My first time posting on this forum, have been following for a while, but per RTD Buck has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules. Saying this is a shock is the understatement of the century. Anyone have more info on this?!

I don't know who to believe. It seems too much of a coincidence that he was reported to have asked for his release but all of a sudden dismissed.

This is definitely a bad look for the program right now. It has to hurt the recruiting process for the rest of the spring/summer.

Seems a little shady to me. Rumors that he was thinking about leaving, then the school preemptively kicks him out??

Exactly. UR was trotting him out on social media just a few days ago now this? Will be interesting to see how this plays out

Yeah, putting out the highlight tape 2 days ago or whatever it was, if in fact this is a legitimate dismissal, what a horrible idea. Talk about tone deaf as a program. No matter how you slice it, this program is a disaster right now and Mooney is captain of a sinking ship.

The only thing that even makes remote sense to me is some scenario in which Buckingham asked for his release a week or two ago as has been speculated, the school did not give it to him, and then he did something to somehow bad-mouth or tarnish the university in retribution and then they kicked him off the team for that. Because otherwise, if what he did was something farther back, then obviously the school knew about it and most likely knew that he was going to be dismissed.

That sums up my reaction here.

I hope I'm wrong, but anyone else think this isn't the last domino to fall from the roster?

The table is set for another year of excuses. We will be young again having lost so much experience off last years team. We lost our senior guard (KF) and the heart and sole of the team (DB). It was just too much for even Mooney to overcome. We will look great in practice and hope that we can win some games later in the season. Plus, the practice facility will not be ready next year so our facilities are lacking and not helping us land Bryce or quality grad transfers. I can see it now.

Assuming the narrative is true, what do you have to do to be dismissed from the team for a violation of the athletic department rules? I mean, what overarching atheltic department rules are even in place to be violated?

I would think something pretty significant on Buck’s part had to be done for the athletic department to drop the hammer.

Yes, the timing seems very very odd. Buck asks for release. Program keeps it quiet. Then releases his highlights. Then kicks him off the team. Yes, Mooney has managed this roster into the gutter I have to say. Just absolutely no depth or chance for other guys to step in. I have been saying this for several years, every year we need everything to go right, and unproven guys to step up. You can't run a program like this. WOW.

Come on guys. So, now you think something is fishy and there is some kind of conspiracy theory in play here? Buck broke rules you cannot break and got dismissed as a result. He let his team down earlier this year with the one game suspension, and obviously has now one upped that. Why, in an ongoing need to get on Mooney, would anyone give Buck a pass here and even pretend there is more to this?

Pure speculation here - but I wonder if he asked for his release (which was rumored a few weeks ago) and UR either denied or delayed that release. Maybe in the meantime, he went out and started shopping himself to other schools (again - pure speculation) and maybe this is the Athletic Department Policy he broke.

Whatever the reason - doesn't matter, losing Buck makes us very thin, especially at guard. We are back to 12 wins next season.

Well we just lost our two best on ball defenders and what is next? A guy who has
been a team leader and a catalyst for this team, goes down for a violation against
Athletic Dept violations.

Yes, if Buck did something egregious, it is on Buck. But if related to his earlier little one game suspension, Mooney shares some blame.

The big picture is you have to have 9-10 guys that can play on your roster. No, you are not going to be able to replace 1:1 for Buck, but you have to have a roster. Mooney has been terrible with bringing in enough talent the last several years. That is on Mooney. FIRE MOONEY NOW!!!!!!!!

The timing feels like a devious ploy by Moon dog to save his job, what a joke.

12-20 with Fore and Buckingham.

9-23 maybe now with soft OOC.

Closer to 23-9.

G- Jacob, Nick, JJ, and Bryce
F- Grant, Nate, Tomas, and Ford.

Looks like Bryce, Tomas, and Ford just got a little more playing time. They just might surprise a few of you.

I still like this team, and there is still time to add a piece or two.

For athletic department rather than team rule I would think it has to be a reoccurring drug problem, Title IX conviction, or a criminal conviction of some sort. Feel like we would have heard about the latter two through the press. Anything else I would think is just a one to multiple game suspension

I'm usually a pretty optimistic fan and supporter of the program, but even I can't optimistically support a complete turnaround of a 20+ win season when we just lost our two best defenders and guts of the team.

I've seen great strides in the current redshirts, and I know they will contribute, but it seems naive to expect a swing of 20+ wins.

So many negative nellies here. We all agree that last year was just dreadful. But I think too many overlook, that we were playing better at end of season. Indeed, as bad as our record was, we still wound up tied for 5th place in A10. With everyone returning, I felt we had to be better. Now, not everyone is returning, I still have hope that this team will have a decent record this season with some new players getting minutes.

I agree, I would think something pretty serious as well. I could also see it being related to his 1 game suspension (the one game I made it to in Richmond, coincidence?!?!?!). However, I have no inside info.

The conspiracy theorist in me says that the AD is dropping the hammer to lessen the blow back on Mooney who is already a lightning rod in the program. That way Mooney can go to players/fans and say it wasn’t his decision. Obviously that is pure conspiracy speculation and I don’t have any facts to support it.

The other side of the conspiracy theorist in me says the “asking for his release” smoke was a smoke screen for something he got in trouble for, as he was still going to practice (injured at one?), where if he had really asked for a release like Kwan, he wouldn’t be going and forcing Mooney’s hand.

The long and the short of it is without more info being released, all we can do is speculate.

This absolutely has to do with Mooney mishandling the situation. Buck most likely asked for his release, wasn't given it immediately, then proceeded to contact other teams about transferring and UR found out about it. Also anyone who says we will have even remotely a good team next year is just dumb. We are now down to three A10 level players on the roster and absolutely no depth. This situation will likely cause further dominoes to fall such as maybe Sherod, Golden, Gilyard or even all three leaving the program. From what I understand Buck and Nick were somewhat of a package deal and Nick may leave now that Buck is gone. The timing of this is way too odd for it to be a case where Buck violated a drug policy or title 9. This situation isn't gonna end good fellas.

Let's just call it like it is. Buck is not the only guy on this team in the past several years to use drugs. Yet now he's being dismissed from the team at a very suspicious time and in a very convenient way for Mooney.

Yes, agree - I would bet that Gilyard, Golden and Sherod have feelers out.

I don't buy the theory about Buck getting nailed for reaching out to teams though, from stuff I have heard this is common place and you have your AAU guy or other contacts do this.

OK, I thought it was plydogg that said this. I have hears some stuff too, and I am not being judgmental, other than the way the hammer is coming down on DeMonte. Crazy day in the dumpster fire that is now Richmond basketball.

The way this is coming out is going to allow Mooney to not be held accountable for the dumpster fire that is our program right now and that's a shame.

Losing 2 starters in a week looks bad for Mooney. There is no sugar coating it.

Well most programs maybe don't take something like AAU guys reaching out as serious as Richmond. Remember who our coach is and that Richmond is a soft school compared to most.

that scenario puts Buck in the most favorable light.
but it's just speculation. heck it's fabrication at this point unless you've heard otherwise.
