UVA

I remember when people thought the Chaminade loss was bad...

Mighty Casey has struck out in Hooville. History is made and UVA will forever be known for this night.

Sad thing for Virginia is that people will remember this for a 100 years. You don’t remember who wins these tournaments for more than a few years.

Is this the point of the thread where I'm supposed to insert a discussion about our coach?

J/K, enjoy the postseason!

Tony Bennett sucks. Fire Bennett! Players dogging it on defense, and the offensive strategy is bad! Flying Dutchman doesn't work!
I stand by the assertion that the Flying Dutchman is the worst technique in basketball.

Poor UVA. So much for “defense travels”.

Here is the press conference. UMBC starts at 410, UVA at about the 22 minute mark. The UVA press conference was much more enjoyable. One guy made a smart comment when someone asked if he knew if a 16 ever wondered. The second UVA player started crying when someone asked him about life lessons from the loss.

I actually feel bad for UVA, while simultaneously excited for UMBC. Bennett is a class act and a great coach. In retrospect, maybe we shouldn't be shocked. There was a reason they started the year unranked. He got way more out of that team than anyone expected him to, and losing Hunter at the last minute clearly hurt.

That said, UMBC played like worldbeaters. Truly amazing to watch.

I am amazed that a large number of UVA fans are calling for Bennett to be fired. Apparently, his scheme doesn't win NCAA games, he didn't adjust his scheme to the game, and that his recent recruiting classes have been subpar.
Also it was noted that his ability to recruit top flight talent will be hurt immeasurably.
It sounds like the fire Mooney crowd part duex.

Yea imagine had they had the down year everyone expected. They don’t get a #1 seed for sure. I’m not surprised they lost but surprised it was never a game. Had my jaw out the final 8 minutes because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Feel bad for Bennett, terrible body language from the UVA players. This loss is on them.

Players will get over it....but it will take a long time. The best they can hope for is a 16 winning again next year.

Hmmmm, maybe something to a four guard lineup when the 3's are going through the net................Hoos fans in shock ... and some of this may sound familiar as some Hoos fans are saying.......how could Bennett be so calm after such an awful loss? Disappointment can lead to rancor........................thought Bennett set a great example in the post game presser......................

This is how you play when you have nothing to lose. You play loose, you go for everything, you think outside the box, you don't play scared, you play to "win the game" and not "not trying to lose the game". You have fun. I hope mooney was taking notes.

Lack of scoring caught up with Virginia on the worst possible night for them. With Salt and Wilkins on the floor only three players could score. Hall and Jerome shot them into the ground and Guy never engaged.

The good thing was the crowd at College Park, Md. felt the same way you do Physician and as the game wore on and our possibility for a win improved the crowd became very animated pulling for the Spiders. That game ranks at the top of the Spider games I have attended.

Mine too. Feeling that crowd just completely turn on the Orangemen....what an experience.

I wasn't there for the game but I was in Syracuse the next week for business and wore my red Spider sweatshirt everywhere. Fun, especially in the bars. People where actually very friendly. Even bought me drinks. And many of them were ready to fire their coach.

Since this is a UVA thread, I will give this quick thought. UVA only reached the NCAA final 4 one time in Ralph Sampson’s four years. 1979-1983. Granted the college teams were much better back then, but still he was by far the best player in the country. National player of the year for 3 years. His teammates made the final four the year after he left, so it wasn’t that the supporting cast was terrible. Still amazes me that they didn’t make the final four three years and win it all twice with Ralph.
Sorry the young guys on the board didn’t get to see him play, and with one and done, you will never see anyone like him again.
