Spring Practice

MO, kj #7 has been with the one's. russ may have packages for him with his run ability and hold up on mancuso #12. it would not surprise me to see "the count" be the starter in 2018, for those who have not seen him yet, he really gives us stability at qb for the future.

Sounds like we may have a good problem on our hands at QB, assuming we can keep all the guys "bought in". Thanks for posting the updates from those that can make practice.

"The Count"?

I love the "Count's" senior video. If he is playing like that now, I hope he gets plenty of time to show his stuff in the spring game. Want to see him in action soon!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend practice on Tuesday but have plans to go today. Let's hope the weather holds off. Graham Latham has been very consistent his entire career and deserves the scholarship. Griffin Trau has earned endless honors and accolades, but it all starts with the snap. I'll be sure to check out the QB's. I think Mancuso is much more comfortable in this offense versus John Garrett's. I am interested to see #4 Jake Clise's progression. By September, we could have +4 QB's who can play in a game. That's a luxury not many FCS schools have.

Agree, but if you have that many scholarship QBs and only 63 total, then some other positions have been sacrificed.

@UR55 Clise caught a rough streak last year having to play W&M with a torn lat. I'm sure he has spent countless mornings with his close friend and mentor Chris "ice&stim" Jones to get that injury up to speed. Regarding Graham Latham, that guy has earned his ears this spring as a top member of the special teams wolf pack no doubt!

Close would start for several CAA teams this fall and Delaware is probably one of them. Unfortunately, he's pretty well buried down the depth chart here.

absolutely right. he may be well served to transfer. shame we can't get draft choices

Update from Practice 3/30/17
  1. The practice schedule and routine is much different than DR's. Music is played throughout, and it's more free flowing. It is controlled chaos rather than DR's methodical agenda.
  2. The number changes and injures made it hard to follow. I didn't recognize many people because they either changed their number or were younger players.
  3. My dark horse on defense is #92 Colby Ritten. He redshirted this past year but showed great potential. I think if he adds weight and size, he will add great depth at the 5 and 3 techs.
  4. My dark horse on offense is #88 Will Geraghty. The kid is massive. He looks bigger than most of the offensive lineman. I think he will be a great end blocker and red zone threat.
  5. The offensive line is a unit to watch. I think a young core can supplement the older guys. #77 Seyoum Settepani and #79 Tazle Sumpter look promising and will only improve.
  6. #24 David Norris had a great practice. We must utilize his versatility. He can cover, and he is physical enough to play in the box.
It was great watching some football and look forward to the spring game.

Very impressive day lined up on the 15th. Unfortunate that it's a holiday weekend so can't be in town but hope there's a good turnout.

The Easter Egg hunt they did there a few years back was terrific. Glad timing worked out to do it again.

Crazy to think it's the last week of Spring Practice. With only 3 practices left (including the game), Coach Huesman and the Coordinators must complete the offensive and defensive installation. It will make the summer that much more productive. Players will have the ability to master the schemes and their position. It will also drastically help the incoming Freshman class. If the Seniors and Team Leaders are able to coach them up before training camp, it will make the Coaches' job easier and increase the productivity and efficiency of practice and camp as a whole. I think the learning curve is higher for the defense than the offense. Our defense in the past has been extremely simple while the offense under John Garrett was incredibly complex with different terminology and verbage. I am not ready to predict the awards given during half time of the Spring Game, but I will be by the end of the week.

Is there going to be any kind of tailgate scene? I'm coming home for Easter this weekend and my dad and I are planning on going to the game.

Russ presser prior to Spring game.Very low key, understated interview.
Stylistically quite different from his predecessor.

Coach was keeping things close to the vest and basically I heard you will see basic
plays but Fall will be wider open on both sides of the ball. I did think Huesman seemed
fatigued proof of some heavy workload.

reading a major applewhite (univ of houston) interview here this morning and he has only 44 players at spring practice due to attrition, transfers, quitters, injuries, he is really hurting. one thing rocco did from the start here, getting the numbers up, extremely important for any program.

I happened to be sitting next to a scout from the Cleveland Browns on a flight from Charlotte to Richmond this past Monday afternoon. He shared that he was looking at 4 players from the Spider squad, including one OT, one DL, one Safety and one WR (with really good hands). We did not discuss names.

The most significant thing he volunteered to me was that he really likes coach Huesman, and thinks he is "a terrific human being and a really good coach." He also respected the work done at Chattanooga. Coach H certainly seems to have a lot of fans, which is a really encouraging sign. I'm planning to be at the game on Saturday and look forward to the reactions, and scouting reports, of others who will be there... I will likely focus on the QBs, and RBs, but will also try to take a look at the bigger picture.

The rosters for the Spring Game have been posted. I like both teams but favor the Blue Squad. Traditionally, the Defense plays better than the Offense in the Spring Game, and the Blue Squad has more projected defensive starters. Spring Games can be tough to follow when the offense plays the defense because of the scoring system. Coach Huesman made the right decision by playing a real game. It will benefit both the fans and players. Can't wait for the game. See y'all on Saturday.

I agree @55. The Blue Team is my pick. I expect Clyde, Waller, and others to play well on defense. Hoping to see a big game from Jake Clise as well. Can't wait for some Spider football on Saturday.

Looking like a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon - hoping that does not keep folks away for the Spring game on Saturday. Looking forward to a great turnout and seeing how things go down with the new offensive and defensive schemes (not sure how much we will actually see). Are you all planning on being there?

Attended the last practice today. I can't predict anything, since the guys didn't have pads on, the team is shorthanded, etc. - but I did notice something that stood out - this offense will be fun, and we have lots of weapons. Still not ruling out playing in Frisco, TX in January...

What a great day today was. I went fishing with my dad and then went to the spring game. Amazing weather and I thought a very solid crowd. Game observations I would say is that the offense looked like it will push the pace all the time and today was just the spring game. Can't wait to see what it looks like in a few more months. I liked the aggressiveness of the defense compared to the one with Rocco and loved how forcing turnovers seemed to still be a huge thing. We have a lot of athleticism and speed at the receiver position but I really hope we didn't just lose Bevels which it appears we did. He will be a huge loss if we did. Loved the running backs and it will be scary with a three headed monster of Thompson/Collins/Goodall. I think we are the deepest I have seen in all my years of watching the Spiders at positions of QB and the other skilled positions.
However I will still point out that it sucked not seeing Rocco and his staff that I loved so much out there on the sideline. Especially at the receivers coach position where Bacote is a HUGE step down from Fontel Mines. I also thought about booing Keith Gill when I saw him, I still can't stand that man and what he did to our program. It's over and done with so I'll just move on. Lastly Mooneys team blew a lead with 2 minutes left! Kind of funny.

Does anybody have any word on Bevels? I hate the thought of losing anyone in the spring game. It didn't even look like there was much contact on Bevels hit at all, he just came down on it wrong.

Rick, heard clemson coach dabo swinney on espn state that most, or at least a lot of, serious injuries take place without contact. think these guys are wound so tight with weights and workouts that little, innocent looking, things, can cause destruction. hope he is OK
