8-23!!

It was the 2014-2015 season.

to me that was the hardest of all vcu losses. Tho Pitt one is close second.

now we likely get another shot. I don’t know if that is a good thing w our history. And vcu needs to win or else expected NIT bound. But here we are. Some day we will stop giving the bully our lunch money.

Beating VCU in the tournament would be just short of a miracle considering our softness countering their determination and toughness. We would need to should 50%+ from 3 and we still would probably lose. They will kill us on the glass and eat Golden up inside.

I am genuinely dreading the A10 tournament. Either we get embarrassed by URI or VCU or whomever. Or we win a game or two and get ready for Mooney4Life contract extension.
8Legs, same here, we have essentially backed ourselves into a lose, lose situation.

I get those feelings. Keeping Mooney should truly be an untenable situation if we don't win A10 tourney. So it would be nice to finally knock VCU out just once. But I'm looking at it from a reasonable normal perspective not the Big Hat No Cattle/Queally/Hallock oh I'm too new to make big decisions status quo/Coach for Life admin perspective. Hell small chance they could keep Moon we lose to VCU so let's at least knock them out. Best case scenarios...win the A10 (unlikely) or knock out VCU then lose after still make coaching change. Worst case...beat VCU, then lose to not make NCAA, keep Mooney, but watch as VCU still gets bid on name recognition & history and some other bubble results that go their way. I would need to heavily self medicate.

I know it is hard to keep up with the VCU losses at the A-10 Tournament but:

2013-2014 Beat Duquesne then (0-3) vs VCU
2014-2015 First game was first loss to VCU (2-1)
2016-2017 Beat GW then (0-3) vs VCU

Mooney is kind of like a bully in this sense, isn’t he? We gotta stop giving him our lunch money.

This team is done and we all know it. It's not going to catch a second wind and win four in a row. It's going to do what Mooney has caused it to do all year long and fall short when it matters most.
No, I do not know this to be true. I think they have the talent and the potential to win this tournament.

They’ve beaten SLU and SBU and have played Dayton, VCU and Davidson.

Do you believe in miracles? I do but this is not what it would be if Richmond pulls it off.

It is a Sophie's choice for sure. I am all in for the long term future of our program though and that future has to be without Mooney, so whatever needs to happen this weekend to finally cut the cord with Mooney needs to happen.

It really would be a miracle though. Yeah, we played all those teams close at home... and still only went 2-3 against them. And got beaten by SLU on the road and killed by VCU on the road.

Now we would likely need to beat three of them in three days without any homecourt advantage, when we have only made it to one A10 semifinal in the past decade.

My money would be on it not happening, obviously, but crazier things have happened.

You should write presser material for Moonie. "they have played Dayton, VCU, and Davidson" seriously? So we are pumping up the mere fact that we have played the top teams in the conference. REALLY? Well raise a banner for playing a conference schedule I guess.

Haha relax 8legs1poorattitude. I meant to add “close” at the end of that sentence but didn’t in my haste. Sorry for the omission and causing so much angst on your side.

but you are right, I can work in the press department as they make a lot of attention to detail mistakes too. :)

Actually, you would fit right in at our press department.

And with a shortened bench with the exception of the last game at St Bon where Mooney did give a very few mins to others. If multiple games in a short span, he will need the bench to play and step up.

Well if there were such a bet you’d probably have to put up a grand to win like $40
I know the odds are like +750 for us to win the whole thing, I'm thinking whomever set that line hasn't watched this team play every game like most of us have. We would have to beat 3 really good teams in a row in 3 days, when we haven't beat 3 good teams period all year.

Right that's why vegas & the online books make money. Just falls in line with what they deem to be 6th most likely team to win. You get less deserved payout on a bet to win. But yet u would have to put up more on a bet against...if they were such a line. Tho there are pro bets for instance to YES/NO make the playoffs. Just saying if there was a pre-tourney bet for Richmond to NOT win the A10 it would not be -750. No way in hell. Which is the reverse of +750. Our true odds to win are more like +2000 or even +2500 if you believe the math guys like kenpom bart torvik etc. Of course vegas is going to work in their advantage as expected but it should really be higher than +750.

Hell, we all know the URI game is 50/50

It is. Remember URI was up on us big time in the first half and then fell apart. URI was also missing their starting PG and second leading scorer for that game. On the negative side, URI has only one once since we beat them back in late January, a win over Duquesne, their first round match up.

I think URI match-ups well with us, certainly can not overlook them.

I did go watch Davidson play at URI in February, so they have won two. They physically dominated Davidson that game. Sheppard, who missed our game, scored 23 points against Davidson, quick and can shoot it. So I would fully expect a tough game.

I was going to say that. Starting with GW, they are 2-11. One is Duquesne, the other Davidson...

So, will Sheppard be healthy after the Duquesne game?

No Sophie's choice. I don't think they will fire him even if he loses in the game on Thursday. A program that values making it to the tournament and winning would definitely fire Mooney. But not ours. They value having a coach that is nice and wins just enough to tease success sometimes.

8-23 here we come!! The first half tonight was a total clown show. URI blew two 15 point leads don't expect VCU to blow huge leads.

With a loss tonight we sink to new depths of Mooniocrity at 7-23 and 0-4 in the A10 tournament. I just don't think the team has it in them gut out a win here. VCU is in our heads, we are in our own heads, and we have a professional loser at the head of our team.
UVA football did lose to Clemson 29 straight times before a ‘90 win I remember well … and USA hockey won in ‘80 …. miracles can occur

Such a critical statement game tonight. It is unfortunate that this team has failed to rise to the challenge in these key situations up to this point.

Here's to hoping they cowboy up tonight and really play like beating VCU is the most important thing in the world. We know they are capable of heart. It is time to demonstrate it.

Today is the 4 year anniversary of the first wrenching loss to them in the semis in Cline and SJ3’s last year. If we had pulled that out we might have won the auto bid who knows. That was the last time I actually rooted really hard for UR. Maybe we get some reverse mojo today.

Five year anniversary actually. Hard to believe. We had that game and gift-wrapped it to them. I may have attempted to damage infrastructure at PPG Arena afterwards.

& I'm still bitter we ran iso end of reg with shawndre. That may have been ok in some situations but he had the best athlete on court on him, an NFL player, and he took a very contested jumper.

That said I think it still falls behind the Brooklyn A10 loss which is saying a lot.

VCU takes our lunch money and crushes souls. 7-22 what else is there to say.

Eventually you have to get tired of getting your ass kicked. The biggest problem to me is Mooney's nothing to see here/well we had good practices approach where he doesn't take it personally in any way. and that filters to our teams.

I can't remember who it was on here that said we always play VCU well/close. But we get our beat by double digits a LOT, probably more in the losses. This one should be close, unless we get scared. But close doesn't count even tho Mooney would take great pride in it.

Well so far this year we lost at the buzzer to them and then got our asses handed to us. Seems like we are probably now in line for a 10-point loss in a game where we never fall too far behind but never get closer than 6 or 8 points.

For the record, "Mooniocrity" might be one of the best coined phrases in Spider history. Kudos and hats off to whoever won the Spider internet with that one.
Before Gkiller tries to steal this one like he did with Jabba the Hardt, I am going to say that I recall coining this phrase as well. But in all seriousness, if someone else wants to claim I will defer so that SF does not have to do a message board search again :):):)
