Toledo 12/11

The players showed a lot of grit coming back from down 19 in the 2nd. Very exciting game, glad I didn't turn it off after the first half.
It was exciting but didn’t need to be. This is the third or fourth home game we dug huge first half holes. Also poor foul shooting last few minutes made the game more “exciting” than it needed to be.

Fun game to watch in 2nd half and really glad we won. We put a hell of a run on them with a barrage of 3s. I give the team credit for a big comeback W. That said, we won't win consistently having to rely on 19 point comebacks. When I hear a 5th year senior say on the post game that the team didn't take it that seriously at the beginning of the game, you know there are leadership issues. Maybe he meant they just didn't have energy, but either way, we have to figure put how to play complete games. Every game from here on is huge. Have to find a way to string a bunch of wins together.

It might be nothing, but even pregame introductions have been noticeably low-energy this year. Guys just walk lazily out, then stand there looking disinterested. Like I said, maybe nothing, but it's different than years past. Given our propensity to start slow too, I've taken note of it.

When you can't hold a 19 point lead. That also has to do with coaching. We caused them to have many turnovers. Shooting 35 percent from the field. And down by 19 points in the start of the second half. You find the winning percentage to be VERY Low. Yes it worked this time. When you face better coaching and teams. They aren't going to let a 19 point lead happen. Mooney continues to preach "Oh they are talented and good team". You can say that about anyone. But having such a lack of focus to start games isn't a good focus. It takes so much energy to recover from such a fate. With 5 year seniors "having a chip on your shoulders". I would define sending a message from the beginning by getting a lead. Then resting the starters. With Mooney "I will figure it out". Next game same thing happens over and over. Once again we almost gave the game away at the foul line. Classic Mooney team missing clutch free throws.....

Would just like to point out that the food service and availability at the robins center was atrocious tonight. Couldn’t get most of the things on the menu at any of the concession stands and service was extremely slow, although it realize they are short staffed. They also don’t have anywhere near the quality of items that they used to either. So Ur doesn’t take sports seriously and apparently don’t take the concessions seriously either. How they hell do you run out of most of your food and the building has as many empty seats as it did tonight?

I got really pissed when they tried to sell me that organic vegan caviar crap rather than my
everyday assortment of Beluga caviar.Must be that supply chain excuse again.I wasn’t born yesterday.

From my vantage point, every time Wilson or Cayo had the ball they were fouled. If the refs had called these fouls, Toledo would have had no players.

Agreed - missing Tyler Hart’s passion for Spider basketball at Robins during pregame. He moved to Houston last year and replacement at least so far doesn’t have the same energy.

I noticed this too. That was then followed by the tip that came right to Jacob but he seemed either unready or disinterested in grabbing it whereas the Toledo guy did. Those individually are minor things but they aren’t isolated.

sure was good to see Nick hitting some shots. Foul shooting though is more an Achilles Heal than rebounding.
Agreed. The first half would’ve been comically bad if Sherod didn’t hit those 3s. Would’ve liked to hear about that too.
I’m too hard on Sherod during the game. He looks slow on defense but in reality he’s more than adequate and makes some big shots often.

This team is clearly better when they press...
Could not agree more. We do not play particularly good half court defense, I’d love to see us press a bit more regularly given we have at least 10 guys who get time each game and probably have a depth advantage against most opponents.

It definitely is something. Been like it all year. Definitely a lack of energy all around at the beginning of games. Maybe part of it is the been there, done that attitude of the super seniors. There is nothing for the crowd to rally around either as the opening fanfare is at an all time low as well

As CM said in the post game, this team really needs the crowd’s energy. Definitely a bunch of breath holding at the beginning of games.

The jump ball showed that Toledo was ready to go “for sure”. How the Spiders didn’t come away with the tip is beyond me as well as the lack of post scoring against a smaller opponent. Maybe the plan was to not do what any bigger team would be expected to do…..

Very happy that the team got the win on a special night for Gilyard. The end of the game was definitely perfect in terms of showing what his steals have meant to the team. Got immediate payback for the banner hanging in the rafters.

CM also said in his post game what lots of posts on this board have said over the years I have been on it. He and the team have the same demeanor, which CM was searching for the word to describe and came up with “calm”. This is exactly the issue - they have no juice. There is hope though - I think the freshmen have some energy especially Marcus Randolph. That kid is hyped up every game.

Go Spiders!

Great post. Well said.

I agree. Hasn't really been good all season. Food choices suck and don't get me started on the beer....

Compared to both Drake and N Iowa our concessions and beer selection are minor league. Plus the lines were insane at halftime.

I didn’t hear the postgame but “calm” shouldn’t be confused for low energy. I actually appreciate that the guys don’t panic but I’d rather them show some fire out of the gate.

We've shown no fire since Mooney was neutered by the administration after "fans" complained about him dropping f-bombs during games years ago. Sometimes you get what you ask for. We (UR) made it clear years ago where our priorities were. As much as I want a change, it's not entirely on Mooney.

Well, you can be fiery without being foul mouthed. But if he was in fact told to cool his approach, then shame on the school and shame on him for not finding another method of motivating the players.

Don't disagree. You can also be supportive without being holier than thou. His whole demeanor changed after that. Now he's "calm" and sips lord knows what from his ever present cup.

SF posted the presser in this thread and “calm” was Mooney’s word not mine. It definitely isn’t the right word. Doesn’t matter what the word is, all I can say is they better find “it” if they want to make it to the NCAAs.

There was a time in the "distant" past where the fans would stand in the Robins Center at the start of the game until Richmond scored our first points. Maybe? someone else could fill in the details. Would start with the jump ball that starts the game. Served to get the crowd into the game. That was long before we had the "crowd monitors/security" that is concerned about someone saying or doing the "wrong thing."

Yes that was quite a drought to start the game .....thankfully it was finally reversed ...........

In the eighties for sure. Had to stand the whole game when we played Navy and David Robinson .
