How do they determine which side of the bracket each team is on? I know that they put the #1, #4, #5 and #8 on one side and the #2, #3, #6 and #7 on the other side, but do not understand how they determine which side of the bracket others fall on. Is it subjective based on geographical location, conference affiliation, etc.? Or are there other considerations?

i there is a list of considerations I have read before, the placings are factored as you suggest. I think they also add whether they have played one another in the past season.

They rank the Top 8 seeds based on merit. The committee will be releasing rankings several times this year. I believe the first release is next week.

The geography comes more into play in the earlier rounds. it's sort of fruitless to project geography on later rounds, particularly if some upsets happen.

As stated above should be released each Thursday starting next week. So that will give us a better idea of the implications of the JMU game just before it happens.

The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee recently recommended the expansion of available charter flights in the first two rounds. That means the Division I Football Championship Committee, which is responsible for playoff selections and seeding, could be less tied to setting matchups based on proximity early in the bracket, said Idaho State athletics director Jeff Tingey, the Big Sky Conference's representative on the committee.

The proposal, which could go into effect for this upcoming season, must still be approved by the NCAA Division I Council when it meets in October.

The policy would come into play should four or more teams from one conference make the 24-team field, giving the selection committee the freedom to spread them out in the bracket. The NCAA would then pay for airfare if necessary when it previously would have required a team to bus to its playoff game.

The prospective change comes as several FCS power conferences – including Montana's home Big Sky – argued that their representatives have been unfairly grouped in recent brackets. The Missouri Valley Football Conference, whose North Dakota State Bison have won the past five FCS national titles, saw all five of its playoff qualifiers land on one side of the bracket in 2015.

I've seen us get Villanova in the 2nd round in one projection and Stony Brook in the one above, would love either of those matchups
