Winning Games Syndrome

I'll take 6-1 any day of the week, but I think these second half swoons have killed some confidence with the board. But here is the good news, we are not clicking yet on all cylinders for all the game. We are having way too many TOs and missing some easy shots that would have stretched the score. We are not playing great like we did in February but we are playing good enough to win. I feel we are close but am waiting for all starters to be in double figures, TOs less than 10 and a double digit win against a strong team. Also when our subs are giving us 10-14 pts off the bench, watchout.

I think part of the thing that has always been challenging to remember is that no team is going to play anything close to a perfect game. I went on the Loyola board last night and you should see what they are saying about Porter as a coach. Every team is going to have stupid turnovers, dry spells and bad shooting stretches. Obviously the best teams limit those.

We are in this place where we expect near perfection because our guys are very experienced and talented, and when we see stretches of that, it's easy to wonder why we don't see it all the time.

I'd rather build a20-point lead in every game and win them all by two as opposed to the alternative. But I also do hope as the season goes on that we can turn those leads into 10-point wins instead.

Oh let's just play every game without any glitches, hiccups, turnovers, bad shots, bad decisions, silly fouls, failures to call needed timeouts, and win going away by 50! Will make life so much easier...............

Yep. And people want a perfect game? This year of all years? Who plays a perfect game under normal conditions? My goodness, some of the comments on here continue to amaze me.

Beat Hofstra. Finish OOC 7-1 (if we don't get another game) and on to the A10. Couldn't really ask for or expect better. Be happy.

But then again, if all we talked about here were hair styles and travelogues, this forum would be a pretty boring place. :)

Teams we have beaten are a combined 7-18 against D1 opponents and zero wins of that have come against Top150 opponents.

Its not just whether you win or lose. Most of us have watched the games. We haven't been as good as I would have hoped. We are struggling from the 3 pt. line, our defense doesn't look nearly as good as last year, we have had absolutely horrid halves for three straight games etc. No we aren't going to be great every minute and win by 40 every game we lead by 20. But the issues we have right now are real and just winning doesn't mean they don't exist. I am not saying we are a bad team, but I don't think we are a Top 25 caliber team right now. Might we work through these things - - - sure we might and I hope we do, but right now we are a decent to good team, but we all hoped for more than that.

Hopeful we would be 9-1 at this stage of the season but then 3 games were cancelled and we are at 6-1...................................

I don't disagree at face value, but the thing is, we are mostly evaluating our team in a vacuum. Watch some of the other fringe top-25 teams and you'll see a lot of the same stuff. There aren't that many truly great teams. We are a top-25 or 35 team, warts and all.

So I guess then as long as we win, we've played a perfect game and there are no concerns or issues that we need to speculate about except hairstyles.

Agree.

I think one point is in winning we need to ask did we play and execute to our potential for any one game. If we did, then great, and then a win is all that matters. On the other hand, if we didn't execute to potential or played in such as way that we had to fend off in order to win (like last night) then I don't think a win is just another peg on our record as the season progresses. We have to be honest of the good & the bad. Yes, the good is we won. Giving up 51 points in the second half and giving up a 20 point lead are not accomplishments that make a great win.

We will just have to "settle" for "bad" wins in that case............................Tarrant often said the obvious - a W is a W..........................

Totally agree Philly. Definitely like a 6-1 record, but the Spiders are going to have to play significantly better if the goal is to win the A-10 regular season as predicted.

The goal of the season is to make the NCAA tournament and get the highest seed possible. Seeding is highly dependent on your NET ranking. One half of the NET is your Net Efficiency which takes into account how efficient you are on offense and defense. When you outscore opponents by 15 to 20 points in a half, most likely your efficiency numbers are going to be pretty good. When you lose most of that lead and give up over 45 points in a half your efficiency numbers will probably go down, significantly. So yes, it is nice to win, but it definitely hurts our seeding in the long run if we continue to blow leads. Add to that the fact that our opponents have an awful record right now, it is a little concerning the way we are playing. If we want to get into the tourney and get a good seed, we need to start playing better.

We are #52 with kenpom, 32 in off efficiency and 63 in def efficiency with a SOS of 49. I like our spot after 7 games.

Its not just whether you win or lose

It is not...just checked ESPN standings and they only have 2 columns W and L

at this point, you are just looking for things to complain about.

UR has not always played the best this year but the bottom line is that they are 6 and 1 with the only loss being to one of the 5 best teams in the country. It’s a lot easier to improve off of 6 and 1 than 3 and 4 for example.

Finding different ways to win games. Remember we are having to relearn having to play without Nick. Despite Tylers overall great play, we still dont have a 3 point fail switch when our offense sputters. We could certainly play better, but we lost to Radford in the NC slate last year and looked worse with this same team essentially. As far as I am concerned NC should be finetuning and making sure you don't step on any bananas with all the covid stuff going on. Get to A10 play where we are all familiar with one another and build the resume from there.

Happy with the win on Friday, but not covering 2.5 was an all time bad beat. Truly soul crushing with a 20 point lead deep into the 2nd half

At the end of the day, the record is the only thing that matters, and as long as a "W" goes down in the book, I'm good.

However, not to difficult to see this team having issues with teams like SLU, Dayton, heck even VCU if they continue to only play 25 minutes of good basketball per game.
