Tyler Burton - Guard not Forward

How many guys have been ‘highly touted’ on this board as freshman and never improve beyond that. Let’s see what happens

Kid had a good UR future ahead. Last year the frosh had to play out of necessity. Burton appears to have earned his time in practice.

Burton getting minutes at crunch time says a lot. He was very impactful in the press the last few minutes. Mooney let’s use this press more, esp. when teams get so comfortable vs. our half court D. They were knocking down threes as if in an empty gym

Tyler Burton - forward not guard

Best comment of night right here. Laughed out loud. Punctuation is important. Thread title should have a ? at end of it. Think we all thought he was a forward. But just interesting that he described himself as a guard & said recruited as guard. His role on this team is to play as athletic forward it’s where we need him. Perhaps as an upperclassman he’ll be a guard if that outside shot develops.

I thought he was terrific. with his hustle plays, found myself unhappy when he wasn't on the floor.

Woj looked great too. tough to get everyone time. when's the last time we had this kind of depth?

Probably going back to senior year for TA/TD/DT. They had decent depth but couldn’t keep it together down the stretch. I do think CM tends to shorten the bench quite a bit after half a dozen games so I’m expecting that again this year.

... and please start using the press with six or seven minutes to go instead of waiting for the three minute mark when we are down by double digits. I have posted that for the past four years - and Chris still waits for three minutes left - we usually lose games like Friday night's game, because the clock runs out. I don't know why Chris is so comfortable being down by 12 at the half or by 12 with six minutes left.

And I am still waiting for us to block out somebody to snare a rebound ... like Will Wade said a couple of years ago - "Richmond waits until the shot is up, then they run toward the basket and jump." Certainly am glad that we "have worked on rebounding really hard this summer."

We will never be a good rebounding team under CM. If anyone thinks this is going to improve I have a variety of bridges/islands/planets available for sale.

Yep, just bad form. We don't box out, we don't crash the boards like other teams do. Often times, we have 1 or 2 guys trying to rebound while the other team has 3 or 4 on the offensive glass.

Opposing coaches know this and know they can make hay on the offense glass as the quote above from Will Wade emphasizes. I don't know if our rebounding philosophy is just not Mooney' system or a product of not being able to coach our players better. I don't really care at this point, it is not going to change, that is all you need to know.

It will cost us several games this year, mark it down.

Stork, was watching the game on ESPN+, we got very lucky to win. I will give the players a lot of credit, and Nick was huge.
BUT, same observations as you. I was watching our defense at the 6 minute mark and we were not showing any urgency, minimal ball pressure. STFU was able to work clock and then beat us off the dribble, and luckily missed some FT's and point blank stick backs. I was watching the thinking what the? I really don't think it is the whole coaching technique thing, it is more of the mind set.

couple thoughts without rewatching ...

on the perimeter: not sure it's fixable. maybe we over-help a little so the recover is a little late. but not all the shots were wide open. just seems that way because they made them. I think a big part of them making them is how small we are out there. watching UVA and Syracuse games, for the most part they're really long. we're not. and we're not going to be. people will shoot over us.

in the inside: again we're small so that hurts. but also Grant's forced to help a lot to challenge shots and when he does he's out of position to rebound. his guy is there to clean up. we don't rotate well to cover that.
also, the benefit of man to man is sometimes stats tell a story. not always but tape would tell. Braxton's a good player and a good athlete, but the guy had 5 offensive rebounds. that's too many. whoever was covering him has to do better there.

and long rebounds are going to happen sometimes. you live with that.

What I perceived, and I haven't gone back to verify if true, is that during their second half blitz they started bringing Grant's guy out for a high ball screen and used that to catalyze the offense by having us scramble to help on it. The thing we could try is to have Grant hedge the screen on the high side to make the dribbler either split it or go around grant, to give us time to cover the dive. Michigan State does this well. Not sure we'd do it that well, but it can't be much worse than what we were doing from 12 minutes to 5 minutes in the second half last game.

s-man, agree with your observations on our guards. Even if they are in position, they don't have the length to bother the shot in many cases. Not much we can do about that. Obviously more frenetic pressure like we saw in the last couple minutes helps - but that is not sustainable for 40 minutes. I wasn't charting things but I did see a lot of drives to the basket.
A 6'3 athletic guard makes a huge difference. So far Gus' offense has not been very good, so you lose a threat when he is out there.

