Around the A-10: 2024–25 Edition

A-10 goes 7–2 today with Dayton over Marquette, Bona over Providence, and VCU over Colorado State. Only losses were La Salle to UNC and of course us.

Spiders dead last in the A-10 in KenPom at 209, though Duquesne (205) and UMass (206) aren't much better.

Good wins by the A10 tonight with Bonnies over Providence, VCU over Colorado State, and Dayton over Marquette. Bonnies, VCU, Dayton, Loyola, and Rhode Island in good chance to be at-large with a good A10 performance. Key OOC games left for at-large bids:

Loyola v. U. San Francisco
VCU v. New Mexico
Dayton v. Cincinnati
Dayton v. UNLV
George Mason v. Duke (if Mason pulls this off they will certainly be back in at-large convo)
Temple v. Rhode Island

Less key for team getting at-large but still good wins for A10
SLU v. Illinois State
SLU v. Grand Canyon
Davidson v. Temple
Virginia Tech. SJU
Arizona State v. UMass

2024 final kenpom numbers:

Dayton 32
VCU 75
Duquesne 88
Richmond 89
UMASS 92
Loyola 93
Mason 97
St. Joe's 99
St Bona 102

2025 kenpom:

Dayton 26
VCU 42
Mason 81
St Bona 82
Rhode Island 93
Loyola 94
St Joe's 104
Davidson 115
GW 145

He uses kenpom for reference, and then says A 10 is stacked? Not according to kenpom, they aren't.

Its a bad year for UR to not be competitive in the A10. First time in many years there are multiple teams having good OOC seasons. It would have been exciting.

Dayton has already played the same amount of Q1 games that we are projected to play all season, good grief. Not that it matters since we weren't going to be contending for an at-large bid anyway it's just sad to see the gulf between them and us. They beat the back to back defending national champs by 20 and we lose to Marist and Bucknell for Pete's sake 😫

Dayton's win over Marquette catapulted them from 38th last week to #22 in the AP poll and from 44th to #24 in the coaches poll.

Bonnies are 10-1. Not a great schedule - but they have a chance to enter A10 play with only 1-2 losses.
VCU of course has looked good - they have another good game coming up with New Mexico.
St. Louis is 6-4 - but I Avila has battled ankle injuries. If he stays healthy - I think that is a dangerous team in the A10.
St. Joes is doing St. Joes things. Should be good - but stumbled to 6-4 so far. But again - another team to keep an eye on in A10 play.
Dayton - making a case already for at-large bid contention. Big win vs. Marquette - but they also have UNLV and Cincy coming up. They win both those games - they will continue to climb.

On the CBS basketball show, Nolander said he thinks the A10 can get 3 teams in the NCAAs this year. I think the OOC results give the A10 a much better shot at 2 again this year, but I will be surprised if the A10 manages to get 3.
All but Dayton will need to win the A10 tournament.

VCU could play themselves into the bubble - but they will need to win rest of OOC and beat Dayton in A10 play. Their scheduling gives them Dayton twice, if they can beat them once - it will give them a boost. And of course - they likely need to finish top 2-3 in the A10.

Not saying it puts them in at-large bid, but gets them in conversation.

Other than that - agree - everyone pretty much needs to win A10 tourney.

Woj will get Bonnies in. Dayton in. VCU will get in one way or the other, it's what they do. They have the brand now.
True - I do think at the end of the day, it is a committee of humans making the selections. And if your a team like VCU - who has had a history of making the tourney, sometimes winning games - its hard to ignore that fact when you might come up against 2 resumes that are very similar. Its not everything - but it certainly doesn't hurt to have that on your side.

Bonnies - we will see if they are real come A10 play. Their schedule is not great, but not awful either. And give them credit - they have taken care of business.

I wonder - what would our NET be if we had won lets say all of our games - except Auburn and Belmont. Where would that have placed us?

OT. Wow, Hubert is getting worse and worse. I think they gave up offensive rebounds on about 15 straight possessions. Either coaching or recruiting but no one that can grab a board.
Belichick and Golden in the Carolinas tonight? Lock up your daughters.

And get off my lawn 😀😃🙂

rankings seem right.
can anyone help me with the guy on line 2 and the "pants" guy?

My question is he advocating for USF-west to replace UMass?

UMass is at the botton ... can't see it unless you click.
he included San Fran as a joke because they played 3 A10 games.

Other than Dayton who from the A1O will make the NCAA's if they don't win the A10 tournament?

Who you got?
Dayton as single seed, Woj strong arms committee for Bonnie’s first four, and you guys win in DC…

3 teams have 1 loss. Bonnies RI and Loyola. Are you saying that if they finish OOC play with just 1 loss and then go 14-4 in league play, going 27-5, they wouldnt have a chance to get a bid? If thats the case, why even play the damn games? I think you are way off here. A10 will be viewed as having a strong year by virtue of a number of teams having strong OOC records.

Yes, no chance

Apparently some have forgotten the schedule discussion at the beginning of the year.
The A-10 is making itself a one bid league with these schedules. We need some leadership from the A-10 office.
Spiderman did some digging and compiled this list early on
schedules aren't all complete, but I took what was available so far on D1docket ... excluding non-D1 games and excluding 2nd and 3rd games in MTEs if they're unknown. think they use Torvik rankings but they change from day to day for some reason. averaged the A10 ooc opponent's ranking.

1) Dayton 150
2) Duquesne 151
3) SLU 165
4) UMass 180
5) SJU 183
6) GMU 183
7) VCU 186
8) LaSalle 191
9) URI 195
10) UR 198
11) LUC 208
12) Fordham 210
13) Davidson 230
14) SBU 233
15) GW 270

surprisingly we're not far from the average A10 schedule.
Later there was a graphic post from X that now isn’t showing in the thread, but it was a final review once all the schedules were complete and suffice to say there wasn’t any improvement. Dayton is the only team with a quality OOC and they have won. Dayton can get in the tournament as an at large. The rest need an A10 tournament victory.

As I have said numerous times, the A-10 needs to go to a 20 game IC schedule.

Using NET not including future games I think, here is a sample…

Dayton 55

UR 199

GMU 94
Davidson 116
St Joe 239
Bonnie’s 266
VCU 308
Loyola 336
URI 351
