still proud of the team.
agreed. you're going to get and give up some open shots in every game. Providence pounds the ball inside and usually doesn't shoot well ... particularly Minaya and Durham. we want those two shooting. I'm ok with the scheme. but those two killed us early.

and we couldn't throw it in the ocean.

great run though.

Well now 40 point second half, but…4 for 22 from three

They could use 24 more points…

KU was ALL over them defensively especially the first half. Without Remy they don't win the Big12 tourney, lose to Creighton and also tonight. Since Remy is completely healthy now, he's the difference maker in KU winning or losing. Ogbaji other than the alley-top dunk near the end and Braun were offensively MIA tonight. KU is underrated defensively. They were aggressively focused tonight.

Like Scott Drew stated in the pre game show on CBS, the Big 12 plays tough D.

Houston was 1-for-20 on 3-pointers on Saturday. I guess Kelvin didn't have them ready to play. I wonder what their expressions were when they came out of the locker room out to the court?
