A-10 Standings

We do need to take it "one game at a time." If we failed to take it one game at a time, and were silly enough to look ahead, we also have an important game next Sunday, against 1st-place Davidson, who we KNOW we are capable of beating
However, the minute a team starts "looking ahead," even by one game, bad things tend to happen. Playing "in the moment" is the only way to win consistently. So, my hope is that our entire team will focus totally on this Wednesday's game ONLY.

Correct. However, teams tend to separate themselves from the pack, at this juncture. That separation tends to hold into the A10 tournament.

Not much use in looking ahead when you are 6-13. Each game is an NCAA tournament game for them now. They may as well have fun, learn and get better.

Just how tenuous is this team's surge? This team is learning how to win. It has developed character and strength.

Exactly, the only games that matter for us are 4 games in March during the A-10 tourney. Same scenario as the past 6 years under Mooney.
Nope. Every game matters as it is possible to get a top four seed and only have to win three games in the A10 tournament. We are currently tied with vdu and Saint Joe’s for fourth place. Let’s go Spiders!!

Ulla, you make a great point. A top 4 seed would be critical...especially with our bench situation. The way the conference looks we could get on a roll or be out after one game. I'm admittedly in the "negative Nancy" side of this board but I can acknowledge that these young guys are playing much better (particularly on offense) the last few games. I'm genuinely happy for them. I just want us to be in a position where we don't have to win the conference tourney to get into the NCAA's every year. Build a team that can win OOC games and be in a position for an at large bid every few years.

I don't know the league rules on this, but I suspect we would be ranked ahead of VCU, based on head to head match up. That is why I think we would be in a solid 3rd place if we beat Duquesne.

don't forget we also lost to Fordham and St Louis I would assume we lose most of the tiebreakers

Tie breakers are head-to-head record, then record against best team in common. Unless we are tied with Fordham or SLU at the end of the season those losses should not be a factor in tiebreakers since they will not be one of the best teams in the conference. The win against Davidson is big for tiebreakers.

Having lost to those two actually bodes well for tiebreakers. It suggests that we’d likely also have some better wins compared to whoever we’re tied with since our records would be the same. Tiebreakers emphasize comparing performance against the best teams the tied teams played, not the worst.

I stand corrected, I didn't go back to read the rules on the A-10 boards until after your post. My recollection was the old rules looked at bad losses.

But remember head to head is “as a group” and will change twice a week for a while.

For anyone interested in rooting against VCU tonight, their game with Saint Louis is starting on CBS sports network.

St. Louis place was empty.
What a complete and utter choke job by St. Louis. I'm sure the local media will talk about the "great" VCU comeback but the reality is SLU just crapped the bed. Shot several air balls, careless turnovers, missed FT's and then letting the only guy on VCU who could tie the game with a 3 get a good look. And that was all in the last 4 minutes. They put on a clinic of 101 ways to lose a basketball game and then still had VCU beat but of course they miss the clinching FT and then allow VCU to hit the three at the end to tie.

And whomever the announcer was for that game, gratitous use of the word "WOW". It was like he was broadcasting the National Championship game instead of two .500 A-10 teams. He made it interesting to watch, but context my man.

Three or More-Team Tie

1. Head-to-head competition.
a. Use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than performance against individual teams. When comparing records against a group of teams, the higher winning percentage will prevail...

It appears that Richmond is in sole possession of 3rd place.

And if we beat Davidson next, which I admit will be difficult on their court, we would be in 2nd place in the A10
