Nice video on Griff at richmondspiders.com.

He was sort of written off this year when we added Segers and he's done great job. I'm of the mindset that Griff should keep the job, even if Segers' groin injury ever heals.

Certainly has stepped up to the plate -- his interview shows a true competitor. Lucky to have him. 14 varsity letters in HS is impressive to anyone.

I'd give Segers kickoffs but yes, hard to bench Trau as well as he has done this season.

Give Segers kickoffs and FG's from 45+ (remember uva). Trau's range is just over 40 yds, but he has been money inside of 40 yd. Definitely deserves to keep that role.
Think Rocco has intentionally been very conservative with Seger's allowing injury to heal completely in hopes he is available down the stretch against what was expected to be the tougher competition.

Trau has shown a pretty strong leg on field goals. I'd keep him at least to 45. He hit from 48 I believe already this season and he had room on it.

Kickoffs either need to be higher or longer. Guessing the punter doesn't have the leg either

Excuse me, but I was told that Griffin can kick field goals up to 60 yards. OSC

Excuse me OSC Trau would be kicking off into the end zone if he can hit a 60 yard fg.

Excuse me, but kickoffs are from the 35 yard line which puts the ball down on the 5, not the end zone with a 60 yard ball. We are all fools if we believe that kickers make their own choices on kickoffs. Everything is scripted, just as it is with the offense.

Exactly, Griffin kicks the ball as directed by Coach Rocco. OSC

True, but he still can't get it to the end zone. He is adept at placing the ball where the coaches want, but we have too often failed to defend the placement. Cover execution failure.

Nova does not have an explosive punt or KO return record against weaker competition than they will see tomorrow. Am hopeful that ST will not be a factor against us, but have the same feeling as when Davis or Taylor went to the line - hopeful, but very nervous.

So what is his average kickoff depth and what is the average starting field position for our opponent. If it's better than the 25 yard line something needs to change. If not then I'm fine with the short kickoffs.

2016 FG stats
Trau. 9/10.
3/3. 20-29
4/4. 30-39
2/3. 40-49. Longest being 45, miss from 48 vs towson
Segers 1/1. From 50

Average kickoff - 50.4 yds - last in conference
Touch Backs - Spiders 0 - conference leader JMU - 14
Return Yardage - 691 yds,- 2nd worse in conference
Net yds on defending KOs - 31.2 yds. - last in conference

Yes, we have major weakness here, but would not place most of it on Trau. We have tried to compensate by placement, but coverage has broken down too often. But, as Spider Rick pointed out, if we could consistently put it in the end zone, the discussion would be moot.

In that case, if Segers is healthy let him kick off and let Trau kick field goals. Seems easy to figure so there must be more to it.

Trau had another great day.

On kickoffs we are who we are. We don't have anyone on the roster who can consistently kick it out of the end zone. And even if we spend 5 scholarships on kickers I don't think that will change. With the setting sun, some low angle kicks work just fine. We mixed it up enough today and coverage was pretty solid.

You really think if we had 5 kickers on scholarships none would be able to kick it in the endzone? Yoder had 15 touchbacks last year, and as I have pointed out several times, many lesser schools have guys who constantly kick touchbacks. I love what Trau has done, how many years recently would we have to keep our fingers crossed on extra points?
