WHY BOB BLACK MUST GO

A quote with about a minute to go, Black suggests: "the level of play of Bucknell is where the Spiders want to be in a year or two." There is a reason that we picked him up when he was fired by a local station, i.e, our commitment to mediocrity. We need to quit kidding ourselves. We need to clean house.

No offense to him personally, but if I were the new AD, I would fire him along with CM. A total yes-man like Black, a nice guy admittedly, has no place in a sport which has any hope of rising above mediocrity. We should require a higher standard of someone in his position, i.e., honesty.

You guys who do not get this, are part of the problem, not the solution, including you, Moderators. You cannot have it both ways. I suspect many of you have known it all along...and despite this, some of you will favor keeping him to the end, which, if not close, will certainly happen within the next few years, i.e., the end of any hope of having a successful program on a national level. If left unchecked, we will soon become a Longwood, a Radford, a UNC Ashville, or a JMU with absolutely no chance of national respectability.
Deal with it.
Life is limited.

Well, you can LOL all you want. But the winning attitude sometimes begins at much lower levels. Black has never considered us a legitimate contender for what we deserve. So you tell me how he serves the furtherance of our program.
I am all ears.

i, I get that you're on a rant, but you specifically brought me into it.

You clearly haven't a clue what's in my head. I don't need to speak for Fan. You have my email. Reach out if you wish.

Look I don't have much knowledge of Bob Black but saw he's been voice of Spider sports since 1983. He was here before CM and probably be here after him. Guy just showing some University of Richmond class being soft with any criticism and thinking like most of us deep down that CM must go. No need to add salt to the wound. Just my outside opinion.

Trust me, not saying I disagree with you. Im just surprised the downfall has reached Bob now.

Honestly, I cant even listen to his homer commentary on the radio anymore, in any capacity (Sports Huddle, bball telecasts, Spider Sportsline). I understand the univ strokes his checks, but he's doing nothing but blowing smoke up our ass.

Agreed the "Bucknell level" statement was a joke. Bob is pretty unaware at times Bucknell is a bottom 150, 5-7 team. We are already at the Bucknell level. We both play 30 games for fun and try to win the last 5 to win a conference tournament. No different than our CAA days.

Never had a problem with Bob in all his years with Spider sports but after reading all of the recent negatives I'm starting to change my opinion. Don't know if this is good or bad but I'm leaning towards bad. I man he is being paid by UR right?

Basketball is not only sport he broadcasts and I would not like to listen to
anyone else doing a game. Now his after game commentary is too soft right
now. We are showing some improvement, but the way Mooney subs especially
his bench does not 75% of the time allow the subs to get in any type of rhythm.

5 OT UR over Blue Hens still my all time favorite Bob Black broadcast.

i, I like your rage. I have succumbed unfortunately. I have given up, and now drink my breakfast and lunch and dream of black and gold horns while I sleep in the afternoon. Don't give up, don't give up. Keep fighting, if everyone gives up like me we will be Radford. We will.

I see no need for a private conversation. Actually, it would be without purpose. What I said needs to aired in public. Sorry.
I am a lifetime committed fan and donor. I love UR. I am a die-hard fan. You have no idea of my commitment to the University or my appreciation of what they did for me.
What I said would be meaningless to discuss in private. We all need to discuss this up front. I have concluded that it's the only way we can make a meaningful change.
No offense to you and Fan1. I appreciate what you both do. However, sometimes I feel like you have your heads buried in the sand.

I guess if you spoke the truth you might lose your job?
That may be true. But what about those who speak their truth and rise to a higher level by so doing?
Whatever, Black's approach is an obstacle to our getting better. I'm sorry if he can't cut it, but it should not be a reason for our continued mediocrity.

Sorry i, but I don't think that an announcer is holding us back.
Well, I do not think that it is just the announcer. However, I think that the announcer is a major part of the problem and the house needs to be cleaned from the basement up.

Baghdad Bob is the least of our worries - he gets paid by the school to talk about the turds we keep laying out there.

I think some of you (hopefully a small percentage) don’t fundamentally get that Bob works for UR in athletics communications. He is a PR/media representative for the university. The day he doesn’t trumpet/defend/spin our athletics programs is the day he gets fired, not the other way around.

Bob isn’t the problem with our basketball program.

By the way, was anyone surprised that we blew the halftime lead tonight? I almost expected it. It’s unfortunate we are to the point where being outscored by 19 in the second half, on our home floor, by Bucknell of the Patriot League is expected. The program is a total mess.

I agree with you iSpider. I love Bob Black and grew up listening to him call all of our away games but if that's true that he said we hope to be at the level of bucknell in a few years, then that is just pathetic. We have been way above that level before and there is no reason we can't be again. This isn't his fault but it kind of sums up a lot of outside people's opinions of our program and also our own administrations feelings about it. That needs to change now. We have seen the success before, granted 7 years ago but we know it can happen and should be there again. We need to make a change at Head coach now. This is only getting worse. There are no positives to this season and anyone who says there have been is just dumb. Let's blow this thing up and start again.

Bob is not going to bite the hand that feeds him. He isn't that stupid.

All I can say is that you haven't a clue on this and I'll leave it at.
Could someone please share the "clues" as to what is going on with our basketball! I hear this kind of statement all the time as if there are monumental behind the scenes secret activities going on but nobody ever shares. And don't give me the "you gotta pay for it" BS. I think it's akin to fake news. If you got something put it out there.....double dog dare ya.

We hear the same things about the government all the time and nothing ever happens. :)

'64 - my simple reply is that i doesn't know my feelings on the situation at all. We've never spoken.

.
Let me get this straight.....Lifelong fans who run a website with little to no financial return and have to put up with incessant bellyaching (Sometimes warranted), personal attacks on other players/coaches, Spider on Spider violence and FRS are part of the problem?

My two cents: I know, like and respect Bob. I also like and respect Chris Mooney. This program is stale, and the staleness extends far and wide. Sometimes changes need to be made simply for the sake of change.

i, I truly enjoy your sense of humor and the wisdom you have added to the board. But you have absolutely no idea how 05 or I feel personally about the situation. I try very hard to remain neutral on the boards, and lean more supportive of the program. Can you imagine how "wild west" in nature this place would be if 05 and I did not try to keep some level of sanity here. If you think I am happy about our current status you can ignore my earlier comment about your wisdom.

Wild West is here my friend, Wild West is here. We are on the prowl. My numbers grow by the hour. We have turned this thing upside down and inside out. There is no going back. By the hour I have new commits. I am leveraging this bandwidth that Fan1 and '05 so graciously provide in a net neutral world, while it is still free.

BOOOOOOO!!!!!

Don't turn around, don't fall asleep. We have arrived.

Is that a suggestion that you fire Bob because he's the victim of having to defend the dreadful state of the bball program? I believe that's pretty close to the definition of shooting the messenger...

Lets think of how different level programs deal with horrible seaons. Programs that accept it at even a low level die a slow death. Once it seems that the fans and alumni dont think having a nationally relative athletic program is not important, the admin follows suit. Successful teams have passionate fanbases, if this is acceptable than we should move to the patriot league.
