A perfect Mooney night.

On the night, Mooney received his 14 year participation trophy in front of half full Robins Center who gave him a polite golf clap for his efforts, he gave all of us a perfect summation of his tenure, but putting together a putrid performance against a team that had 1 D-1 win and was sub 300 in the RPI.

A couple of the lowlights:
1. After the team came out with tons of energy and aggression in its last 2 games, they came out in the more typical Mooney cerebral approach to the game. There was little sense of urgency, going through the motions of the Mooney style offense and defensive approaches.
2. After 2 games, where Mooney used his bench liberally, he was back to his old ways, essentially playing a 6 man rotation. Sal, who showed us something the last 2 games, got a grand total of 2 minutes.
3. Yates and Johnson played a combined 47 minutes, scored a combined 3 points on 1-11 shooting. No need to get other players in the game, when your getting that type of contributions from these two, I suppose.
4. Gilyard got ZERO rest. I wonder why his 3 pointers were a bit off in the second half, maybe he could have benefited from a blow or two during the game?
5. Energy in the building was again slightly above the resting heart rate of Mooney. Biggest cheer of the nights was when ORU missed 2 FT's and everyone got a free Bojangles coupon. If fairness to the crowd, there is not much to get excited about when you go 4-30 from 3 point land and the players on the court look like they are half beaten most of the time (except for Gilyard, feel bad for that dude, he plays so hard, wants to win so badly).

At the end of the night, we all got what we have become very accustomed to from our all time losing coach, another loss. The whole night was on Mooney, the disinterested crowd, another unacceptable home loss against a terrible team, and the worst part of all, no sense of being upset about the loss from Mooney postgame. He too has become all too accustomed and comfortable with losing.

97,

You pretty much nailed it. The thing is we met expectations.

I would agree with all your points but to #5 - "energy in the building". I noticed it picked up when they were shooting free t-shirts & Papa John Pizza balls.;)

You have to go back quite a few years to find energy in the Robins Center at least FOR the Spiders. I am sure it is going to be like a ODU home game on Wednesday night.

I agree with the summary that started this post except I think Cayo had just as much energy as Gilyard. I was hoping Gilly would be able to carry the team, but as mentioned he obviously didn’t get any rest and I don’t think he is over the groin issue. Not having Andre is why he didn’t get any rest though.

Mooney was relying on Yates and Wojcik to deliver from 3 and they didn’t.

We better hope Golden gets out of his funk as well. The only explanation I have is that he is trying too hard. The only bright spot was that he didn’t try to go outside and shoot 3s too.

Looks like we will continue to suck until The Moon leaves.

I think Mooney's substitution strategy in the game was gutless. When you are 4-5 and have losses to Hampton and Longwood, you can't shorten your rotation to 6 people. You can't tell me having Sal out there for 10 minutes, or Grace for 8, or even Schneider for 5, was going to break the game, or the season. Both Sal and Bryce can drive pretty well, and Grace appears to be a very good distributor.

This, plus the really bizarre, pointless double teaming of a big guy 20 feet from the basket causing horrible defensive rotations, were the two worst aspects of Mooney today.

On the other hand, this is one of those games where the players need to wear it. Golden missed 137 shots from within 5 feet, and Woj, Gilyard, Julius, and Yates missed 137 wide open three pointers. The offense, even against the zone, worked well enough to get many, many open shots, and they simply didn't make them.

Oops sorry, I had forgotten that the moderators suggested that I "take a break". So please disregard my above post (if it's still there).

I went to the restroom when this was going on. Couldn't in good conscience stand there and clap.
