Transfer Portal

I thought I read that you don’t get the bonus Covid year if you transfer? Maybe misunderstood that…
You do...tons of guys transferred to use their COVID year. The only difference with transfers was this year where you didn't count against the limit of 13 if you stayed, but you did if you transferred. But now everybody counts toward the 13.

Cameron Healy is transferring again...we were on him last year coming out of Albany, but he landed at Central Michigan. I'm a little confused on his status...he redshirted then played three years at Albany and was a grad transfer to CMU. So a second grad transfer now?

Wofford and Liberty lost a couple more. ODU another too. 672 in portal so far

Klesmit had a bad game against us, but he's a significant loss for Wofford.

Ah yes, that’s what the restriction was. Thanks for clarifying.

Quinn has a Zoom call with Pitt and thinks he's going to arrange a visit there. Says Pitt, Richmond, Penn State, Virginia Tech and Loyola Chicago are recruiting him hardest, so we definitely seem to still be in the mix.

we figured Watson would kill us inside if we didn't collapse on him. so we forced Minaya and Durham to beat us ... and they did.

Minaya who can't shoot and had made 2 of his last 15 3's, hits 2-3 against us in the first half.
and Durham who is even worse, hits 3-4 against us to raise his season percentage to 23.9%.

making those two shoot obviously didn't work.

to compound it ... we shot 1-22.
Going 1-22 makes it impossible to beat almost anyone but if we had that tough, athletic rim protector inside maybe we wouldn’t have had to pay as much attention to Watson and could have pushed them off the 3 point line. Obviously those type of bigs are coveted by all the power 5 teams and difficult to get but someone like Garrett would at least dissuade teams from attacking the basket and going inside out against us.

Hey, we made it farther in the NCAAs than any of those teams! Get it done, Mooney.

If he goes to Pitt, it would seem that his intent was to play in a P5 conference. But Loyola and Richmond are often mentioned so it would not seem to be his MO.

Between the way we use our big men, and Pitt's putrid record and zero signs of improvement over 4 years, would think that would be an easy sell.

Here is Pitt's record under Capel, they did win at UNC, but other than that game they were in slow grinders in which they were getting their brains beat in most of the time

2018–19Pittsburgh14–193–15T–14th
2019–20Pittsburgh16–176–14T–13th
2020–21Pittsburgh10–126–1012th
2021–22Pittsburgh11–216–14T-11th
Pittsburgh:51–69 (.425)21–53 (.284)

Well, if he likes Capel, it seems that Pitt has 15-17 million reasons to keep him:

One complicating factor in a decision on Capel is his buyout. The 47-year-old coach is signed through the 2026-27 season after receiving a two-year extension in January 2020 that was added on to a seven-year contract he signed in March 2018. Should Pitt fire him after this season, it would reportedly owe him between $15 million and $17 million.

One of the dumbest extensions in history. Nowhere to go but up after Stallings went 0–18 in ACC play in his final season. Capel got a 7-year initial deal, "improved" to 3–15 in ACC his first year, and then they rushed to tack on two more years just halfway through his second season.

His buyout reportedly drops to $5 million after next season.

Not sure what happened with Nichols, but transferring out wasn't a surprise. Part-time starter at Providence who couldn't even get off the bench at VCU.

Tsohonis was another transfer who didn't seem to live up to expectations. Double-figure scorer at Washington who ended up with a much-reduced role at VCU.

Brown-Jones showed some potential but was still a bit player. Likely would have seen his role expand next year, so probably the most disappointing loss for them.

Jimmy not playing is more surprising to me, as he was a G Road player a couple yrs above Dji. Great athlete and heck of a player not sure what happened over there bc he can surely play.

Yes if he goes to Pitt, it will be to play ACC competition and big name schools. He will be on a losing team for sure and not make the NCAA there.

That's good. This guy looks like the shooter type we can use. Will be a ton of options out there, but between his proven shooting in a solid league, the appeal to easily work through admissions coming from Ivy league, and the rest of his game (finishing inside, rebounding) this guy is at top of my wish list for shooter at the moment.

Had no idea Tsohonis came from UW and averaged double figures there. He screamed average to me. Brown-Jones is the biggest loss for sure. Young player got better as the year went on, fits VCU's scheme well.

We had a better year than every one of those teams in the end. Get it done, Mooney!
we did, and we're always going to have to compete with good teams for good players. but I hate going up against these same teams. feels like we've continuously lost to Pitt, Loyola Chicao and Va Tech for recruits.

Losing out to Pitt seems like either a win/loss or a loss/loss since their program has been down bad since Jamie Dixon imho. We meet them on the court, we'll get the dub.

Brickus is in the portal. Of course, so is everyone else on the La Salle roster.

Yeah, I mentioned he was a big loss for Wofford.

“Since Wednesday, Klesmit has heard from Wisconsin, Iowa State, Butler, Texas, Georgia Tech, Loyola (IL), Santa Clara, Southern Illinois, UW-Green Bay, and Davidson.”

They’re losing Safford and Godwin too.

Pitt just offered big man twins (6'11 and 7'0) coming out of IMG for the fall. Granted, Pitt has a lot of holes to fill with a bunch of guys transferring out, but it's definitely some competition for Quinn's potential spot.

Can someone please explain to me the current transfer rules? Back to sitting out a year except grad transfers? And what determines how many times you can transfer? Thank you!

You can transfer once as an undergrad without sitting out. Grad transfers also do not need to sit out (needing only a flimsy excuse that the grad program isn't available at your current school).

Gholston tweeted a bit ago that he is committing tomorrow afternoon, but deleted it. Haven't seen any hints about a likely destination or even a short list.
