Toledo 12/11

This is going to be a loooooong week. By Saturday, Plydogg1 will be calling for the murder of Chris Mooney while Plydogg2 will be saying that we've really turned a corner. And Spider23 will have worked us up to a "if we want to be the team we want to be, we should win this game by 472 points".

This has the aura of a trap game. Toledo is decent, Spiders better come to play. Don't look ahead to NC State. Home court might be the deciding factor, but I think this game is far from a sure thing.

Toledo looks solid. It looks like they don’t have any really big wins but their two losses are against 7-3 Oakland and 7-2 Michigan State.

They’ve got a guy Ryan Rollins who is averaging just over 20 points. They hit the glass hard too, which could cause us some trouble.

They’ve played the same number of games as us and have outrebounded us 366 to 278 and offensive boards by a margin of 111 to 61.

I think our guards are going to really outplay theirs, and think this is a game we can and should win. They’re pretty bad from 3, barely shooting 30% for the year. Think we can take advantage of this.

D up and rebound and we win this one by 12. Go Spiders

Box score from our meeting 9 months ago. Rollins, Millner, and Shumate are all main guys we're familiar with.

Jackson grad transferred to Arizona State and Littleson graduated. Replacement starters are Boise transfer Dennis and redshirt frosh Moss.

They definitely rebound it well even though they're not big (tallest regulars Millner and Shumate are 6'7" and 205-210). That said, we actually outrebounded them last season thanks to a double-double from Tyler, Cayo with 6, and Goose with 5 off the bench. Remember Grant and Blake were out for this one.

Every game feels like a trap game to me so far.

silver lining is there are zero trap games left on schedule. when r u underachieving at such a high level the trap game is gone. Win 10 more in a row and we can maybe think about a trap game reappearing.

I feel like each game left in the OOC schedule is a must win at this point, rightly or not. Then I'm hoping for no more than 4 losses in the conference schedule. It makes me feel like there is a ton riding on each and every game with so little room for error/losses. That being said let's go out and win that 3rd game in a row for the honest to God win streak.

Toledo looks to be pretty good. They have beaten some good teams. This will be a challenge for us. They have 4 players who average double figures, with Ryan Rollins as their highest scorer, averaging 20.9 points per game. Surprisingly, we only have 3 averaging double figures.

As suggested before the UNI game, Goose is expected back for the Toledo game. Similar hip issue as Crabtree.

As it turned out, he had hip problems that were causing the groin pain. Surgery was performed on one hip on May 20, with surgery on the second performed on July 1.

“I’m really happy I had it done … Everything on the court feels way better than it did last year. There’s no nagging pain all the time, so nagging that it was hard to concentrate on the simplest things,” Gustavson said Thursday afternoon. “It was restricting me in a lot of ways.”

Glad he is back and healthy...from what I was hearing back in late April one would think he would be out the season. Hips are a tough rehab and tough to come back from as we already know with Connor. Another really good defender to add but will be interesting to see how he is used in the rotation.

Lose many more and WE become the trap game.

I would imagine, Mooney eases him back in, but this does create a log jam at the 2/3, with Wilson, Dji, Connor, Nick, Burton, and now Goose. Some of these guys were already getting not enough minutes, in my opinion. Also, Burton gets as many minutes as he wants out of those 6.

Goose does bring us another plus defender though, which is something of need.

Yeah def agree about Burton. That log jam is difficult to deal with and "should be" good problems if we can somehow figure it out...rotation wise. Like I said before, I think if we can rest Gilly a little more and I really like 2-3 min before some tv timeouts can be beneficial and frees guys up a little more. Gilly eating all 40 mins doesn't help him or us in the long run imo. Call me old school or whatever but the guys that earn mins should be playing the mins not guys based on loyalty. You see it everywhere. Look at UNC, they have two freshman that can absolutely play but aren't bc of loyalty to upperclassman. Then one can argue about what the players are doing in practice...either way the avg fan doesn't know. Back to us...Def would like to see Goose eased in and our rotation be clicking on all cyclinders once A10 play starts. Don't think we would see it...but you could have a whole new 5 come subbed in at once and play like that...I've only been here a short while and I already seem to know that answer. 😃 🕷️🏀

Goose probably will be eased in but if he’s healthy & conditioned I’d play him as much as possible. He immediately becomes our best bench player imo.

if we looking for wing minutes play Sherod at backup 5. I suggested this pre season. His foot speed is mitigated there & probably a wash defensively over anyone else. He can still rebound. & he gets the 3 balls from top of key or facilitates the O.

it would help if he was playing WITH another plus defender. it doesn't help much if he's just taking time FROM another plus defender at the 2 though.

I don't know that Goose gives us any better defense than Zay or Dji. if his offense is ahead of them, great. play him. but if not then I don't know that this helps a whole lot.

Totally agree

True that. It is unfortunate the probably the 3 best defenders on the team, all play the same position. Honestly, I want to see more of Dji right now. I love what Wilson is doing out there as well. So, where does Goose fit in.

I like Spiderdad suggestions of giving Gilyard two or three minutes rest per half and allowing Wilson to run the PG, with Dji or Goose running the 2. Plus Dji and Goose can also handle the rock. I would love to see what our defense would like this with two of those guys on the court at the same time.

I don't think this team will fall apart without Gilly on the court, in fact, I think Gilly getting a few breathers makes him more effective when he is out there, particularly end of game when we need him.

Early in his tenure, Coach Mooney had an entirely different second team, which he called the Posse. When the starters left the court, there was no drop off in talent.

The Posse was most heavily used in 2009–10. Starters were KA, Gonzo, Butler, Harper, and Geriot. Gonzo would come out for a few minutes to get a breather and then come back in to lead The Posse with Brothers, KSmith, Martel and Garrett.

I wouldn't say there was no drop off in talent, but those guys were plenty good and brought a different energy and style that threw opponents off.

If Goose comes back I hope we press more. Man if we had a Darrius Garrett type this would be a completely different team.

So if that is the case, then there are situational minutes and against certain teams or player match-ups that CM needs to find a way to be creative and use 2 or even 3 of the best defenders even if it's perceived that they play the same floor position.

Asking CM to be creative and diverge with his SOP over 17 years is a big ask.

His offense is ahead of Zay

At least at this point, Say, Dji and Andre can all score but - taking a small sample size into consideration - none appear to be great three-point shooters. I like Dji's offensive upside the most but when more than one of them is on the court at the same time we probably need some more reliable three-point shooting in the lineup.

Goose has never been a shooter. and he's been out a long time with double hip surgery. I don't know where his offense is right now.
Wilson shoots 37% from the field (I honestly thought it would be lower before googling it).
Goose shoots nearly 50% and plays much more within his strengths while playing excellent defense. He also helps with rebounds.
I can see Wilson becoming an even better player in the future but I’ll take my chances with Gustavson.

Goose is a driver, not a shooter. He may have been 50% last year, but it was 65% on twos (mostly layups) and 32% on threes.
And like 4.4ppg if I read that correctly. 50% isn’t moving the needle if he barely registers any shots.
