A good friend asked me to sign the petition. Aron Stewart was before my time and I never saw him play. I understand that he was one helluva player, but there may be some controversy with respect to his involvement at the University. My friend suggests that it is unjustified. However, before I get on board, I would like to learn a little more about the situation.
Would someone "in-the-know" please shed some light on what this is all about?

Petition to Retire Jersey

Best player at UR in my era (1972-76). Simply a man among boys on our teams of that era, and he performed at a very high level against the very best teams we played.

I think he got sideways with UR about our failure to induct him into the HOF in a timely fashion. I thought that issue had been resolved.

Not a big believer in retired jerseys. A ring of honor or somesuch display within the arena bowl or in the lobby is better.

This will shed more light.

That petition has been up a while. There is bad blood. But he was well before my time so I can't really speak to that or the history. By not going to HOF ceremony I'm sure it didn't help his cause. Obviously a great player and certainly his HOF induction was overdue. But it's really hard to have jersey retired as a 2 year player. I agree with Wood Hall I'd rather not retire jerseys anyway. In very rare cases I guess, and Newman and Anderson would best fit. There are only so many legal numbers in basketball, its not very practical.

When did English wear 23 (Warren Mills' number), and when did he wear 30 (Aron Stewart's number)?

Great player, already in the Hall of Fame. I'm not big on retiring jerseys either and, with all due respect, a one and a half year starter probably doesn't merit that anyway. Guys like Kevin Eastman, Mike Perry, Kenny Atkinson, and Curtis Blair come to mind as also making a tremendous impact on Spider basketball and they all played all 4 years and have gone on to have careers in basketball and increase the profile of the Spider brand. Deserving of the Hall of Fame for sure, and maybe sooner than he got it, but I'm not sure this campaign is going to help his cause too much.

I don't know Warren Mills's history at UR. But to compare Stewart to Newman or Anderson it's not comparable. I don't know what Stewart's beef is or what he hopes to get out of it, etc.? He was a great player, I enjoyed watching him play but so was Bob McCurdy, Mike Perry, and the list goes on and on and on.

Sad situation and Aron hurts no one other than himself being embittered. Wish him all the best for the future and hope for his sake he can find peace about the matter. Being in the Richmond HOF is a tremendous compliment.

Aron Stewart, Eric Gray and Bob McCurdy may have been the best 3-5 positions playing at the same time
in UR history. It was so much fun watching this group drive teams crazy on offense due to fact you could not
concentrate on just one.

Saw him play and was undergrad when he played. Do not believe jersey should be retired and/or in ring of honor.
