Chris Mooney has once again shown his strengths as a coach. But even more importantly, he is an even better person. Every time fans scream or yell at him during the game, it takes something away. Both he and his players hear the criticism. He is out there coaching and doing some outstanding things. Our teams show character and that character reflects the character of their coach. Coach Mooney is certainly one of the best coaches of the school. He is well respected by coaches and teams across the country. He and his teams represent the University extremely well.

Yelling at the coaches during a game does nothing positive, and probably makes things worse. Would these people yell at him the same way in public or at Joe's Inn on Mondays? I doubt it. These people are cowards to me. If you want to change the program, do us all a favor and stay away from the RC for a while. You can vote with your wallet.

I sit a few rows behind our bench and heard none of it. And my ears work. No clue what he's talking about, as usual.

I heard plenty of yelling at the refs but none at Mooney. Maybe a loud NO every now and then when DT takes a 3. :)

Tonight I only would have yelled at Mooney if he hadn't gone after those inept refs who were letting ASU maul our guys without repercussion. I thought that he had gotten T'd up at that one point in the game, but I guess it was just a warning? Never quite figured that out.

All I heard was a number of great game Coach as people filed out and he was at the camera being interviewed.

The short black haired ref has been here a few times this year and really seems to be friendly with CM. Most any other official would have T'd him up and bypassed the nice 'warning' there.

Eight, the ref came over right in front of me and said it was a warning. I thought he got T'd up too. I have not seen so many missed traveling calls in a long while. It was poorly officiated all the way around.

Stone and WR- I am happy for the coach and the team that they are on a roll but put your big boy pants on! Fans should be free to critique the Coach! When you make $1.1 mil it goes with the territory! He does do some curious things with his rotations. For instance with the game tied at 30-30 in the first half with 20 seconds to go and the ball and chance to score he has #5 and #11 in the lineup. Those two scored two points the entire game - one played 21 minutes and the other played 39. When they are in there together it is like playing 3 on 5. on offense He also called a timeout at the end of the game in OT after TA made his first free throw- Normally, the opposing coach does that to freeze the shooter but our coach did it. Many of our fans are very astute and my observation is many times the criticism is justified.

Did we win?

Come on 9legs, you can't really be that clueless. He called time out with a 3 point lead with 6.2 seconds left with another shot to come. He wanted his team to know exactly what he wanted them to do with a 3 or 4 point lead because it's a different strategy for each. A great timeout. How do you like the way it turned out? Didn't seem to bother Terry, did it? Come on man.

You're right we do have a lot of astute fans and if you don't know why he called timeout then you're not one of them. jeez.

The announcers seemed like they thought the timeout was a good move. It gave Mooney a chance to calm the team down, give TA a chance to breath and set-up the defense after the goal was made, or not made. Made sense to me.

Only strange thing I saw Mooney do was have all four juniors in the game at the same time with Kendal. It was 5 on 2 on offense and Kendall made a great stop and pop from 12 feet and scored. He still got that line up out of there pretty quick.

Did you listen to his post game comments? He even questioned himself as to whether the TO was the right call. If he questions himself why can't the fans question it? Fortunately, it worked out but it is not beyond discussion

I made a similar post on the VCU Ramnation web site. My point is important. Coach Mooney is an outstanding coach. The criticism that fans hurl towards him during games, including earlier this year and tonight, hurts him and it hurts the team. The invective sent his way towards him and players also hurts the team.

I'm really curious about this. What did you hear tonight? Where to you sit at the games?

one is certainly free to yell most anything he or she wishes during a game but not a good thing for the program. attended some rpi games when they were on their coach and just was so glad, inside, that UR did not do that to their coaches no matter how bad they might have been and some were. no matter what you personally might think about our coach, talk to your buds about it, not like it, but don't go after "our" coach(s) in front of the team, his or her spouse and kids, just not needed and it is a really low thing to do. if it is your pro team, go for it but just use some courtesy. it sounds like some guys were after him earlier in the season but maybe that has cooled some. has nothing to do with big boy pants, it has to do with class.

While I do not happen to agree with StonewallD about Mooney being an "outstanding coach," I do not think yelling at him or harassing him during a game is the thing to do. I must admit though that I have never really heard anything ugly being yelled at the coach. I have heard some complaints and frustrations being versed but no blatant screaming at the coach. Perhaps you could enlighten both Moliva and me with your examples of when this has occurred.

