UMASS

13 K0 had 4 fouls that's why he was sitting --- nobody played great, but everyone did just enough

It's a win and that was what we needed. The standings won't reflect how ugly it was. Good finish the last minute, but the rest of the game was pretty awful...just that UMass was worse. DT gives us good defense and some rebounds, but he needs to be told to absolutely not shoot under any condition unless it's a dunk. Allen played well in spurts, but he took too many 8 foot jump hooks...too far from the basket. Oh well, a win is a win! GO SPIDERS!

Good, ugly win on the road, as every game against UMass is. Managed to set the game of basketball back about 20 years. Need to finish strong on sat for Sr day.

5 game win streak - at just the right time. Ugly game but a win and we are playing with confidence.

Yeah we were bad offensively but umass probably had about 4 fg's the entire second half, including meaningless 3 at the buzzer . Our D was tight.

Watched on TV but never did fully understand what took place when TA was awarded two free throws on a technical and he missed both. Was he hit in the face, shaken up, knocked down?
The FT's were uncharacteristic and thought maybe the foul affected him?

13 - TV announcers said he had 3. Didn't know he had 4 until he came back in.

This was our third (or fourth) best win of the season. You'd think we fended off a 200+ RPI team @ home. As Sinbad said in Necessary Roughness, "It's time to parrrrrrrty."

Let's give our guys huge credit, our D won this game. Clutch shots when we needed them and not just from Kendall. Left a lot of shots at the rim and some FTs, but a W is a W. As much as posters on this board lambasted our team and coaches for not pulling out road and other games, how about some shout outs from you "non believers" in this team that they WON!!!!! Proud of this team and sick of the fair weather fans on this board. Go Spiders and me and the "BELIEVERS" in this team will be there on Sat cheering on this team to victory!!!!!!!!! Kendall and Zach deserve a huge "last home game" celebration and send off. We need to be loud and raucous and standing most of the night.

Thanks 97. and Midlo - as the announcers said tonight - it is going to be tough saying goodbye to K Zero on Saturday night. Four years went fast. Gives it his all, all the time.......

Mass. really seemed baffled by the defense. Mass looked like one of the worst teams I've seen in A10 this year...maybe we made then look bad, but I saw no chemistry in Mass or go to guys besides the big guy. Awful shooters.

That may have been our best win of the season. Ugly W? Yes, but largely due to our tremendous defensive effort. In the 2nd half, D was able to neutralize LaLanne with double teams WHILE shutting down the rest of Umass half court O. That was really impressive.

BTW, LaLanne vs no ANO had a huge impact on the game. He was a force on O, yet even more of a presence on D. It really made us apprehensive of what we could do in the paint until late in the game with the TA SLAMMMM and CJ points. IMO, the game isn't close if this mismatch wasn't present. But it was...and we adjusted.

Being able to overcome LaLanne, AND a poor shooting night, on the road, late in the season, was huge. UMASS is a talented ball club, and we did not back down when they physically challenged our guys. Great job by the players, and the coaching/scouting job was tremendous. Big Big W.

Great win! Like the confidence in which they were playing! Thought we looked good.

Great to get a road win vs. a good UMass team!

The ugliness of the game is a glass half full / empty thing. The glass full approach is we achieved a solid win on the road vs. a good team despite poor shooting. If shooting had been on, we would have won by 15.

Very impressed with the way the team has come together -- they are winning the tough games now, which is all we can ask. Great job boys!!!!

Give it a rest man. The kid made three of the best defensive plays you will ever see in a college basketball game during the last five minutes. We all know he's not going to score but the's a warrior. Your same old comments about him everyday get old! Do you think we would have won 5 in a row without him?

Sorry, but we did not look good. UMass just looked worse. That being said, the guys deserve credit for hanging in there. this was one ugly game.

U Mass is a talented team" ?????? "We looked good out there."??????????
What game were you guys watching? This was an awful basketball game played by two teams that played horribly.
Yes we won and that is absolutely the only good thing about this game.

Phi delt. That sounds positive to me. We didn't look good...oh but we won on the road! How many times have we said that ha

winning a crucial game on the road when you don't have your "A" game is the sign of a good team...

its hard to believe how far this team has come since the OOC season and even since the Mason loss...nothing is better than having your favorite team exceed your expectations...they have become one of my favorite Spider teams...the late season run we're on reminds me of the 1991 team...

despite the earlier tough times the guys and coaches never gave up and have made themselves into a formidable A-10 team...hopefully the best is still ahead...

