Why would they even consider it? What is the tie-in with Cleveland or Ohio?

The idea that they would pick Buckeyes seems to be the most absurd to me. Why would you piss off the largest fan base in your own state? What idiot came up with this poll anyway?

This would absolutely suck if they named themselves after the Spiders. Charlotte Bobcats looked into it as well as an expansion franchise. Here’s to hoping they pick the Cleveland Great Lakes Fire or something more relative to their fine city.

We have a trademark on the "Spiders" name related to "Entertainment services, namely conducting athletic events" as well as a couple others covering various pieces of apparel and other products.

On the main one, we claimed a "first use in commerce" date of May 31, 1897...lol.

Didnt we have some legal issue at some point with Marvel and Spider-Man?

Yes, about a decade ago they complained about our mascot named Spidey, for which they've had a trademark since 1975. That's how we ended up with WebstUR.

Also had to fight Spyder ski wear
Yep, that one was about the spider logo. The result was that any time we use it on merchandise, it has to be accompanied by “Richmond” or “UR”...can’t use just the bare spider.

I just hope we don't have the same lawyers that have handled our prior cases. Talk about rolling over. Maybe they graduated from VCU Law. To not be able to buy a hat with just the spider logo on the front (Richmond could be spelled out on back bottom of hat) annoys the crap out of me. So priority #1...new lawyers. And our school needs to be proactive about it not reactive.

Like others I love the uniqueness of our nickname. So I hope it doesn't go that way with Cleveland. But honestly I'm kinda surprised the name hasn't come up more w sports teams, there is a lot you can do with the logo and other marketing. Heck in this link they are already stealing from us....

In this one we get a little shout out and his sentiment is similar to mine....

With apologies to the University of Richmond, "Spiders" is a woefully underused sports team name.

In our favor the early favorite usually doesn't win these things, tho that is purely anecdotal thinking. I look at the options bandied about so far, and maybe its my bias for the name, but I'm like we better watch out cause they're gonna pick the Spiders.

Actually if it does get to that point just make Cleveland pony up the money to fully fund our baseball program. Allow Sean Casey to be the mediator.

10000% this. Spyder didn't even exist when we were using our logo and they spell their name differently. Like what in the actual F were we doing in this case?? We should have come out of there owning the company if anything, not being forced into some terrible requirement the way we were. I hope we got our money back. And I will never buy Spyder gear of any type. To top it all off, they don't have to write Spyder next to their spider. Totally absurd.

For now, I'm going to start a new school called Richmond University and sue UR for name infringement. Later suckers! I'm about to be rich!

I get the incredulousness, but did you not see the debacle with our football program Coaching fiasco? You could argue it’s business as usual.

Remember, the dispute was specifically about the logo, not the name. When did we start using the Spider silhouette logo? UR's trademark applications suggest it might have been 1988.

Spyder filed its first trademark application on a similar logo back in 1979.

That said, I don't recall the exact details on how the dispute played out.

According to tweets I've seen you are going to have an enormous athletic scholarship budget...

I mean, I do. They were really concerned that people were going to get confused between a university that had been using a spider logo and was CALLED THE SPIDERS for like 100 years before their one-man company existed and their ski company that spells its name differently? Like, what in the world? This was worth bringing a lawsuit against a university? Really??

"Oh, sh!t, I meant to buy a pair of Spyder ski pants but I accidentally ended up buying a Richmond Spiders tennis t-shirt from urspidershop.com!"

why hold it against Spyder? they were smart ... and they make great ski wear. I had my kids in Spyder gear for many years. felt I had them representing the Spiders, even if they weren't.
I have a Spyder ski jacket. It is great and everyone thinks it is a UR jacket anyway. It is way more high quality than any branded stuff with UR on it. I call it a win-win.

I'm guessing they trademarked that logo. if the suit didn't have merit, blame the judge. or our lawyers.

Here come the Cleveland Spiders. As I mentioned back in July...book it. Spiders easily best choice out there. Maybe our good friends at Spyder can carry the load & help us out. There may be a few benefits if we get a Cleveland Spiders but I still would like to keep solo.

Nothing wrong with Indians nickname. Absolutely ridiculous they would change it.

That said, Spiders is a great nickname!

They didn't need to change their name just there logo...

To something less offensive

think best if we keep this in relation to the Spiders rather than taking in OT direction. Thanks.

How about the Cleveland Honkies? I'd bet the white guys on the team would just laugh about it and not cry racism. Before the Braves were in Atlanta, they had a minor league team called the Atlanta Crackers. Nobody complained....

How would you feel if they renamed themselves the Cleveland Pigs and used police as a caricature?
