Minaya - So Carolina

Guess Providence doesn’t have a Rival’s board. No comments from the next opponent. I miss the intel that the Iowa fans provided. My take on the Friars is that they also have a chip on their shoulder as most picked them to lose against the Jackrabbits in round 1. They did finish first in the Big East regular season, a league that most on this Forum wish Richmond was in. Second, the team is experienced, so no significant edge for the Spiders there. Last, the Friars won lots of close games. This means no panic from them in crunch time to me even though the popular opinion seems to be that they were lucky to win those games and it is time for things to regress to the mean.

I have watched the Big East for a long time and all the teams play physical, so there won‘t be any post game comments about how physical the Spiders are. Providence has been playing well for a number of seasons and Ed Cooley is a quality coach. I expect a game that is too close to call and is probably going to come down to which team stays out of foul trouble and hits critical free throws.

The one edge that we can draw upon even though it is small, is the fact that TB’s father played there.

Cayo has a way of being totally "locked in" and unflappable. Doesn't shrink back from challenges and keeps after it.

I am trying to figure out a guard I would trade Gilly for in the tournament. I can't think of one. This is a good thing. Golden had a bit of a rough offensive game, and I look for a bounce back. Burton is playing very good. Moved his feet great on defense and what I love, is he is playing with that "Kevin Smith" edge. That whole interaction with Touissant was hilarious, and shows just how locked in he is. We have a team of guys playing at their best level all year. Heck, we had been calling for this version of Gilly all year, maybe it was good he "hid" it until now - if you scouted games from two months ago, you would say he is not going to hurt you shooting and just play the pass. Now he is hurting you at three levels, running the show and directing traffic. Special run.
Yes we need Golden to make his layups. Gilyard gave him great passes and GG missed a bunch. I expect GG to be more relaxed and calm in game 2 and finish those shots off.

If Cayo and Golden ever both turn in 6 for 9 or 7 for 10 type of games, we are unstoppable. Cayo had one yesterday, Golden obviously did not.

Gilyard and Company are trying to make history. Seems like we’re living through a major collective life transformation we all new was possible, but is still surreal. Proud to see them boys on the main stage without any fear.

I found the Providence Basketball Blog. They are pleased to be playing Richmond and are certain the they will win.

I hope Richmond gets ****ing destroyed tomorrow. CHRIS MOONEY of all people isn’t allowed to win even one game in the tournament if tech can’t get out of the first round. His soft ass team and soft as self has no business being in there to begin with. Lucky bastard took advantage of covid more than anyone and doesn’t deserve this.
Tech sucks.

You off your meds again?

I’m a little unhinged right now admittedly. I honestly don’t even care about winning the acc last week anymore. I don’t wanna see mooney in the sweet 16 though. A shit coach like him doesn’t deserve that.
What does Tech #11 losing to Texas #6 have to do with Chris Mooney or the Richmond Spiders? Get a grip. Guess Richmond will have to rep the state of Virginia. Go Spiders.

I recommend heavy drinking and a handful of the pot gummies.
I’m actually not drinking for 3 months to lose some weight. I haven’t drank since New Year’s Eve and gonna stay off until my birthday which is April 3rd. I quit the weed years ago too. Just have to suffer through this one and hope mooney doesn’t get to the sweet 16. I’ll probably feel differently tomorrow after some sleep.

Seems to me that the Providence offense depends heavily on free throws. If we can defend without fouling I like our chances.

It appears this is leading up to being a rock fight. I don't know much about the Friars other than they win close games. Can we hold our own on the inside? What kind of size do they have.

Providence’s only losses this year were against UVA, Marquette, Nova twice, and Creighton.

They know how to win close games. They’re 13-2 in games decided by 5 points or less. Don’t let them stick around

Does the fact that they have two former A10 players help (they might not be as big) or hurt (they will be more famliar with us)?

Providence is a very good team with a 26-5 record. Most surprising part of their season was scoring only 40 points in their loss to UVA in the Legends Classic. Let's encourage them to have the same kind of awful shooting nights they had against Virginia and against Creighton in the Big East semifinal - 30.8 % shooting percentage including 12.5% from 3 range - 3 for 24............having a total of 58 points.........they did end the San Diego State streak of 21 wins in the first round......have split their lost 4 games ................we are playing "hotter" now - let's keep it going!

The 58-40 loss to UVA was last November, but of course they are a different team now ;)

How did that thinking work out yesterday?

My son's Little league coach went to Providence. I've known him almost 15 years, great guy. Tonight at an OSU baseball game we start trading friendly jabs, I mention I had a friend I worked with at a newspaper more than 30 years ago who went to PC, and it turns out she was his roommate's girlfriend.

Small world.

Cool story…

And getting us back on track. Richmond leads the entire way tomorrow with a final score of Spiders 71, Providence 61.

Seriously dude, GFY (not you 72, the dipshit Tech fan).

Yeah, maybe off on a tangent, but it's amazing how small this big world is. More than 330 million people in the US and often there are less than 3 or 4 degrees of separation between people.

I was a PC fan growing up, they had Lenny Wilkins, Jimmy Walker, Ernie D, Kevin Stacom, Bad News Barnes and the best name ever, Nehru King, and great coaches in Joe Mullaney and Dave Gavitt. If you lived in the Northeast like I did PC hoops was a big deal.

They don't seem to have one dominant player. Their big guy is 6-10 and their leading scorer at 13 ppg. They have a 5-10 guard who is their best three point threat. And beyond that a balanced attack, kind of like Iowa. I think we match up pretty well.
The motivation is with us. Tenacity prevail!

Prediction #5….
No way we beat Providence!! They are a beast of a team. Only 3 losses in the BE all year. Spiders shouldnt even show up. The moment is way too big for UR. Providence wins every close game, play amazing D and can rebound like an NBA team.
Spiders lose BIG!!
