Money has stated that next year's starting 5 are the best in U of R history. We all know it takes more than just having good players to win, but I think Mooney has a strong case for those 5 being up there with some of U of R’s top teams. Golden is one of if not the best center in the history of the school and the same could be said for Gilyard at the point guard position. Both Nick and Cayo are very strong forwards in the A10 and we will be adding Blake, who was a mid-major All-American. With that said I think the only 2 guaranteed starters are Grant and Gilyard. The other 3 are a very high probability, But Jake, Andre, Tyler, Koureissi all have a shot depending on how they improve over the next year. It is going to be very exciting to watch.

Starting:

Gilyard
Francis
Sherod or Wojcik
Cayo
Golden

Bench (in no particular order after Sherod or Wojcik):
Sherod or Wojcik
Yates
Burton
Andre
Sal
Grace
Schneider
Verbinskis

We’ll likely go 8 deep consistently with remaining 3 having variable contributions depending on the night

Let’s not fall into this “next year” narrative that Mooney is already trying to spin when we have the majority of this season left to play. We have a lot of great players but history has proven time and again that Mooney fails to meet expectations. These are fantastic players for our new coach to get us back to the NCAAs and winning A10 championships.

Lol. Wonderful timing. Didn't even read this new thread post until after posting in random thoughts thread a few minutes ago. Well UR80, if you read my last RT post, you should know I don't care who is going to start next year, just hope it's better than what other young A10 teams will possess?

I just realized that Mooney is trying to sell:
You go from the team that lost to Longwood to #bestclassever just by swapping Francis in for Wojcik.

I’m typically game for hypotheticals but it’s a bit humiliating we’re already speculating on 2019 before I’ve strung up Christmas lights.

I hope CM reads these posts and takes them as a challenge.
I do not understand how someone could take it otherwise,
and be successful.

Dude, wtf is taking so long with your Christmas lights? Come on.

Who starts next year? Depends on the new coach. Mooney should have a hand in some other teams starting 5. Not UR.

did I miss a quote (and I might have), or is this fake news?
I heard him say next year's junior class might be the best class ever. not the starting 5. there's a big difference.

Well, the 5 he listed are presumably our starters next year. But he did say class. He's careful that way. #bestclassever isn't something that can be proven.

Better question is who will still be on the team next year? It is ridiculous on many levels that this question is being asked less than a third of the way through this season.
This right here.

I don't think we started this thread until February last year, so getting an early start. I remember the conversations about all 5 starters returning, Buck taking a big step forward, Khwan developing his jumper. What other team returns their entire starting 5 next year and how we would easily be a Top 4 A-10 team competing for an NCAA shot.

A-10 ranking just came out this week, we are slotted 12th, with home losses to Longwood and Hampton under our belt and it is not even mid-December.

Groundhog's Day anyone?

Leave it to Mooney to say something that is completely unmeasureable and has no accountability. Also, guess what after next year, the #bestclassever will be seniors, so when we fail next year, he already has his next year argument ready to go.

he said exactly what he meant. the class of Golden, Gilyard, Sherod, Cayo and Francis might be the most talented class ever from top to bottom. don't know why you're choosing that statement to find fault with. you can certainly argue against it if you want. the Geriot, Harper, Smith, Anderson and Hovde class was awesome and they did big things as juniors and seniors. but they don't seem as strong top to bottom. the Zwayer, Skrocki, Brown, Dobbins class was pretty good too. that's as far back as my spreadsheet goes.

Weren't Skrocki, Dobbins the next year?

This is my "go to" site for historical schedules & rosters (all teams not just ours).

How about Newman, Davis, Kratzer, Beckwith, and Rice

Or Woolfolk, Stapleton, Kratzer, Rice and Atkinson.

Or Stevenson, Patrick, Poole, Baker and Brown

Or Shrocki, Scott, Steenberge, Dobbins, Brown.

Or, Mooney’s own Harper, Anderson, Geriot, Brothers and Martel

You can only tell at the end of the season how great the line up was, not will be
Remember when Davis, Nelson Ododo, Allen, etc were our version of the fab 5?

It is not that it is a five-man class. It is who is in it. Sometimes, it is all about timing for non-bcs schools to have special years. Looks like we are set up to have two special years. And, there still might be something special in this year's team.

None of those graduated all in the same year...

Biggest question in this current quagmire of Richmond basketball is what are the odds that class remains together?

Its great that we can talk about the theoretical greatness of a class vs. actually winning and going to NCAA tournaments #thanksMooney

There's so much to be critical of Mooney for (lack of NCAA tournament appearances, transfer / bench / depth issues, unwillingness to be flexible with defensive strategy, etc). A coach talking up the future and potential of his team is not surprising or newsworthy to me. And there's no way Hardt in any way bases his decision next spring on coachspeak this fall.

Oh, they're special. Longwood and Hampton losses at home.

Was that the comment that started this thread?
I think we all agreed he never said that.
we've run out of new material to criticize. but he'll speak again soon.

Unless the poster that started this thread is Mooney.

Here is the quote from Mooney in the newspaper:

Mooney added that he believes the sophomore class of guard Jacob Gilyard, forward Grant Golden and forward Nathan Cayo, plus transfer guard Blake Francis, who’s sitting out this season with two years left, and Sherod, redshirting with two years left, “will be the best class that Richmond’s ever had.”

That is different than what was quoted, and a complete quirk of fate, injuries, transfer, etc. and I hope nothing happens to change that group again in the coming years

Bottom line is we will have as much talent as any team in the A-10 their final 2 years.

Suppose we really pick up the pace and KenPom somewhere around 135 or 140 this year? What sort of incremental improvement should we see next year? Up to 90-100 or so, which would be a very borderline NIT team?
