Take Aways from VCU LOSS

I think muscle coach can continue to help ha FT percent in offseason.just a joke. But real thought is maybe Coach Mooney is not free throw problem ,i think fine motor control is being lost in weight room every year.

Why I sent that question to Sportsline after Davidson game if he actually coaches them NOT to ever dunk. Gave a crap answer that it isn't as easy as fans think. Well, it certainly is very easy for opponents to get a lot of them against us. I have seen Cayo do it a few times lately. But overall, it's a mentality that just isn't there, and also believe we don't have coaches that know how to develop big men to play "big" when in the post. If your 6'10" player takes the ball 5-6' from any other forward's post position in the paint and dribble multiple times to even get a shot off, there's something wrong.
it's not a mentality at all. Grant's a heck of a player and very powerful and talented, but he's not an explosive athlete. some guys can just "pop" from a standstill to dunk. others need to bend and bring the ball down to get there. that can take too much time. Grant tries to get it up quickly and get it off the glass. obviously he gets blocked some times.

We have 3 players who can dunk in a college game. Grant, Cayo, and Gustavson. I'm not sure if there is any team outside of the Ivy/Patriot league who have less players on the roster who can dunk. A dunk is a statement basket, it gets the crowd on their feet, teammates pumped, and is one player exerting his will over another player. So, of course
we don't do that in our cerebral Mooney ball approach to the game. We are soft as a pillow in so many aspects of the game.

We sure do get dunked on a lot though.

an parent come up to my teammate after a high school game where he dunked. asked him why he didn't do that more often. joking I assume.

friend got kind of embarrassed. shrugged and said something like "it's not that I don't want to!".

If you go back and watch highlights from the 2011 team you will see lots of explosive plays around and above the rim. Garrett was a true rim protector with the ability to get off the floor quickly. Garrett, Harper, Smith, and Martel routinely threw down dunks in games. This is no knock on our current players but the difference in the roster then and now is staggering. The 2011 team also featured a larger guard in Brothers and youngsters in Lindsay and Williams. Mooney simply hasn't recruited enough high level, athletic players over the last 8 years (And I certainly give him credit for recruiting the 2011 roster). But 8 years is an eternity in modern college athletics and the mojo is gone. The lack of explosiveness is very evident when we match up with a VCU or Dayton. Layups get altered or blocked while dunk attempts energize the crowd or at least draw fouls.

Captain my Captain, you are making good points. I have been saying the same, we have just not recruited a full roster since 2011. I watched Harvard and Brown play the other night. I would say both teams more athleticism than Richmond.

Add Gonzo to that group.

And all of those guys could throw down some nasty dunks too. The difference in recruiting between now and what Mooney was bringing in 9-10 years ago is literally night and day in terms of athleticism.

I was watching the pre-game warm-ups between Randolph Macon and York's D3 NCAA game this past weekend. York's players were between 6'0" and 6'8". EVERY guy on that team dunked during warm-ups. So as a D1 program in a Top 10 conference, we only have THREE GUYS who can dunk in a game? Wow...

I've seen 5'9" and 6' guys dunk among the trees, but does take quickness to beat 'em to the rim. Any 6'10" forward should be able to slam it down at least a couple times a game.

I thought it is illegal to dunk during warm ups and results in a technical foul being assessed before the opening tip!

Khwan Fore could dunk among the trees. Too bad he's not needed on this team and we're better off without him.

0 points and 0-8 his last 3 games. Averaging 3.4 ppg shooting 36%/31%/59% on FGs/3s/FTs.

Kwan has a documented 45.5 vertical which would put him somewhere near the top 10 NBA verticals of all time. Guy is an athletic freak. Yes, we are so much better without him...NOT.

We would probably have been a little better this year with Kwan, still not very good but better. But with the playing time the other players got we hopefully will be substantially better in the future. The season's virtually over and Kwan's career would be over and we'd have fewer freshmen with real game experience.

Khwan left, he’s better off for it and one can (try to) argue we are as well. The back and forth has become a bit tired even though I realize there’s about two people clinging to the one side of this argument.

Perhaps we can just hope he has a nice ncaa experience and some luck finding a pro opportunity after.

Just one person, I think. I will say I have adopted Louisville as my team this year because of Khwan. Unlike some posters, I like to support our players (past and present) and want them all to find success both on and off the court. I'm glad Khwan has found some on court success this year at Louisville and will get a chance to play in the NCAA tournament.

I wish the same could be said about the 12 scholarship players currently wearing UR uniforms. But they will be watching the NCAA tournament on the big screen like the rest of us again this year.

For those who can't get enough of Fore he will be at JPJ Arena on Saturday against the Hoos. Buy a ticket on StubHub and watch him play and maybe just maybe that will meet your need?
