I know we won easily last time at Davidson. However, we need to stay focused only two games left before the tournament. Finish strong. I say we win by 7 however that depends on which Davidson team shows up.

Nice to have Blake in this game too. Davidson is certainly better than they were in early January.

Davidson is a Jekyll and Hyde team. If Jekyll shows up on Tuesday watch out.

A few mentions on here about Davidson playing much better recently but that's not really an achievement. They have proven themselves to be basically a .500 team for the entirety of this season. 15-13 overall, 3-2 on their last 5 games, 6-4 in their last 10 - pick any stretch of the season and you will see a team that wins a few and then loses a few.

I'm not overlooking them because to me there is no doubt they have the talent and coaching to potentially beat us. They have some nice wins this year but also some head scratching losses.

If we come out as focused and sharp as we did against UMass we should handle Davidson tomorrow, and I think we will.

Followed up a win at the Bonnies with a loss at St Joe. That seems to summarize their season...

Did anybody else notice at the end of the game Gilyard run up to take the ball from Wojcik before the shot clock violation? May be looking too far into it but looks like he wanted to be charged with the turnover instead of having Wojcik charged with it. Ran from the other end of the court to make sure he got the ball with about 2 on the shot clock

A couple observations on the game.

Sherod was absolute stones in crunch time. That was fun to watch, but I saw a couple other things of interest.

Golden could do whatever he wanted on offense. It was frustrating to see him only get 22 minutes. I get Mooney wants to keep him fresh, but this game was nip and tuck for about 32 minutes last night and a lot of that time, we had our best player on the bench resting.

I feel this is going to come back and bite us at some point. Mooney has gotten really rigid with Grant substitutions, literally he does not play more than a 3 minute stretch at a time. Is he really not in any better conditioning shape to play more than 20-25 minutes per game. Most games he is such a difference maker on both ends of the court and his subs (Grace and Sal) are clearly a significant step down when he has to go out. Reminds me of Deion Taylor offense-defense substitution of a few years back where Mooney gets it in his head that this is what he has to do, regardless of game situation.

Also, thought Woj played some great minutes. He had a couple man rebounds and really sparked our play. Cayo had a strong game which cut down on Burton's time.

Yep. Grant dominated in the first half. Second half-they doubled him, and instead of trying to force a shot, Grant recognized it, and kicked it out for an open 3. Cayo has come so far since last year- he was great! Finally, Nick who only had one basket in the first half- a layup at the end, got his shot in the second half, and his 4 three's were huge! Blake also made some great shots- nice pull up jumpers. The whole team, starters and bench, gave maximum effort. The icing would have been if Matt had hit one of his three point attempts- they were close, and he played well. Go Spiders!

I've noticed this recently too. I think it has been an effective strategy this season and has gotten Grant a lot of rest to keep him fresh. But we are at the end of the season now, if he's the hot hand then let it ride for a few extra minutes and then swap him out.

We did win the game going away though, so it's hard to argue with how it worked out yesterday too much.

I'm not sure leaving him out there longer would be a benefit. If he is tired, can he really do what he is asked to do every possession? Just watch him on defense. If he's not hedging at the top of the circle, he's busting his butt down low against the opposing big. The guy works his butt off. He has admitted giving him these breaks has been huge. There's no reason to stop doing that now. And, he played fewer minutes last night because of that terrible second foul call against him in the first half.

I could see leaving him out there more in the last 8 minutes in a tight game, since we are down to every game being so important.

last year we complained that Grant wasn't defending ... probably to save himself for the offensive end and to stay out of foul trouble. now we're giving him breaks and his defense is 100% better. and we're winning. but we want to give him less breaks?

In regards to Grant on the bench last night. Wasn’t he in foul trouble pretty early on? I believe there was a stretch where he was called for two fouls in what felt like about 90 seconds, and one of them was an incorrect call. Maybe Mooney got him off the court for foul trouble but also because we have seen before Grant is an “emotional” player and could have possibly picked up a tech or another foul quickly after that. I may be misremembering but when I saw the minutes total I thought the fouls had something to do with it

Yeah. The second foul was a bad call. Grant got 'hooked" by the Davidson player, who went around Grant. That call really got the crowd on the ref. But the crowd was on the refs for some time for failing to call traveling on Davidson on multiple occasions. When they finally did call a travel, it sparked a standing O.

Yup I noticed the crowd go wild when they finally called one. Not calling traveling is one thing but when they call two on us without any on Davidson it gets tough for the crowd

He did pick up two quick ones with just under 5 to play in the first half, and Mooney sat him for the rest of the half.

He's only averaging 25.8 minutes per game this year, so 22 is only a little below that. He played 21 against UMass, although that was obviously a blowout.

The one I noticed on us was Cayo getting called for switching his pivot foot...while dribbling...

Urmite, seems there is a height limit on making the first move and being called for traveling. Anyone over 6’5” is almost always called for traveling when starting a move from a standstill. Maybe the ball takes too long to reach the floor.

Number 35 was pushing off and hooking to get around Grant and then would travel. Number 25 would dribble a little, stop, take two steps before he would pass the ball. Not only the crowd - including me - but also Mooney were visibly agitated. Can't say - tough to believe - because with A-10 refs you never know what you are going to get. The amount of non calls were literally staggering. Number 35 FINALLY got called for traveling which sparked the standing O.....................

One thought on why Grant sits more, is that in case of situation he was in foul trouble, Sal and Matt need the
experience against a variety of competition. I agree there are times that taking Grant out either hurt momentum or
allowed a team to extend lead.

Yes, if it is tied with 3 minutes remaining in the A-10 finals, I want to give him less breaks...:p
