2017 Schedule

What did you hear was reason why? Don't we still play them in 2019?
For some programs the FBS game is usually a disaster played just for money but I think it's a benefit on a few levels for us to play a FBS team although preferably not a SEC team
The only SEC school we probably schedule is the only private school in the SEC Vanderbilt.

Man, I feel for coach Huesman...absolutely BRUTAL schedule for his first year. But if anyone is up for the task it is him and the group of returners we have coming back. An 8-3 record would be an impressive feat with this schedule.

Always 4 of 8 CAA games at home, but only Howard otherwise.

saw JMU's schedule this morning...defending their CAA and FCS Championship may be easier than it should be...

while the Spiders face a brutal schedule with many very tough away games...the Dukes will play their toughest opponents at the aluminum bowl...their home schedule includes Maine, New Hampshire, Nova and the Spiders on November 11...

on the road Rhode Island, Elon, W&M and Coach Rocco's Blue Hens...are you kidding me?...not much chance of any of these being contenders...

I don't recall the exact methodology the CAA uses for scheduling...this may just be a home/away flip from last season, but it sure looks like an advantage for the Dukes in 2017...

You are correct. We played those 4 teams on the road last season. You're also right that our schedule sets up favorably this year, which after last seasons schedule we're for sure happy about. I always like when you guys come up to JMU late in the season as the CAA is just about always still in play. Hope Hues can come in and roll with you guys, nothing like VA running the CAA (now if only the Nerds could bounce back and we could have the trifecta back)

Have we EVER played a Thursday game before? Been attending Spider games for a very long time, but can''t recall ever playing on Thursday. I assume it's for broadcast reasons......

Let me guess. You absolutely hate it, right?

Out of curiosity when does UR play Tech? I know that's coming up in the next few years. I hope I'm still at Tech when it happens.

Pretty sure Clawson's first game was a Thursday night game at home against UMass. A heartbreaking loss as the offense was just awful. A lot of young guys playing that didn't look ready, but a few of them went on to have huge careers.

I think Clawson's first game was at NC State, but we did play a Thursday or Friday night game against UMass at home.

8 - you're right. I've blocked out the 2004 season. 2005 was the UMass game with Tutt @ WR before Labor Day weekend.

Might I ask how Dillweeds came about? I get Pukes, Barneys, and Womens College, but Dillweeds continues to escape me.
I looked it up for you.
DILLWEED:
Popularized by the Beavis and Butt-head TV series, "dillweed" is a derogatory term used to describe irrational/dumb behavior and low intellectual capacity, usually resulting in some sort of consequence.

Literally, "dillweed" likens someone to pubic hair - "dill" being slang for "penis" (think dill pickle) and "weed" being slang for "hair."
Way to get us arrested, dillweed.

PERFECT.

If my memory is correct, the last game we played as a I-A school was on Thanksgiving morning in 1980. We defeated the Quakers of Penn. UR running back Berry Redden gained over 200 yards rushing.

In 1981 UR, along with several schools, was reclassified I-AA by the NCAA.

Penn game was '81 and reclassified in '82.
You're right. Penn game was in 1981. UR and others moved by NCAA in 1982.

After being reassigned to I-AA, some predicted support for UR football would die out. Fortunately that did not happen.

It took a number of years to get the schedule I-AA.
In 1982 (in which UR went 0-10) the Spiders played a brutal schedule with the likes of West Va, Louisville So Miss. and South Carolina.

That UL team was facing its own problems. They nearly shut the program down. I remember when you would get 2 free tickets with a tank of gas. It wasn't until Howard Schnellenberger took over that UL had any success on the gridiron.

Was it 1983, when we went 3-0 in I-AA and 0-8 in I-A?

Have to ask my dad about that one. 1983 would've been his freshman year. I know they made the playoffs in 1984 and his senior year I'm 1987.

I looked up the '82 schedule. We did not play SoMiss that year. We opened with VaTech.j That year we were winless.

'83, we beat UCF, VMI, JMU but lost to Colgate, W&M & Boston (three teams I would think could have been I-AA at the time). We did go 3-8 on the season, so perhaps your recollection is correct.

has your dad stayed in touch with Bob Blier UR's star QB in the mid 80's?...if so, was Blier really a relative of the Steelers RB Rocky Blier?

those Playoff teams helped get some of the UR alumni and fans disillusioned by the reclassification to I-AA over the change...

Ya Bob usually comes down for the game with the Indians when we have them at home. A bunch of other former players from his team do as well and it's always a good time.

And why is it a chicken coop? Isn't Rockingham County famous for turkey farms?

10/29/87, we played a Thursday night game against BU @ BU and won. It was one of ESPN's Thursday night I-AA series that subsequently turned into the Thursday night FBS game.
