VCU to the Sweet 16, Not.

St. Mary's is really good. They beat Gonzaga, San Diego St, Oral Roberts (another 12 seed), lost to overall number 1 seed Houston by 5, only 1 loss since mid December to a team not named Gonzaga. Can VCU beat them? Yes, but they are not some gift of a match-up for VCU either.
The only thing that helps VCU is they are Top 5 slowest tempo teams, and seem to need to stay that way in order to play well.
If they aren't sped up, then they are incredibly good.

97, I think they are going to be in for a rude awakening. Suspect going into game over-confident. STM patient on offense but play great team D. VCU beat who Pitt and Vandy and looked great against this years weak A10. And I too saw like you said losing to Houston by only 5 holding them to 53 points. Committed 17 TO too.

Correct, St. Mary's played a real schedule and did well on that schedule. VCU played a really bad schedule, which is why despite a 27-7 record they were getting zero at large consideration. St. Mary's is unquestionably the best team they have played all year.

If you watched the BYU / St. Mary's WCC semis game, SMC really struggled against full court pressure, almost blew a 26 point lead. They refused to attack once they had broken the press and the freshmen guard -while a good player - physically wasn't up to the task. When VCU starts their foul every play/dare refs to call it all strategy, it may come down to how the refs call the game. It could easily go VCU's way and I like this matchup a lot for them. Much, much better than facing Duke or Miami in a 12/5 game IMO.
Agree Brooklyn. As most know, I have really touted SMC on this board, because they show that you can be a consistent winner with the right coach and admin - and thinking outside the box (recruit Aussies, big time freshman recruit, etc). But I can definitely see a path where Ace is all over Maheny, and then the next guy steps up, and VCU smothers SMC. I think this game has the potential to be a real low scoring , ugly battle.

Well, yes in comparison to Duke, who would steamroll VCU, St. Mary's is a better match-up. I'm surprised they didn't give VCU and Duke a rematch game in the NCAA.

St. Mary's is quite good no doubt. But as noted it might be a good matchup for VCU and whether SMC can withstand the vcu press. It opened at +5.5 and vcu ML +200 (I banged that hard). Now I'd bet VCU regardless bc I tend to bet against outcomes I don't want to see but 2 for 1 on your $ seemed like great value for VCU too. Noticed it went down to +4 and +155 quickly. NCAA guaranteeing elimination of 1 good mid at least.

All depends on how the fouls are called. Not sure SMC has faced thugs like this before.

It’s a shame that people on this board can’t give credit where credit is due. Mike Rhodes is a class act. Whether his players are under our standards or not, they are clean cut athletes that are not highly talented but are passionate and give it their all. And most importantly, Rhodes can coach their talents and blend them into winners 👏
meanwhile we still got Mooney as our coach :( what do you mean his players are our standards? They're better have been better since I've been on this planet. Remember after they lost to Jacksonville someone made a thread naming it " Downfall of the Rams" lol theyre not going anywhere and will continue to own us. Now in terms of how far they go I think they lose first round. This conference sucked Im not impressed.

I confess to starting that thread and should get some compensation for their turnaround

Tough way for such a smart on-court awareness player to end his career. Or is he allowed to come back?

So they exit out fast last 2 NCAA trips as a 4 seed.
Clark is overrated. He lives off that elite eight play, but is generally a pretty average PG. I think most UVA fans didn't want him to come back this year.

Yep, a couple uva fans I know did not want him back. Solid but unspectacular player imo.
It is funny that when they are TV, the announcers rave on and on about him, when he is like maybe their 4th best player. This UVA team was not very good talent wise, they were made to be greater by their coach and the fact that they played in a very watered down ACC. But UVA in the Big 12 and they probably are a .500 or slightly below conference team. There is a reason the highest ACC seed was a 4 seed.

My first thought was that it looked like the kind of play I've seen in 8/9-year-old basketball games many times when kids panic and just heave it toward someone. Brutal.

The St.Marys v VCU match up is probably the one I am most excited to watch. Two schools that probably have less reasoning than Richmond to be good year after year after year, but they are. Like mid major SDSU, all three have a fan base / admin/ AD/ Coach/ CULTURE of winning. That is what sets them apart from our Spiders. And you do need to put a coach in place for all of that to work.

I, like many on here think this is a game that VCU can and should win. BUT, if the ACE rumors are on this board, I would imagine that could be in the VCU locker room, and in Aces head. So if this is a St. MARYS 14 point win, I think that is why. Still, excited for this game and to watch the winner advance. Crappynof the ncaa to pair them vs each other.

The only other thing that gives me pause is THAT EVERY SINGLE podcast, show, etc is picking VCU in this one. I'm sure we can search internets and find someone , but all the talking heads and gambling shows hammering VCU.

Key-Hay Clark blew it with a turnover.
Yesterday, March 16, 2018, was the 5 year anniversary of UVA's historic loss to UMBC, when a 16 seed upset a 1 seed for the first, and only, time. The Retrievers blew out the Cavaliers 74-54, and it wasn't that close.

I heard Dalen Cuff (ESPN announcer that actually knows the A10 players when he does our games) say that Clark may have the best and worst pass in tourney history. While I am sure there are some equally egregious and glorious passes, it is a good point. Clark was the one that went in the back court and threw the pass ahead in their NCAA championship run.

Kind of reminds me of us against Iowa last year, but the opposite directions. Everybody was picking Iowa. ESPN’s preview of each matchup was one paragraph per team. The Iowa paragraph was first, then the Richmond paragraph was one sentence about us and the rest was all about Iowa.

I have St. Marys winning in my bracket, but my bracket isn't doing too well....

Would be a shame if Baldwin and Deloach both found some nice offers waiting for them from the P5 when they get back to Richmond tonight.
