You all know what I am talking about. That "non-fumble"call deserves its own thread. For those in attendance and not at the game, did we miss something? It was clear as day that was a fumble in the stadium.

Are these officials siblings of A10 officials? WTH?!

I couldn't be at this game, but it was clear on TV. The announcers were dumbfounded. I cannot conceive how the review crew could make such a mistake. I can understand how such a mistake can be made in real time, but someone really needs to look into what is going on in the review booth in CAA games. I have never complained about officiating, but this was ridiculous. I hope the league will come out with an explanation or apology this week.

The CAA refereeing this year has been embarassingly bad. I feel bad for the players -They deserve better.

The ONLY explanation I can think of is that while they saw the fumble on replay, they couldn't tell conclusively who recovered it and so they stuck with the ruling on the field. I know our guy came out holding the ball, but that obviously wasn't conclusive in their minds. It seemed like an awful call for sure.

Yeah, that was weird. Only thing I thought at the time was that our guy waltzed in late and just picked the ball out of the scrum. Assuming the refs had already made a call and the Villanova player just let it go.

Matt smith reported that the ref told coach rocco that they couldn't conclusively say who recovered it....bad initial call and lack of awareness made it impossible to overturn

Anyone else notice that on all the challenges there was never a conclusive angle. Is that because of our NCAA level and lack of TV cameras or just bad luck?

Those refs must have had an early evening flight to catch last night. The clock couldn't move fast enough for them. Some strange spots as well.

I disagree the Nova fumble (that was overruled) was a fumble it was easy to see live, it was easy to see on the video, Nova had already put their defense on the field. Couldn't tell who recovered it......moronic.

hate review, so frustrating for the game to be delayed while they might get it right some time. especially baseball, review is just stupid, part of the game, always, has been officials, umps, missing one once in a while, just like coaches do, just like players do. now we delay games, sometimes for 5 minutes just to still get it wrong. replay is wonderful, review, just dump it.

I think the problem was everyone (at least on the east side) knew it was a fumble except for the officials. They didn't realize it was a fumble, therefore they weren't paying attention who had it at the end of the play. We almost didn't even get a replay in, I think the officials saw the stadium replay just before Nova was getting ready to snap the ball. Until that time they had no idea that the ball had even been fumbled (which in itself was ridiculous because the ball carrier was actually standing straight up when the ball came out)

It wasn’t just an awful call: It was a wrong call that should have been easily overturned on review.

The ruling on the field was that it was not a fumble because the player was down by contact. That was what was announced by the officials. Therefore, the only ruling for the review crew should have been whether the player was down when he fumbled, and it was blatantly obvious (at least on the TV and the replays) that the fumble occurred when the runner was still standing straight up as stated by SpiderRick. So it was a fumble.

I don't get how the officials could have waived off a fumble and not known who had recovered it. They were standing right there. The field officials made a mistake in missing the call as to whether the player was down, which I can understand, that’s the reason we have review, but I think the review crew blew it because they apparently reviewed an issue other the one announced on the field or made a determination that the play on the field stood because they couldn’t tell who had the ball which is not an issue for them to review.

Coach Rocco commented on it briefly on TV. It will be interesting to hear a fuller explanation from him on Tuesday.

BTW, the TV coverage was great. It was the CAA game of the week, I think, and there were good camera angles for the game and the replays. I caught a little of the JMU/UNH game earlier and this broadcast was a league above.

This is exactly right. The referee announced that Richmond was challenging the "down by contact ruling" and there's no way that could have stood on review. So clearly, the replay officials were reviewing something else. As Rocco said on the halftime interview, "everyone in the stadium knew we recovered the fumble."

This was all compounded when on our next possession, our TE fumbled and an official clearly blew the play dead while the live ball was bouncing down the field. Was it a fumble? Of course. But once that whistle blows it's Richmond ball at the spot of the fumble.
