Things could be worse

I don't think Martelli should be our first choice by any means, but I think motivation would be there on his side to get back to NCAA tourney and show St. Joes they made a mistake. Would all depend on the staff he surrounds himself with - even possibly, if he is successful, having his successor on staff could help. Not saying his son comes to UR either, although that is a possibilty - just pointing out that with his son on staff at VCU, they could see each other more than being in Michigan.

Again - out of left field, not first option, but I just don't think UR is seen as a great landing spot and we might need to settle for option 5, 6, or 7.

I guess the other thing to consider as well - who would we be competing against? What other jobs might be open at the end of the year that coaches might consider as well.

You look at the hot seat lists out there and I see schools like the following

Pitt
Georgia
Kansas State
Arizona State
Butler
NC State

From a pure money perspective - all those places pay much more than UR would be willing to pay. And all of them from bigger conferences as well. So right off the bat - I feel it could be difficult and therefore - we may need a long list. Unless - we think we hire one of these newly "fired" coaches.

Butler is only paying Jordan $700k a year, according to their message board. The others probably will pay more than us, though, you're right.

Agreed - but Jordan only had 1 year experience prior to that. And when Butler was successful under Brad Stevens many years ago - they were paying him 1.2 million at the end. So I think Butler may have learned their lesson - cheaper is not always better and I expect them to pull out the checkbook on the next hire if they are serious.

May I suggest someone who has been in their position longer than Mooney and may want a change...

Jim Boeheim
Mike Krzyzewski
Tom Izzo
Mark Few
Jay Wright
Bill Self

Well of course, but working on the assumption that we are hiring a new coach, Martelli wouldn’t be my first choice.

I would think Georgetown would be looking too, or are they in the same boat we are?

and they're right. nothing happens if it's just an argument. you don't get to swing at someone, which escalated everything and could have gotten really bad. the coach is supposed to be the adult.
Agreed. There was an awful lot of both sides at fault going on here. I still don't know what Gard did wrong. He called a timeout because Michigan was still pressing he then tried to explain that to Howard in the handshake line and Howard went ballistic. Sad thing was Howard got two of his kids suspended a game and a Wisconsin kid as well because he couldn't be a grown up in the handshake line.

It would be interesting to know who brought the others mother in first.

Out of left field - but any chance you think Martelli would be interested in coming to Richmond if Mooney is let go?

He is older - 67. So not a long term option, but maybe someone for 5 years to get us back on solid footing after the super seniors leave and Mooney is theoretically let go.

Plus - you might be able to get him a little cheaper as he is probably not in it for money at this point. He makes 450K at Michigan right now. I think you offer 800K - maybe he is interested, not only to get back to head coach, but also gives him a shot to play St. Joes as I always felt that relationship ended badly and I wonder if he would like a shot to get back at them. And I think his son is on the staff at VCU - so family connection in town might tug him this way.
I agree with your first point, this is from the warning track in left filed

Georgetown standing behind Ewing and his winless Big East season. Two more chances to get in the W column!