Go Spiders!

The Spider Gang Group Facebook Page

We beat a top 70 rpi team on the road on their senior night. Let's give our guys some more credit. The W is all that matters and we got it.

You stink Mooney. It's not good enough to win 5 in a row. It's not good enough to sweep your cross town rival. It's not good enough to win 2 tough road games in a week. It's not good enough to salvage the season and re-energize the fans. You have to win pretty, and this win was ugly -- therefore unacceptable.

Earth to doofus fans: All good teams play ugly games. Good teams find ways to win the ugly games. We are a good team. Also, thank you Deion Taylor for playing your a$$ off and bringing huge intensity to the defense. You deserve to start, and we will need as many minutes as possible from you for our stretch run.

Go Wildcats.

Shaka sphincter = tight.

Peace out.

if Deion could just be a 70% FT shooter at least he could drive and look for contact anytime he got the ball. as is, he's falling away when near the hoop on jumpers and his 3s are way off.

HOWEVER, he is playing absolutely fantastic defensive basketball. His athleticism is back and tonight he pulled several big boards where he simply outjumped players for the ball. His athleticism and size allow him to guard inside and out. He blocked a guard, guarded wings off the dribble and manned up to cause Lalanne into turnovers on the block. Vital defensive play was what won this game and he was a key part of it.

Additionally, his poise in dealing as an outlet against full court pressure is a great feature (as is with Terry).

Would I like him to contribute on offense? Of course. But until - if ever - his offensive confidence and game returns, I'm okay with him being a defender/rebounder. It's something to deal with but a known factor now, so never a surprise anymore.

Excuse me for stating the obvious but it was A ROAD WIN AGAINST A TEAM TIED WITH US IN CONFERENCE? Ugly? Who cares. We wom
in a game that we had to win. Just stop it! That is all that needs to be said. I will take all of the ugly wins that this team wants to give us. We are in great position heading into the tournament..

I don't think I have ever seen an "ugly" Spider road win!! They are all Rembrandts to me !! :)

Well said, Rivercup. I'm so tired of people who don't appreciate defense and simply WINNING! Who cares if it's by 20 or by 1? I applaud our players and coaches on making the "fair weathers" on this board go quiet. What a sweet, sweet sound . . . oh I heard that pin drop . . .

Concur. A win is a win. We controlled this game the whole way. We didnt let it get away. Ill take four more just like this.

Great win Spiders! Let's have some perspective here, we have turned it around and are playing our best ball at the right time. 6 in a row. 3 road wins in a row, that is reason enough to celebrate. We are playing at the level we thought we could play at. It might be too late to garner an at large bid, but I am so happy we are finally at this point. Bodes well for the rest of this year and into next season.

Big congrats coach Mooney and to the team for persevering through the tough losses and continuing to believe and keep it together.

Didn't watch game but appears it was very ugly from the posts here. I'll take hopefully only 3 more of these ugly ducklings after beating St Louis. Is UR's defense forcing these games into the sloppiness? Always thought CM's defense philosophy had holes in it but something sure is clicking. As bad as the start of the year seemed, nice to be finishing strong. And another road win. Wow!

Important (even though ugly) win

I'd love to see a shot chart, we couldn't hit a 3 footer if we tried.

I hope no one on the selection committee watched this game the A10 would only get one team in the tournament.

Are we that tired? High energy on the boards and defense, but shooting? we threw up more bricks than it took to build the Robins Center.

Spider defense was very disruptive. Quick switches to double their big men and tight around the lane at all times. UR did not get as many steals but forced UMass into 17 turnovers, including several traveling calls and really errant passes that had to be deflating.

I don't understand the complaints about posters using the word ugly to describe the game, Coach Mooney called it an ugly game, the announcers called it ugly, they said UMass makes teams play ugly. That is not a criticism, we won, we're happy. Why are some so sensitive?

I honestly didnt think we would be in this position a month ago. I credit coach Mooney for this teams turnaround. We are now at least competitive on the boards and the way we immediatly double down on the other team's bigs as soon as they catch the ball has negated the advantage opponents used to get by our switching D. We dont allow the other team many easy baskets or open jump shots. I have really enjoyed seeing the team execute down the stretch and finish games out especially on the road. We got another top 100 road win last night. Well done Spiders. GO CATS, beat RPI.
