6-18

Relax guys.

Don't you know this year is now a HUGE success for our men's basketball program.

Because the Eagles just won the SB.
First of all, Go Birds. Complete and utter domination. I think every other team in the NFL (outside of the Chiefs) would want Hurts as their QB cause all that dude does is win ball games.

But secondly, I got to thinking about Bob Black and Mooney being Philly fans and the cognitive dissonance both display to our MBB.
People talk a lot of bad about Eagles fan (some deserved, some not), but one thing any Philly fan is known for is be passionate and hyper critical of our teams. If we suck (hell, even when we are good and play poorly), Philly fan is gonna be all over the coaching staff, team, etc..

Yet, Bob Black, as a self noted Eagle fan, not only refuses to do that with the Spider men's team but actively goes out of his way to make sure nothing is ever blamed or reflected poorly on our coaching staff and twists himself in pretzels to make excuses about why we suck.

Both are Philly fans in name only. I've never met a tea sipping Philly fan like Mooney either.

Look at who signs his paychecks and there's your answer. It's literally his job to be positive about the program.

Any team employed media that I have heard speak will at least ask difficult questions to the coach after a loss. Bob flatly refuses to ask him anything that is remotely not positive. You listen to his postgame show and you would think we would be 18-6 right now instead of 6-18. It's a joke.

And how can you intellectually do your job and be positive about a program in last place, who just go obliterated by their rival? I'm not asking him to bash Mooney, but just be real for once, Bob Black.

And secondly, we know UR fires no one, so what would really be the consequence if he did come out and call a spade a spade?. Absolutely nothing, maybe other than Hardt and Moondog cutting him out of the buffet lunches and beers at the Tavern.

BB is outstanding at his job. you just don't like his job requirements.

I don't blame Bob. He's not a journalist, he's a communications director.

JOC is fair game, as are whatever other local sports journalists exist. There aren't many, and fewer that care about UR sports.

I don't like the way he does aspects of his job. He is great at calling games, I would like him to do a better job with the coaches show, postgame interviews at asking more insightful/pressing questions of Mooney and others, instead of the typical fluff/positive spin he does ask them.

As an example:

A typical question he would ask postgame goes like this: "we'll lost by 10 tonight but the guys really played well in the first half, tell me why they play so well in the first half".

Instead maybe say: The Spiders really lost momentum in the second half tonight, we really got beaten badly on the glass tonight, what went wrong in the 2nd half to cause that. And what do we need to do moving forward to be better at that?

And anyone who listened to any post games this year know exactly what I am talking about.

He is great at calling games
Not trying to be a hater, but disagree here. Had not listened to him call a game in quite some time - and had the sound up on one of our ESPN+ broadcast for home game. He is over the top homer. I don't thinks sman, that is a job requirement??????? Beck was quite fair and could be critical even at times. Bob was sugar coating, and could see Ungerer starting to be affected. Why could Beck be fair (and no not b/c he was the analyst as opposed to play by play - because BB was inserting his opinion in the play by play)? BB said GREAT DEFENSE on one play, meanwhile the other team zipped the ball around and got a WIDE OPEN shot. No, Bob is not great at his job, his bias makes him unreliable. If you had to listen to his broadcast without the picture u would think we were undefeated.

well ... we disagree. maybe you don't like what he says because he's not critical enough for your taste.
he's a four-time Virginia Sportscaster of the Year ... but what do they know.

he doesn't work for ESPN or CBS. he's an employee of UR and the voice of the Spiders. his job is to promote UR ... not to give you some unbiased take.

every time I listen to road broadcasts I'm thankful we have BB.

Don't know about interviews - rarely listen b/c moon says same things over and over, but I specifically recall him questioning things or calling out bad play etc during games.
agreed. I think BB questions some things in game too. but both play their positive role in interviews.

Please refer to BB by his proper name...Philly Bob.

Philly Bob is broadcaster for life as much or moreso than Mooney is Coach For Life. I'm sure he can call his shot on retirement. We love love love the golden parachute at UR...Hardt, Mooney, more...but at least Philly Bob has earned in. He's a pro. I've rolled my eyes at some things he says, tho then I listen to other pbp guys and I'm like ok we got it good. More shots "spill out" in a game than humanly possible under Bb, but I still admit he knows what he's doing.

But to 97 and 23 point, remember Philly Bob wasn't always a UR employee. Before that he had a media role where you expected more of a critical voice occasionally even when he also handled pbp job. he wasn't. he also never allowed hard ?s from caller texters etc on coaches show, god bless Gary but we'd get Gary then Ivan. Ppl tuned out imo. Yes I realize coaches show is marketing arm of UR bball but it does happen other places, they r call-in show by original design. Think the 1 time he got challenged on own show - it was linked here many years ago - I've never seen Bob Black so flustered, it was when he stumbled & bumbled his way to the 1 in 4 ncaa MINIMUM (btw Bob we're 3 for 19....math)

after he got fired by the radio station (910 AM?) and got full time gig at UR it probably made him even more loyal.

I do agree it's more JOC role to be ask tough questions. JOC has gotten some big UR stories over the years (I guess not too hard bc he's all there is) but personally I think he's traded that inside scoop from UR for asking softball questions. just my theory.

Pretty sure Bob knows that as long as no one questions anything at UR, everything is just fine and dandy. Not the best way to run an athletic department in my opinion but that is the way we chose to run ours.

Yep, we run it like a youth sports organization. And I don't think the guys on this board are crazy fans like Kentucky etc. But we have been subjected to the same ol same ol for so long that it is just insane. No accountability. No questioning the status quo. No disgust when we lose. No nothing but excuses, and it is HARD.
