At St Louis

VT4700, again, you need to tell Mooney and his players that conference games are important. This should be done ASAP, before they make you look really foolish.

I know, I know there are plenty of games left. You said 15-3 in conference would get the at-large bid. Only have to go 15-1 the rest of the way to make that happen. What do you think the odds are?

Nah VT's a 14-4 guy. I think he's typed 14-4 in the last 2 years possibly more than any human on Earth. Bots like spider23 don't count.

when did St. Louis last play? because last year I distinctly remember that covid pauses were an excuse we used. Funny not funny how these excuses never seem to apply in the reverse.

Was thinking the same thing. It was a huge problem for us last year, though not for other teams. And we've now gotten roasted back to back by two teams playing their first games back from prolonged covid breaks. Hmm.

You guys are forgetting the D3 clash with my st Mary’s or whoever that was last year. We crushed those guys coming out of pause.

And every year Richmond must win the conference tournament to get in the NCAA Tournament. I've said before, if we have to win the conference tournament, then let's play in a league where we have a realistic chance to win the tournament, like every year. I'd rather be in the CAA and dance every other year than almost never in the A10.

Or get a new coach and AD....
I think CAA is right . If this is best team ever then CAA is the place. But I like how Davidson can put the puzzle together every year . It is all now a mystery to me.

we can excel at this level, we need the team, the fans, and the administration on the same page to accomplish the result. this does not mean give up on academics or open the door to anything goes before the naysayers jump up

Agree Fan1, JB showed it could be done, even with a roster recruited in the CAA. I was a proponent of staying in CAA at the time we made the move, but I think we are in a good place in the A10, we just need admin backing, new AD and new coach and fee l like we can take off. It's just a tough grind waiting out Mooney, not knowing if Hardt will make the next hire. We need to steel ourselves for another 3 to 5 years of mediocrity.

Fezz, I always value your analysis. If you were our coach, what would you do different from Mooney (other than dress better)?

I will say it one more time: the A10 produces at large teams every year (most years more than 1 at large). Our lack of bids/success is on UR, not the A10. The fact that the school fails to address the issues or care about a winning program is maddening if you continue to care about it as a fan.

My thoughts of the game, for whatever it's worth (which is not much, admittedly):

1. It is enraging to watch us not be able to do very simple defensive things like figure out how to guard a curl. If you are going to chase the cutter around the curl, then the guy guarding the man setting the second pick has to hedge ENOUGH TO STOP THE CURL. Not some BS half-ass hedge that doesn't even make the guy tap the brakes. We sort of did it a little bit in the second half, but good god, why did it take until halftime. I don't know if that's coaching or execution or both, but it's abysmal. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my kid's 6th grade rec basketball team defends this more appropriately and consistently.

2. Cayo going 1v1 against a taller, more physical defender with under 4 minutes left when we absolutely need a bucket is not, and cannot ever be, the offensive choice.

3. We are back to making the losing plays. Grant's three turnovers were absolute killers, and each was totally unacceptable. Zay fouling Jimerson on a three point jumper after we cut it to three was a backbreaker. Cayo's shot selection. Missing wide open three pointers. Not getting the ball to Tyler and isolating him. Having the help defense on the drive come from the guy covering the shooter in the corner. Grant backing off Yuri Collins with 2 on the shot clock to let him fire an open three pointer. Dumb stuff like that.

4. Rotation was aimless. It was good that he basically left Tyler and Jacob alone, but some offense/defense subs for Cayo and Zay were called for. We needed either Crabby and/or Sherod in for offense in the last 4 minutes. I don't mind the Zay/Dji platoon at the 2, but it was way too heavy to Zay yesterday. Generally, I think Mooney is uncomfortable and doesn't manage it well when the rotation is more than 8 guys. He can kind of do 9 if the 9th guy is somewhere between 8-12 minutes. Anything more than that, he's just subbing guys in to get a few minutes, but it's not purposeful. As harsh as it is on a couple of guys, the rotation needs to be pared down to 8 1/2 guys. I personally would have it be Grace, Crabtree, and Bailey, with a smattering of Sherod for offense.

Lot of good points in here. I think CM has to trim Nicks time. He’s had four good games out of 15 and he’s a pretty big liability on defense and not much help on offense when his shot is off.

Maybe put him in if we have nothing going on O and need an outside spark.

The unforced errors yesterday definitely were what broke the teams back.

Amazing that after 17 years and after the majority of our starters having been here this long we are weak on fundamentals. And fundamentals are SUPPOSED to be taught top down.

You're right B, the A-10 does indeed get at large bids every year. Richmond is just not one of them. And we can "compete" for these at large bids....with a different coach.

I think Nick needs to play more. We cannot shoot and he has proven that he can. Let’s get him to 28 minutes and 10-12 shots a game. We can put him in the post where he scored from two years ago. Maybe his matchup will be better than Cayo’s. He will rebound some as well.

You are correct. Sherod’s 12 points and 5 rebound is more than we get out of all but two players.

Lots of good points here, kneepad, was watching all your "point 3 losing plays" with my son and we had same reactions.

Spiderfriend, been making that point about lack of competition for PT for years and think it is an oft overlooked issue. It is part recruiting failure and part misplaced loyalty imo.

Hard to argue with that. If we're going to shoot 30+ threes a game, I'd just as soon have Nick shooting a third of them.
Which Nick do we get though? The Nick who misses his first 8 shots, or the Nick who makes his last 5?

Yep, that's pretty much my thinking. If he takes 13 threes, he's going to make a decent number most nights.

Sherod is just so slow now is painful to watch at times. Even when he drives now, he gets no elevation, his body is just not capable of doing what it used to do.

Big guard with Gilyard ,extend pressure defense ,mental focus drills
This all seems kind of obvious to me and I’m far short of amateur. It feels like it should be more obvious to the pros running things.