Grant was kind of picking up the ball handler until Gilyard or Francis could recover, but doing so horizontally, instead of a full, perpendicular hedge that makes the ball carrier either split the double team or go back towards mid court to get around Grant. It was more like a temporary switch until the guard recovered. But it allows the ball handler to continue to dribble at the defense or at the three point line, and made for easier passing out of the double team.

Justin Winston with big game in Bonnie's big win vs Rutgers. Bonnie's were recruiting Burton, Winston, and one other stud oir this spot. Winston committed luckily, allowing us to get Burton. This should be a good comp throughout their careers.
Kind of like Gilly vs Fatts. Gilly ahead in that one, though Fatts is pretty good. URI vs UR will be a good one to watch all season. Most prognosticators have us even. URI has a new coach with no real resume coming in vs. Mooney.

I think NCAA appearances will be the ultimate determination in all of the above.

I am quite sure Tyler is in a bad way over this loss. The young lady that passed away actually tweeted about Tyler the day before her passing and Tyler had retweeted that post. So its clear they knew each other. Condolences to Tyler and certainly to Ms. Rett's family, friends coaches and teammates.

Burton's last game was very impressive. He can shoot 3 pointers, grab rebounds, steel the ball, play defense, block shots and do monster dunks. It is only a matter of time until he is starting, which could be later this year, but probably next year. His upside is huge. He is the type of player that MIGHT someday have a chance at being drafted into the NBA.

NBA is a little premature...
But I have been very impressed with his 7 of 8 from 2 and 15 rebounds in 40 minutes the last two games.
What surprises me is that his three look good but he is 6 of 24 for the season...

Not too worried about the NBA just yet - what will be tough for Burton is that his time to be the star is 2 years away, because next year with everyone returning - I would expect his minutes to increase a little, but unless you think he is going to start over Cayo next season (and that is possible) - he likely gets 15-20 minutes a game and is still in a supporting role to Gilyard, Francis, Golden, and Sherod. Cause in 2 years when those guys graduate - we will need Burton to be the star on the team and probably make a big jump in minutes and production.

I could see him starting over Sherrod, or at least taking a chunk of his minutes.

I could see him over Cayo. The last two games he has outplayed Cayo quite honestly. Don’t think Mooney likes the 3 “big” lineup enough to start Burton as a wing

Yes, since Cayo's game at URI and I was even conceding I like him more than most of the guys we recruited, I am leaning back to my stance that we have continued to swing and miss on legit sized/athletic 4 or 5's. And I do like Golden a lot, but we have failed to surround him with some interior size and athleticism. We recruited Cayo as a guard / wing at the time. He has done a good job converting to inside and played solid but low rebounding and not consistent on offense at all. NO DO NOT make Burton an inside guy. To stop with the defeatist attitude, need Burton to continue to develop as a stud wing, and go get a stud grad transfer inside.

Cayo slipping back to the mean after the URI game.

This guy will be a good player for us. This the kind if athlete we have been missing out on to St. Bonny, Rhody, UMass, etc the last 5 years. About time we got one. Loved his aggressiveness and finishing strong.

a gentle reminder that the Rhody kid was suspended and left the team, the Umass kid took a leave of absence and is portal bound and who did we lose to STB?

You are not very smart. I'll give you that. The quoted text indicates that Iwas indeed praising the Burton signing. And oh how Sy and Dana may have flourished at our fine institution and great leader. Try better next time.

They may not have, let's just hope lack of interior depth is not our achilles heal like it was when TJ was a senior.
It may be, but that year we had Cline, Wood, Abakah , Buck
This year we have Golden, Cayo, Sal, Burton & Grace

Which group would you choose on defense?
