What’s your history with Richmond?

Come out on your porch or step into your parlor and I'll tell you how it all went down:

Richmond College 1976, journalism & history. Lived in Wood Hall as a frosh, Moore Hall as a sophomore, and in Cloisters West junior and senior years, as the on-campus apartments weren't built. Pledged Pi Kappa Alpha sophomore year. Collegian staffer. Intramurals for KMOA as a frosh, then mostly for the Nads as a Pike, as our varsity teams were crazy strong.

One of the few New Yorkers on campus at the time (from the 716). On campus during a period of immense social change (visitation, women to the Refectory, end of the suitcase-college era, etc.) I think the WC class of 1978 really changed the vibe on that side of the lake and I knew more women from that year than my own.

Visited campus as a high school junior in March of 1971 on the advice of my HS guidance counsellor, who went to UVa, and I knew this was the place. Got accepted at some safety schools in Ohio but once my UR acceptance letter arrived, I was going there. Also visited Wake, but never completed the application. Hated my visit to UVa.

Moved to the upper Midwest a month after graduation and to the West Coast in 1984, but I've tried to get back at least every other year for the past decade. I will always be a Spider! My four best friends in life are Pika brothers from the Class of 1978. We have a text chain going almost every day, and always try to meet up for Homecoming. UR bonds are forever.

My younger brother attended UR in 1977-79, played soccer, before leaving school because of injuries.

My son was accepted at UR Law School and loved it, but it was too far from home and he had always wanted to attend the U of Denver, which also had a better financial aid package. So he became a Pioneer rather than a Spider and still works and lives in Denver.

Great thread! Thanks for starting it!

KMOA - I went to high school with the or one of the organizers of KMOA. He and a few others painted KMOA on the roof of our high school when he was a senior (I was a junior). Naturally, they were in a bit of hot water.

James Wood boys from Winchester, friends of mine from first floor Wood Hall. There were lots of JW or Handley kids at UR at that time.

Started UR in 1967, went 3 years full time. Went back later in life and finished my degree in 2010 at the age of 61. Was a Fiji back then , started as a Physics major until Prof. Taylor "encouraged" me to move on. Retired Henrico police officer.....Wife Courtney is also a Spider but got her PHD from W & M. We got married in Cannon Chapel. Loved going to all the games at City Stadium, and beers and clubs sandwiches at Phil's (now Continental). Very passionate Spider for many many years, but now feeling a bit of apathy.

Love all you guys on Spidernation!

Phil's isn't called Phil's, but it's got the same vibe and same great club sandwich. The interior upgrades have improved the place. I still go there every time I'm in Richmond; try to hit Bernie's too.

The neighborhood is now trendy and chic but doesn't seem the same without the Westhampton theatre.

Or the Tempo Room!

I suppose I won’t be seeing Jaws in the same theatre I did 50 years ago.
However being replaced with “Taste” might seem appropriate.

Continental is great. Chicken parm there can feed 3 people. Stuffy’s is great for sandwiches. Used to love going to Nacho Mama’s but the place has closed sadly. Galaxy diner is a nice play too. Took now Mrs. SpiderStudent17, also a UR alum, there for our first date. Used to go to Bubba’s for a haircut. Best haircut to price ratio in town. I think the place has since closed too.
