UMass game

I have to admit Pistol looked pretty uninterested on the bench. Hadn't noticed it before. Can't blame him though.
The big unknowns - What happened, what's going on, will he be back next year? Feel bad for him because besides KF, he seemed to be the next logical & best skilled player at his position. Oh well.

UMass shot 30% from the field. No one has a good chance of winning with that poor of shooting.

Absolutely agree, anybody but UMASS tonight and we lose. We just finally made some 3's. Only bright spot was stopping their Trey Davis for 0-11 from floor and 4 free throws.
Terry Allen didn't reach double digits but there is no one to blame but himself. Tons of missed free throws and a missed layup at the end.

I saw increased intensity on D tonight, first time in awhile. We didn't play great but I'll take the effort. We needed that in January, oh well. Also saw the zone defense being added in more often throughout the game which was a nice change.

UMass Observations:

1 - We went to either a 2-3 or 2-1-2 defense, which our players played SO much better than they have played the match-up zone. If we stick with something like this, it won't take our freshmen until their junior years to please Coach Mooney, and we won't SUCK on defense like we did against Davidson and George Mason. The 30-second-clock has moved our match-up zone out to the land of the dinosaur, in my opinion.

2 - UMass had the worst point guard I have seen this season. Made the victory easier.

3 - Andre Wesson, our top recruit right now from Ohio, was here with his family. He didn't express much emotion during the game, but apparently enjoyed talking with Sherod, our signee. Big thing is that we got him to take a campus visit. I personally think that we are his best choice. He would be a great "get" for us.

4 - Marshall Wood played a little better tonight.

5 - I still can't believe the number of times that our players drive into the lane, then try some insane pass outside instead of just SHOOTING THE F*&^ing BALL!. In some ways, it is still more important to pledge allegiance to the damned offense than it is to score the basketball.

6 - ShawnDre seemed to be hurting a little tonight.

7 - Coach Mooney needs to make an appointment with Morgan Wootten after the season, and ask him how he coached his players to shoot free throws. Then he needs to teach our players THAT WAY. Whatever he is doing nowadays isn't working, for about the FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR. If Chris doesn't take care of these areas in which we NEVER improve, then one day his contract is going to run out and his ass is going to get fired. Enough with the granite-head "I like doing it this way, even though it doesn't work" crap.

8 - Defensive intensity was better tonight. Offensive intensity was better when UMass tried to catch up, instead of being flat and LETTING them catch up or extend a lead like the last two home games. The last two home games before this were collectively an abortion.

9 - Confidence from a win never hurts. Let's see if this can continue. Let's keep everyone healthy and make a run. Go Spiders!

Wasn't pretty, but I will take the win. I thought our D was improved and disrupted UMass. Offense wasn't great but it was good enough. We played a better second half and never let them back in the game which is an improvement. Credit to CM for playing Julius more. I really want Julius to make a shot. Once he sees one go down, I think he will make more shots.

Had a great time at the Robins Center tonight. Good time at the Spide Club pre game event and was able to speak to Monte tonight. He is a bright kid and excited to be a Spider. Also noticed that he is bigger than I thought. I think he will have the strength to make an immediate impact the program.

Nice to finally leave the Robins Center with a win!

Other than Cline, this game was pathetic. It looked like to bad high school teams. I'm shocked at how bad a team we've become

Nice observations Stork. SpiderB, it was a nice evening of events and a big crowd that was involved. Hope Andre and his parents were impressed. I am sure Wesson looked at this team and knows he will have a great chance to play a lot very soon.

Thought the Spiders defended well; loved the zone. We can be a good team if we become a bit more consistent with our shooting and continue switching to the zone defense at times. Good job by Coach Mooney tonight! OSC

We got a win with Wesson, sherod, and buck in the house and next to Kellogg, mooney looks like Einstein. So, a better night than Wednesday
Agreed, Kellog was not impressive. He did let his giant freshman Holloway play the whole second half.

Said on other thread sdj talked about switching between zone and m to m tonight -- said he felt it confused UMass

Marquis Godwin was in the house tonight also -- tall kid

Good win - how often do we outscore the other team in the paint? - something like 28 to 10. Kellog was totally different than his last visit to the Robins Center - much less enthusiasm and intensity - is he on the hot seat?

Out rebounded them too, nothing short of a miracle.

I thought UMass mailed it at about the 5 minute mark left in the game. No fight, no sense of urgency.

I thought a big play early was when terry threw the ball off the backboard got at least 2 offensive rebounds before getting fouled making the putback. Thought that was a statement play by a senior.

TJ played really well again, SDJ is a gamer but you can't tell me his isn't playing a bit hurt right now. I know he denies it but his game his off.

I think not, but only because they have their best recruiting class coming in since the mid 1990s...

Kellogg is a moron and the worst coach in the league. But the UMass athletic director is even stupider, because he extended him after 2014 through 2019 at $1M a year. He is the highest paid state employee in Massachusetts. He should be fired after this season, but it appears they are stuck with him.

That limb snapped.

But we did get an extra helping of meatball in this game.

It's been a long time since I've seen a college player's gut hang over their waistband. I've seen it in football plenty of times. Hardly ever in hoops.

Great for the good guys to get a win. Not to take away from a win, but the Mass. record reflects who they really are. They are a really bad team with 1 really exceptional player. That guy was smooth & could shoot lights out. GMU with the same record as Mass. coming in to RC was a much better team.

No comments about the game as I did not see it.

Wesson actively engaged behind the bench during a timeout is encouraging. This tells us that he is seriously considering UR. Add in the skill, mindset, and investment from Sherod, Buckingham, Godwin, & Golden - you get the feel that something good is on the horizon. It is very positive, credit to whomever is doing the recruiting.

If Wesson joins the group, my sense is that the next set of players good enough to make NCAA appearances (in spite of the coaching) are just around the corner.

"Good job, Coach Mooney"? Ulla, it only took him almost 11 years to realize that perhaps a zone defense might be a good idea every now and then, just to show a different look to the opposition and that maybe, just maybe, there are other defenses out there that might work just as well if not better than his precious match-up zone. Who knows, but after this miraculous epiphany, we may even see more of an emphasis on rebounding and overall rebounding technique.

Careeful, if that happens, a p5 team may come sniffing around.

Hey we have been clamoring for a D change up for years and now we are finally getting it. Maybe a blessing in disguise as it took a poor D and record to force Mooneys hand. It's like they say people don't change unless they are forced to.

Mooney said he was "gun-shy" about changing the D but hopefully he now has seen the light. Lots of questions about the D in the post game presser and Mooney admits there he needs to change it up to keep opposing teams off guard.

To me this is a big breakthrough moment in the Mooney era.

sd, agree 100%. Chris is a very bright guy and an outstanding coach. One drawback is he is a bit hard headed and until now pretty inflexible. IMHO, you are correct; this could be a "breakthrough moment". OSC

Any conjecture as to who is doing the recruiting? How, exactly, do you square these two consecutive statements?

Looks like local alumni have taken over recruiting and done one hell of a job.