He is just trying to stir the pot. Well played and well coached game. Crowd seemed really into it and supportive.

I have generally supported CM as our coach, where I have had heartburn with him in the past has been his lack of flexibility in terms of making changes and adjusting his "system" to fit our player's abilities, an opponent, or an in-game situation. I still also take the position that if we don't make the NCAA's next season, CM's seat needs to get very warm.

I think he has done a good job this season relative to our strong late season performance, and some of the changes/tweaks he has made to our defense and offensive schemes.

I hope he can continue the trend, we meet and defeat Miami on Tuesday and get to MSG. Winning the NIT would go a very long way towards salvaging the season in my eyes.

The only times I have heard any negativity directed towards CM in games has been when the crowd was yelling for Chu to be put in the game when we were clobbering Davidson and when we were beating SLU. And the negativity in those two instances was pretty mild.

For the record these hashtags made me throw up in my mouth....

for the record, am not all seashells and balloons about our program, want more but don't want drunk or stupid fans yelling stuff at him for all to hear, that is not the atmosphere we want. if you are a mom or dad and with your recruit son in the stands, am sure you would be turned off if someone is telling the coach he is clueless and terrible while at the same time is trying to sell you on why your son should come to UR. be stupid while having a beer before or after the game, say whatever you wish, just don't be stupid in front of others, including recruits and their fams.

Spinner, does that include being stupid here on this board? Because we all know recruits look at stuff like this, and there can be a fair amount of stupidity here at times...

There were plenty of people in Section 4 who were shouting at Mooney. I don't know that I would say they were hurling insults, but it was evident that they were displeased with his decisionmaking. It's been that way with several folks in that section for many years.

And agreed on the freethrow timeout...you have to take one there. All of the naysayers would be flinging poo if he hadn't, TA had missed, and we had no defensive strategy and ASU hit the three ball to tie. Sometimes there's no winning with "fans".

did Terry look iced?
the timeout certainly didn't bother him. some people question EVERY decision, and feel a different decision would always lead to better results.

Regarding the timeout...

VCU v. SFAustin last year contrast that with what our kids did after the timeout last night.

Night and day difference.

We've seen a lot just mind-numbing defensive plays in end game situations the last couple of years in conference and postseason tournaments across the country. There was zero chance our guys were going to do something like that last night. Kudos to coach even if he's diplomatic enough to second guess himself.

While I don't like the freeze on Terry (maybe he said something to help him make the second, maybe he didn't) but I think it was worth the risk to discuss every possible scenario and have us prepared defensively.

Only yelling at CM I heard from Sec 4 or across the aisle in Sec 5 (and since I'm in Sec 4 I can talk) was that they wanted SDJ on the floor more. Obviously a compliment to his importance for our offense. Doubt CM can even hear it and could care less. He's a tough Philly guy so I'm sure he can take it.

Coach also said they kept TA out of the huddle so he would not be involved with what they were saying. Good for confidence, I did wonder how TA was to know what to do, but Coach is a smart man, I'm sure he had that worked out also.

Always wanted to know the answer to this one. Is there a rule that says a player cannot practice his free throw during the timeout? If not, throw him a ball and let him shoot a couple.

Yes, there is a rule. Players must remain in the "bench area", which is defined as follows:

During any timeout or before any extra period, bench personnel and players shall locate themselves inside an imaginary rectangle formed by the boundaries of the sideline (including the bench), end line and an imaginary line extended from the free-throw lane line nearest the bench area meeting an imaginary line extended from the coaching-box line.

CM is a good coach and great representative of our university. Happy to have him and the young men he recruits. The program is sound and for those of you unable to make it tomorrow, you can watch it world-wide on ESPN.

I didn't mind the timeout. We were already up by 3 at that point. It would have been interesting to see whether he would have called it had Terry missed the first one, though. Probably not, since we would not have been fouling then anyway.

But up 3, even if it had "caused" Terry to miss the next one, the worst that could have happened was a tie.

My guess is that he would have called timeout after Terry made the second had he missed the first. But he cold bloodied nailed them both.
