Why we are going to make the NCAAs next year

If we bring everybody back we will be a much better team next year no matter who the coach is. I don't see us making the NCAAs next year though, no matter who the coach is.

I basically agree with this. Except I think if Mooney (or Mooney replacement) was to keep the current group together plus land a stud grad transfer who is a rim protector / enforcer I think that could make us into a tourney team. Without some extra size/defense I think there's no chance.

If the games only lasted 25 minutes or record would have been 21 and 12. We lost a number of very close games to good teams including Georgetown, Davidson and VCU and most recently St. Louis. I felt we were right on the edge of playing consistently well and if we had one or two additional solid players with experience it would have made the difference. Next year almost the whole team is coming back and I expect a lot of them to improve greatly. Just look at how much Golden improved from his true freshman year or Cayo. We are also adding Sherod and Frances.

I understand that their are other young teams in the A10 that might also improve, but they probably will not be adding the quality new players that we will be adding. I also think next year the A10 will have 2 or 3 teams making the NCAAs which will give us multiple shots on goal.
Also, if the rules change and the game becomes like golf where lowest score wins, we are bound to have a great year!

I'm obviously in the same boat as 80sfan. we bring back a lot of talent next year. we add a ton of talent next year. so I believe we can be really good. yes, I believe we can go from what this season was all the way to the dance.

I think we will be substantially better offensively. if Sherod and Francis are so good as to move Woj and Goose to reserve roles as we project, then our starters and bench are both better.

we're probably not going to be a shutdown defense or out rebound teams, but we're young and not very strong so an off season in the weight room will help. we can be better defensively. and we have to do a better job on the defensive boards.

my hope is that either way this coaching decision is over quickly. if we make a change, we'll have a ton to talk about here. if we don't and the board continues the nonstop Mooney talk, I don't know how I can come here for the next 7 months. I don't know how any of you can. don't you ever get tired of posting and reading the same complaints day after day? I know it's important, but man it's a drag.

I think that is a problem. We are losing people because of Mooney. Nobody seems to care!

Optimism is fine. Pragmatism is also ok. Pessimism is a drag. Sadly, there is a lot to be pessimistic about.

I’m not sure we “add a ton of talent,”’that seems hyperbolic. We get back Sherod who helps on O but isn’t great on D. Francis appears to be good on O but we don’t know about his D except he’s not real tall/long. And we get Burton (?) who is a freshman. Gotta stop relying on freshmen to make us better. So one known quantity, one kinda known quantity, and one unknown one.

I’d be surprised we could go from 13 to 24+ wins in a tougher schedule, we don’t have the defense to do it and I don’t know that we’re UNLVs second coming. Maybe we could get it together to win the auto bid but an at large is going to be hard to come by, particularly if we perform OOC anything remotely close to the last three seasons.

I think that’s pragmatism.

God bless you, man. Everyone should have dreams. But for the rest of us who have our eyes open and our feet planted on the ground, we see a coach collecting a paycheck from UR who is inflexible, who cant scheme defense, who can't scheme rebounding, and who coaches in a league where there are a lot of teams who have young rosters. If you think that this coach can suddenly flip a switch and be this awesome coach you've got another thing coming.

We will be better this coming season. I have no doubt about that. If this team stays together, we will have two 4th year juniors a 6th year graduate transfer and go 4 to 5 deep on the bench. I am sure most A-10 teams will also be better, they can’t be much worse.

If we don’t teach and perfect different defenses, then it won’t matter. If we don’t close our -20 rebounds per game deficit, then it won’t matter. If we don’t practice free throws, then it won’t matter.

As we stand now this is not a good shooting team. It has good shooters in practice and warmups, but not under pressure or with consistency. This team needs to be coached to play the other facets of the game. This has obviously not happened for 14 years. I could live with Mooney for 3 more years for monetary reasons if coaches that can teach basketball were added to the staff.

I am tired of being down in the JMU-W&M levels of Virginia basketball. It’s been embarrassing. Hopefully there is a fire lit under somebody’s behind this off season.
