What happened this year?

FWIW, my kid isn't really old enough to know who's winning and losing during the game yet but when I tell him we lost on the way out to the car, he cries. I can relate.
Mo, enjoy the little guy every minute of every day. They turn into grandkids really fast.

Exactly, SpiderGuy. You are only stating the obvious to those who have NO INFLUENCE. If you really care, support our players and coach, and state the obvious to those that can do something about it. I think you missed my point. OSC
So...we're on the same page...good.

The poster above my response seemed to interpret your post the same as I did. Remember we're here because we all want to win & advance the program. Some do not post with flowers, unicorns, and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Everybody does not shake pom poms the same way.

You state we should support the coach through ups & downs. We have all done that. Does that mean we continue to support the coach forever? At some point, a coach has to earn continued support. It just does not go along with a contract & title.

It's a message board, & opinions & facts should be able to be stated freely regardless of influence or not.

My take: CM decided that this is the year a 16 finally beats a 1. So what did he do? Make us look bad during the season with losses (like yesterday's) then get hot and sneak out a couple of 1-point wins in Brooklyn to make the NCAAs and hope the committee gives us a 16 seed. It's all rather genius

Good question. In addition to the contract and money, that's another reason why Mooney isn't going anywhere.

On paper the 2016 class is the best recruiting class of his tenure. We'll have to see what he does with them.
First of all, I don't care what a VCU fan says. Of course they want us to keep Mooney, look how he blew the last 30 seconds of that game this year. I would think that new recruits would want to come to a team going to the NCAA's - not with Mooney and his quest to be average.

I closely watched DT last night. The defense seemed to give him more free space or separation than any other team I've seen this year. Scouting is good and accurate. On top of the missed shots there were tons of wide open shots that he instead passed to a teammate...confidence factor. I feel bad for DT, but the fact of the matter is he can't shoot and defenses have known this for a long time. What's a coach to do?
His play should be limited. Situational substitute.

The loss of JJ and ANO has been devastating this season. I still don't understand a lot of things I have seen or not seen this season.
Looks like ANO saw the writing on the wall and got out of Dodge.

Interestingly enough, though, Alonzo would be accumulating worlds better stats here than he is at Pitt. He averages 10 minutes, 2 pts, 2 rebounds, and 1 block per game. He would be easily doing at least double all of those stats for the Spiders had he remained. I bet we would be faring at least a little bit better also.

They level of influence may be small but everyone has some, no matter how minute, combined with others there's a critical mass you can eventually reach. Plus silence, would simply be looked upon as approval or acceptance. For the first time in a long time I'm home Saturday and considering whether I want to put myself through going to another game?

I totally agree with this post. I find myself in the same place for the same reasons. I'll watch on TV.

Since you have strong feelings another option would be to attend the game and wear a grocery bag with openings for the eyes and mouth over your head. Many pro football fans over the years have employed that technique.

I-M-UR, I'll be looking for you with the bag on your head. Look for me, I'll be the guy with the Chardonnay. OSC

I have to go this Saturday for several reasons. but may skip the Dayton a$$ whipping.

If you have tickets for Saturday's game with UMass don't boycott by not showing up. We need to be full and loud for the recruits in attendance, especially AW.

Just realized we may actually get an "AW" after all this time...

If we are going to lose anyway I think I would rather see us losing while giving our youngsters playing time than continuing to expect some miracle to happen with our seniors. And SDJ should have been rested for at least two games to allow his ankle to mend. He is trying but really can't plant his feet to take that stop and shoot three pointer. I sometimes wonder who makes these decisions. You can bet the player will say "I'm good coach" but Mooney has to see that's not the case and make the tough call. Reminds me of Lindsey and how he was mismanaged (just my opinion based on observation not fact).
SJ shouldn't have even been on the court last night; he was limping in the warm ups, and struggled to get up and down the court. Mooney should have realized the distress he was enduring.

To reply to my own question- how could we play so well at times, at Wake, against Cal, and even our loss to WVU in the beginning and then crumble as the season wore on? All of the posts here, but nothing explains what happened? The team quit playing- why?
I can only think of one answer- CM.

I don't think we quit, I do think are short rotation hurts us more as the season goes on as there is more wear and tear on our main players than teams that run deeper. And last night, not to make excuses, but Shawndre should not have been out there. He was hurt early on. I guess Chris figured we had no choice but SDJ poor game last night was a direct result of playing hobbled, in my opinion.

At least 4 are playing hurt. SDJ ankle, MW ankle, DT back and TJ has finger issues.

Short bench = tired. I think terry is a tremendous player and has been a bright spot but he looks gassed. SDJ obviously needs to rest. I posted elsewhere that we might evaluate the option of taking a higher chance at some losses now and rest guys with the hope we are fresh for the a-10 tournament. Kind of a messy approach but we could get younger guys some needed minutes in addition to resting our key dudes.

Earlier in the season I mentioned the downside of not playing a deeper bench. The early season lessons / game experience to deeper bench players may pay dividends later in the season when the regulars get hurt. Seems we are there now. Could never figure in some of our blowout wins why CM waited until the very end to give deeper bench players a couple slop minutes. Now the lines are that these guys aren't ready. Maybe a bit more of game time would have made them ready???? Then again, the history of how CM uses his bench tells me that there is a pattern to guys sitting pretty much for 4 years.

For those who say these guys aren't ready...well maybe that goes back to supporting the theory advanced that coach is not doing a good enough job of recruiting.

Something or some things are just not working.

Except that the general feeling around the program at the end of last year and heading into this year was that things were trending upward for a team that was in the first four out. I think he thought he could do the grad transfer to showcase things for maybe getting noticed by the NBA. Or he just did not like the way things were going for him personally here, possibly in some form of disagreement with Mooney. He had lost his starting position during last season after all.
