Let's Get This Special Week Started: The Worst Targeting Call Ever!

its just a shame that the CAA did not have the capability to review calls in this 2016 disaster on the Reservation...it was a frustrating day on the Reservation that I have not been able to forget...you may recall we had already lost star QB Kyle Lauletta to injury, but our outstanding 8-2 team was still fighting for a 6-2 CAA finish and higher seed in the FCS Playoffs...

the Spiders were trailing, but game was still in question when the Spiders Justin Rubin put this bone jarring hit on a W&M receiver...the ensuing fumble was returned for a Spiders TD which reversed momentum and put Richmond right back into the game...who knows what might have happened?

until the yellow flag dropped!...a long conference took place...the stripes emerged with the targeting call which reversed the play's outcome and seemed to sap the Spiders spirit! The Indians went on to an easy win!

I still say that call may have cost us a additional home game in the FCS Playoffs in which we advanced to the quarterfinals despite losing Lauletta...let's hope bogus calls like this one don't play a part in this year's important game at The Brick House...once again there's a lot on the line for the Spiders!

never forget!

The Future is Bright

There are a lot of negative emotions over here in basketball land. You are feeling blue and you are thinking about drinking the kool-aid. Don't.
Instead, join us on the Spider Football Board. Over there, the team is on a 9 game winning streak, we are playing W&M (our JMU friends dubbed them as "Waste Management") this weekend. UR is ahead in the series by one game. This could be the first time EVER that a UR football team has won 10 games in a row in a single season.

UR is in the running for a first round bye in the FCS playoffs. Our string of November wins is breath taking. Everything is bright and cheerful (mostly).

Over there, Mojo Spider will post his Prologue later this week. When he does, you will feel better. The sun will shine, the organs will sound and you will believe the Spiders can once again end the Indians' dumpster fire of a season.

Remember, the Future is Brighter as a Spiders' Football Fan.

Future Spider basketball GM nominations?

Clearly, the only thing missing (/s) from our basketball program is recognizing that we need a basketball General Manager. The Bonnies are 4-0 since naming one so obviously their approach works (/s). We could have a job description posted by Monday—ChatGPT could draft it by Monday via

So, who’s your pick and why? I think there are a number of potential candidates who could bring renewed energy and excitement to the program.

Like everyone else, I’m as concerned and frustrated as anyone about how this season has started. While I don’t think naming a GM would magically solve our problems, I do think we need help with some key areas:
  • Active social media presence advocating Spider basketball (since Coach doesn't do social media)
  • Better marketing of the program.
  • Increased awareness and broader participation in building the NIL program
  • Improved scheduling and MTE participation
  • A more engaging Robins Center experience and finding more creating ways to get students to attend games that aren't Dayton or VCU
  • Cohesive recruiting strategies, both for the transfer portal and high school players.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Hampton

this special episode of Spiders Prologue takes place with the back drop of selected highlights from the Spiders dramatic win over Campbell...Coach Huesman mentioned that he was extremely proud of the team for finding a way to win with their backs to the wall...it was a great Richmond win in Buies Creek!

the Spiders overcame adversity and found a way to win when not playing at the top of their game...it may be old school thinking but finding a way to win when you're not at your best is the mark of many Championship teams...

I expect Hampton to be one of the toughest opponents the Spiders will face this season...they may have played the toughest schedule in the CAA...confidence won't be a problem for the Pirates, most of the players on the squad know they can beat us!...remember last year at The Brick House?...there will be no intimidation factor...

with at least a piece of the CAA Championship on the line the pressure will be on the Spiders...we will have to play better on both sides of the ball and special teams to bring back a piece of the CAA Championship!...I expect we will...defend the rush better...pressure and control the QB...eliminate crucial turnovers...prevent big plays on special teams!

our guys seem locked in as the mission to defend the Championship rolls on, I expect we'll return to Westhampton with the booty!...after all the Spiders know how to win in Championship November...now 9-1 in the CAA since November 2021!

enjoy the Prologue!

The Spiders had such great success early in their A-10 years under Ange Bradley, but haven't been able to get back to that level. They've been decent in the A-10, but can't get over the hump and haven't qualified for NCAAs since 2014. This year opened with three tough games against ranked teams in Rutgers, Duke, and JMU, but even since then, they've dropped games against American and Miami of Ohio to fall to 0–5. Hope they can get things figured out...lot of games left in the season.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Hampton

after last season's embarrassing loss to the Pirates in our CAA opener, I'm glad we get them in a late November battle which could have significant CAA Championship and FCS Playoff implications for the Spiders...

no matter what kind of season the Pirates are having, many of their players will bring the confidence of their dominating 2023 win onto the field at Armstrong Stadium...if the Spiders need any additional incentive to stay focused, motivated and winning their memories of getting slam dunked by these guys should be perfect tonic for some important payback!

Richmond has not lost in the three previous meetings at Armstrong Stadium...on CAA Media Day interim head coach Trenton Boykin, who replaced Robert Prunty after spring camp, expressed his believe that this could be the best Hampton team since he arrived as an HU assistant in 2020...he attributes a lot of this to experience...the Pirates bring back a lot, particularly on offense where the sole Pirate on the All CAA Preseason team RB Elijah Burriss will lead the way behind an offensive line that Boykin describes as getting bigger, stronger and faster since last season...

former Richmond linebacker Xavier Marshall will play a significant role in Hampton's defense...

the Pirates were picked to finish 12th in the 16 team conference in the CAA Media Day preseason poll...

payback game, or not, this is a late November road game against an opponent that the Spiders have to defeat...you can't defend a Championship, or earn a Playoff spot, without winning games like this one!

enjoy the Countdown!
