George Washington III - Michigan Transfer - Commit

7) Michigan practices weren’t as good as Trap thought
Does he just transfer again and leave UR. I mean - we are 1-3, winless against D1, we play a Double OT game against Bucknell and lose a guard to injury and he still can't see the floor.

Why would a guy - who was a top 100 recruit, went to Michigan for 1 year, and then transferred to UR - stick around much longer? Unless the NIL package he is getting is so good (hard to believe) - then I can't imagine him sticking around past this year.

Why are you sticking around, inquiring minds want to know???

Anyone venture guesses why this guy isn't playing.
1) Double secret disciplinary suspension?
2) Lack of ability?
3) Mooney keeps forgetting to put him in
4) Something even stranger going on behind the scenes?
5) Waiting for his NIL to cash
6) 80s Fan benched him
Mooney may have been a John Jay fan.

we deperately need shooting so I'm up for anything,
but either GW3 isn't healthy, or he's shown in the past 5 months that he's not one of our top 8. otherwise he'd be playing.

If he is not in the rotation based on a few months of practice and you start off looking good and winning, then all good, but when we are playing like this a few games in, if he is healthy, I think we have to give a guy who has a great shooter reputation like that some minutes.

He definitely has some unusual stats. He has one 2 point basket against D1 so far in his career.
3 of 5 from three last season against a “decent” Purdue team,
1 of 13 against all other D1 teams…

if a coaching staff sees a guy 5-6 days a week for 5+ months, I'll assume they know where he stands right now.
I'm not playing him over other guys based on high school rankings.

Not saying because of rankings. I am saying because we kept hearing in the off season he was a great shooter who was making a bunch of 3s. We are 25-96 (26%) from 3 as a team. Our offense looks terrible and we have 3 straight ugly losses. Tyne, Tanner, and White are giving us very little. We are in the meaningless OOC stage right now. I know coaches know their teams way better than we do, but I say give him some minutes and find out.

So, I am no Moon fan, but I will defend him here. You can't just give a guy minutes because the team stinks so far. You earn minutes. If it was really close between him and someone else for the minutes and that person has performed worse in the games than he does in practice, then yes, maybe I'd do this too see if someone was a better "game guy" but if he is sitting because he hasn't learned the offense, doesn't play D or a hundred other reasons that it could be, I cant just play him because he is supposedly a good shooter and my other guys haven't shot well yet. And we have to assume that there are reasons he is buried right now. Coaches just aren't in the habit of burying guys for no reason and players have to earn their way back up the ladder, not just be gifted the minutes basically out of desperation in the moment.

This has really been puzzling. I wish someone would ask Mooney about it directly, but we'll never get that from traditional media in RVA.

I've watched his body language/reactions on the bench, and he's clearly into the game and being a great presence on the sideline, so can't imagine it's attitude/behavior related. My best guess is that he's struggling to adapt to our offensive system or his defense in practice is so bad that Mooney can't play him over Tyne or B. Artis. He's even behind Graham though, which is baffling at this stage.

This is a guy who was the GATORADE POY in Ohio, averaged 24 PPG his senior year, and got into 22 games at Michigan last year. The fact that he isn't getting playing time for what looks like our worst team in the last decade is shocking.

I hear you, and if there are certain reasons that justify 0 minutes, then fine. But, if the attitude is good, and the work ethic in practice is good, let's give him a chance. Another reason why I don't like the decision to redshirt our two freshmen. Let's see what they have as well. Guys get better during the season. Maybe all 3 of these guys in practice look like they aren't ready, but maybe some time now gets them more ready to help us later on this year. I rarely say this about guys not playing and I am always a best players play guy, but we rarely lose 3 straight games to the teams we did. This team and this rotation does not look good at all right now, and too many guys are giving us way too little. Something needs to change.

I see both sides. Obviously, if he is not showing enough in practice to warrant time, he should not be getting time. But at the same time, we suck right now, so trying anything different to me, is a step that needs to be considered.

we've only seen GW3 for a few minutes. to me he looked a bit slow out there compared to Hunt, Tyne and B Artis.

maybee something physical is holding him back from being 100%.

I've noticed GW is the take off your warm up shirt guy even though u haven't been in the game. Always found that a little weird going all the way back to my own hs teammates. It's like they want ppl to think they played, or more likely here, some passive-aggressive reminder to coaching staff. I'm ready to play I'm eager to play don't forget me.

But he's being a good teammate, as Sec9 pointed out I've noticed he's enthuiastic on bench, when he's not and he still has that warm up off without seeing the court that's when we have a bigger issue imo.

Or maybe he's just hot.

Absolutely. I feel everyone should be on the table. You literally have everything to lose if you don’t try something different.

I'm not really going to give the coaching staff any benefits of the doubt at this point as it relates to judging GW3's abilities. They seemed to think the lineup we've been playing is our best rotation, and so far we've gotten embarrassed three times in four games. Maybe they got it wrong and should be playing different guys.
