Tanner Thomas - 2025 Transfer Visit

Watched his highlights online and seems like a good fit. Glad that we’re going after players more willing to drive to the basket and play physically, while still having a good 3 point shooting percentage. Also, he would definitely be at the 3 and Johnston would be at the 2, and so we’ll have a taller starting line-up than normal. Curious if he commits, whether we’ll see anyone else transferring out of our team.

hard to know what to really expect for guys transferring up from these really low-major programs. The MAAC was only ranked better than five other conferences last season with an average NET rating of 267 in conference but hopefully him being on the all-conference team is a good sign at least if he comes here.
Yep, I like the production at D1 level. Good 3P %. Foot speed? The highlights don't show too much ability to go by. But highlights are hard to tell a lot. But yes, good size at the wing - but not seeing Dji or Bigs type of foot speed.

I'm on record that I don't like any of our wing players, so I would be all on board with landing Thomas, he is a proven D-1 player. If he commits, he would likely be our starter at the 3. The less Tanner and AP we see next year the better.

However, if I'm McGlothin or Robinson, I have to wonder what does this mean for me. Both of these guys redshirted last year and in essence lost the opportunity to show what they could do at this level and now might be buried in the depth chart by two players who have already shown what they can do on a college court.

I don’t know, hopefully it pushes them to work even harder. In this new era of nil, nothing is given and handed out now. Nobody’s job or spot is safe anymore, if they want to get pt, they have to work for it and show out in practice. I think bringing in talent is good and it should make everybody work even harder.

I feel like Bryson is boom or bust. Loved his highlights. Did he get adjusted to the culture of comfort - and also is lateral foot speed an issue. If both answers are no, I think that is our starting wing. If either answer is yes, well....

Robinson is a stud athelete. He I feel like he can impact the game in many ways. Hopefully shot a billion jump shots and got a go to move in the post a la Cayo.

I think the hope that many of us have that McGlothin and Robinson will go from redshirting their first season to playing meaningful minutes is probably not realistic. If they get no playing time, then I think that is not a good sign for the level of contribution they'll have the following years, but if they can each contribute 5-10 minutes a game this season then I think there is more optimism that the following season they can be starters or 6th-7th guys off the bench. In doing so, will cut into Tanner & AP playing time. I think the ceiling is higher for both McGlothin and Robinson than Tanner & AP but that is going off a feeling and not anything proven on court. If we can take a player who can contribute now, we do so. It also helps our younger guys to practice against older, stronger, more experienced college players too.

I like Robinson a lot, he is all over the floor and hopefully he gets pt this year. We needed his athletism and enegry badly this past season.

Both Thomas and Daughtry are juniors though, so are they good with playing back-up minutes for the next 2 years? I do agree just based on what I saw the ceiling is higher on them than it is on Tanner and AP. Which leads to another question is do they jump Tanner and AP on the depth chart this year?

I imagine Robinson at 3 and McGlothin at 4. Since I haven’t seen any of these guys play for UR, it’s pure speculation at this point but I think Robinson can jump Thomas on depth chart. Not sure with Tanner at this point. McGlothin, I doubt will be ahead of Daughtry but at that point AP will have graduated and McGlothin can get compete for solid back up minutes as a redshirt sophomore which is pretty solid. Competition is a good thing and we want the best players playing. If it doesn’t pan out, they may want to explore other options elsewhere like many of our former players have. That’s the nature of the game, although it doesn’t exactly make me confident in this staff’s ability to recruit high school talent when we haven’t had many high school recruits play meaningful minutes here over the years.

yeah but do we trust Moonie to identify who the best players are if he has too many options to choose from.

I feel like this portal era stunts the growth of all high school recruits. You used to have to live with the ups and downs of freshmen. Today you plug in a transfer and keep the freshman on the bench.

I bet not all of our superstar freshman class from 2017 (?) would get early time if the portal was then like it is today. Some would have still developed, but others might have wasted away on the bench and eventually transferred out.

In our case though, Mooney has repeatedly expressed his desire of maintaining and developing high school recruits as a priority. If that’s the case and these high school recruits still aren’t getting playing time over the transfers, then it’s a testament to poor ability from the staff to recruit talented enough high school players at the A10 level. Now, it shouldn’t come to a surprise that freshman won’t play much, though it’d be nice to have a freshman starter/contributor every now and then, but if by year 3 they aren’t contributing much, then it’s an issue. In Robinson/McGlothin case, I don’t expect a big jump from redshirting to meaningful contributor this year but at least trend in that direction to set up a more impactful year 3 for them. If we don’t see that growth, I wouldn’t be surprised if they transfer the following year.

Coming out of HS, it definitely seemed McGlothin had wing skills, whereas Robinson was a physical attack the rim type of power forward. I know McGlothin has a couple inches on Robinson, but he definitely seemed like he was more comfortable with the ball facing the basket.

having never seen anything but their body type & highlights...that was my impression too. if we are defining positions beyond guard/forward (I know that can be triggering on here!) I'd flip flop those 2. McGlothin at 3 and Robinson at 4.

I'm a little surprised we are not relying on the #nextbestclass. I've made light of that but tbh I was kinda looking fwd to it.

Because I felt it was our best path forward to have a consistently good program. It meant 3 out of the 5 had to be really good which we've been trending far away from, but I almost felt like Moon and the Spiders were due. Now I feel differently, less optimistic. I think 2 of 3 true frosh will redshirt, and I feel like Bryson and JRob r getting a little blocked. Now...maybe they aren't good enough in which case we need them blocked but the plan was for them to be really good. we need way more incoming young recruits to be good. Now I saw a couple transfers in of course but I originally expected a little more reliance on those 5. Raises some concerns. maybe we r recruiting on hey take a redshirt, get 5 years, get 1 extra year of rev share/NIL, except it probably won't be here. Don't like that strategery if that's what we're promoting

1 benefit is maybe it ups the pressure on Mooney. I thought going really young next season he could just show some promise with the #nextbestclass and that's all he neeeded. Of course maybe is the real operative world. when is he ever under pressure. Once? and then we were like so sorry Moon we'll make up for it but giving you another extension 2 years later for going 0-1 in the NIT over 2 seasons.

The NIL era actually helps Mooney, especially considering that we won the regular season last year. Even though we immediately regressed into complete ineptitude, Mooney and all his handlers can say "Eh, we just missed on the portal guys this year, but look at what we did in the portal last year!" That excuse will be good for at least two more years. It's the "Hey, we're only one good portal class away from doing what we did in 23-24!" excuse.

EL, I do honestly believe that NIL does provide a big smoke screen for Moon. Not that he needs it b/c our admin doesn't care. But he can point out to all the other mid majors being absolutely ransacked, and the Ivy and everyone below power conference. UCSD was one of the best mid major stories all year, coach left and players left for $. So moon actually kind of lucked out. But we know Hardt is on board because we will have to be SENSIBLE. So triumvirate had little meeting. PQ and 80's asked: "Say Chris, how much would it take to get some real high level players?" Chris said X (700K, 2 Mill, whatever) and PQ and 80s coughed, nudged Hardt. Hardt was startled awake, and they repeated the scene. They all agreed let's go with the stated HS route, and plan to be sensible in the portal.

Yes, I was at a nearby table.
